I'm doing FAWM because a bunch of my friends were doing FAWM. All the cool kids, and whatnot. Also, I may be wrong, but it seems like FAWM expects less of a cohesive body of work than RPM, 14.5 songs instead of "an album"...

yeah, i'll definitely link when done.

as a sort of general question for you guys, why do you tend to do FAWM over RPM? i don't know much about FAWM and heard about RPM first, which is the only reason i go that route.
Pretty much the same here. Burr Settles, the guy who started FAWM, actually contacted me back when I was doing Marathon Songs (which was the summer before the first February Album Writing Month) to say that he'd heard about my project, and thought that I might be interested in this site he was launching.

I didn't actually participate in a FAWM for another couple of years, and I didn't win one until last year, but I guess the main reason I do FAWM and not RPM is because I heard of FAWM first.

P.S. I'm currently at 13 out of 15. Huzzah!

This i my fifth FAWM. I should do RPM as I need to work on recording and getting things in a more finished state. But i do FAWM because I always do FAWM. That's where my friends hang out.

so probably a silly question. with FAWM, do you post any sort of evidence that you're done? like do they keep an archive of some sort of completed songs?

Yeah, it should all be on their site during and for a while after February:

http://fawm.org/
http://fawm.org/fawmers/
http://fawm.org/fawmers/zinkline/

Maybe we should all put our FAWM links on a wiki page or something? And those of other fighters involved that we know of who aren't posting here on the boards?

I remember Burr posting on dumbrella about FAWM. Went over there. Eight years on, completed it eight years in a row (though that's neither here nor there, except for people who think the winning line is everything) - I've written more songs for FAWM and 50/90 than I have for SF or anywhere else. More importantly, met a lot more European musicians than I ever done here, and it encouraged me into performing live for the first time in ages, and now I am performing a lot more than I ever did.

I was posting over there about here and descried SF as ying to FAWM yang; both have their advantages and disadvantages but for me at least, they are co-dependant.

So that's a real win for me.

I like that FAWM has a lot of lyricists posting stuff up who are happy for you to put music to their songs. So I can play with their ideas rather than coming up with my own which is something I find fun to do from time to time (hence the occaisional appearence of the Lyricburglar).

I will do a few songs over the month as the mood takes me. I have a few underway, but I won't "win".

Here is my first entry of the year, where I did some music for another FAWMers lyrics

This is my third FAWM, and it's shaping up a lot like my first: pretty damn thin. I started off with a bang, and I have a handful of half songs lying about, but I've fallen victim to a hectic work schedule, prioritizing SpinTunes over FAWM and just a plain lack of super motivation. i finished my fourth song this afternoon, and I think I've decided that I like working everything all the way through (drums, bass, guits, etc.) rather than making a simple demo. It feels more rewarding and more complete that way.

i may do FAWM instead next year. i don't know, i just like having a finished product on march 1. but i could probably use the time spent on writing alone.

FWIW, i'm finalizing lyrics and vocals for my RPM record. even if i don't mix it quite the way i want it, i'm gonna meet the goal. i'm excited, i haven't really done so since 2007.

I posted 20 song demos for FAWM 2012. That's 20 songs in 29 days. The total length of my material is 66 minutes.

Oddly enough, I still like most of my songs, too. It's been a good month. How did everyone else do?

Between the baby and the dodgy computer, I only got 10 songs done this year... but I went in knowing that it was unlikely I'd get to 14.5. I am satisfied. 25 mins of music. I was into short songs this year.

i hit ten songs, seven of which ended up with vocals, for RPM. i posted three in my jukebox:

i very well may do FAWM next year. the idea of being challenged to only write demos may work out better for me...

I managed to do 38 beating my record from last year by 2. it's never my aim, but sometimes the cr*p just pours out of me :) I would have made 40 but my laptop blew up on Tuesday night with two songs trapped on it and not backed up. Yeah, get me, b*tches (or something)

I also did a podcast featuring two SF FAWMers and a bunch who really should come across. (59 minutes)

Niv, can we start SF radio again? I reckon I could do a half an hour podcast once a week/fortnight.

I finished with only 2

http://fawm.org/fawmers/caravanray/

Both collaborations with complete strangers (and I am still waiting for the load female vox to be added to one of them by my co-writer)

But I am very please with both of them, and after all, it is all about quality rather than quantity (hello ladies ;) ).

for any interested parties, the record i made for RPM can be nabbed here: http://files.me.com/psilosybical/b14yu5

i ended up cutting vocals from a few songs at the eleventh hour. not sure if it was the right thing to do or not, but i was so undecided that i'd rather have just put the songs out there as instrumentals.
