jos - no lyrics posted so no comments on them. ok, i take it back, interesting story. the music’s pretty good, but this one gets a vote based on the words which are real easy to understand anyway.
Thanks. Lyrics posted.

Also, I'd like some Jim-just-got-laid-off sympathy votes please.

I've listened several times to this mostly laid back, and pretty strong, fight. Please ask for clarification or further comment if so desired.

Berkeley Social Scene I like this. The choruses are more energetic than the verses and the synthy bridge is nice without getting too retro. The thing that strikes me most is the lagging bass and how it is deliberately late then catches up. I remember trying this on something a hundred years ago and got yelled at for it, but I think it works...somehow.

Chips, Abbott & Ray Serious and almost manic. Good spot for C-Ray, all creepy. The guitars are a little trebley, this would be a good song for a baritone guitar. The synth bridge is perfect and a provides a nice relief from the frenzied guitar attack. Kim Gordon on vocals at times. Nice, eh, Ray? This is a good combo/super group.

Infinity Point Buck The strutting pace and rhythm is nice and I enjoy the near hook of the keys. The vocals are a little hard to hear and could use some variety. Like, I dunno. Maybe doubled or overlapped or something.

c.layne feat. Brad Sucks Big hit of the week. Patient and catchy. This sounds like hip, modern music to me. Unlike my uncool stuck nowhere in time stuff. Great hooks and arrangement, this is hard to resist. Doesn't feel as long as it says it is, most likely due to it's tastiness. It sounds a little canned, though, like it could afford to spend less time on the laptop.

Daddy Bop Swing Set Those drums sound great, and like they took a lot of work to arrange. Real cello, Erin on vocals on top of Glenn's jazzy whiff of progitude guitar schnoodalage works great. Love the Kashmir bridge solo into the Django-fest. This is all over the place without being too gonzo. Very nice.

DJ Ranger Den Almost sounds like an intro to something else, at first. Then it becomes it's own thing, like you dropped in on something that's been going on for a while. I don't mean tediously, but like you caught a peek at something that just went by. I'm confusing myself. A little incomplete ending, but a nice glimpse inside...the thing...going...by.

Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints This is always a good team up. Some of the lyrics feel rushed, but that's not always avoidable during collabos. Great rubbery, loopy synth work and one of the great voices of SF!.

The Economy Biscuits This has a nice sense of urgency, all tough guy. I'm split on my attitude about the iPad thing. I mean, it sounds great, must be super easy (for you) to use, but it almost seems like cheating. Ha! Whatever, this is a nice short bit of semi-angry sounding fun.

Foobar Nice mood and playing, tighter vocals would be very nice, further relaying the serious tone of the song. I like where it all goes, tight except for those vocals. Nice section between the chorus and verse.

Jim of Seattle Nice melody and super arrangement. What a nice video this would make. Scenes of you playing the piano cut with grainy 8mm film and empty tire swing type imagery. Nice story and tastefully done.

LHKM Almost shoe gazey. Pleasant and a little lovey dovey, it strolls along holding your girlfriends hand. You could snip a piece of this off and still have enough left to enjoy. I like the end.

The Lookouts Loose and casual, less backyard party than some of your other tunes. The story is fun and well delivered. Did you play all the parts or is this a collective? Drums are loose but sound good, as does the acoustic. It could all be played a little smoother, but the vibe is right even if this goes maybe a bit too long.

Paco del Stinko This is the first time I've played and recorded drums in over three years, and it shows. My first recording in my new studio.

R. Mosquito Man that guitar is miserable. I like the Burroughs references and the guitar grows on me. Very dark, I can dig that at this length.

Skadaddle Is this related to the Lookouts? There're some similar things going on here. I like the breezey feel, if sloppy. Certainly very passable, though. A tasty and melodic fuzz guitar solo would work. Not all jizzy, but melodic, ya know? This is fun.

sonofsupercar Maybe not the best song this week to others, this is definitely my favorite. Ominous, simple and huge. Not simple like 'duh', but lean. Drums are a little papery sounding but rock. This song is fuckin' heavy and the nuts. This feels like it ends too soon.

TRJones Pretty good melody going there. I wait for a full band to come in and that would certainly work with this tune. It stands as it is, but is open to interpretation. Good vocal delivery.

Tyler Zahnke Yeah, this tune is...I dunno. Something keeps me held to it, but what is with the hand held recorder and cheesy gun shots, and that sometimes sloppy Phantom of the Opera music? I like it, kinda, but feel as though I shouldn't.

Really meant to write a full set of reviews this week, not having a song in this fight... but mixing the next one coupled with daylight savings time kicking me in the nards has gotten in the way.

So in short this fight pleased me very much... great work by all, and sensing improvement week to week from some. Lookouts, Daddy Bop, Skadaddle (desperately want to hear more from you guys too), and Jim kicked ass in a particularly notable way. Jim, those lyrics... on that basis alone you've earned top-spot from me two weeks in a row - magnificent and moving.

HeuristicsInc wrote:djrd - really like your vocal, good vibrato (?). and that little bit of delay is a nice touch. interesting lyrics. i would like it to be longer. this song would be good with an electronic lengthening/remix... i’m offering, if you’re interested.
what happened was that the song kind of went, "unnnh. nope. you're done. no more. stop it. nyah!" so I just stopped and that was all. So if you'd like to have a go at it, be my guest! Let me know what you need then.

Thank you for all the reviews and I am sorry I haven't been around much lately for the typing here. I had to go out of town and am behind on lots of stuff including things I'd like to get done around here. Almost done though, hopesfully! Back to it for me.

Thanks Lunkhead, CordSmith, JoS, Economy Biscuits, HeuristicsInc, and Paco del Stinko for your kind words and reviews so far!

Berkeley Social Scene - As far as the mix goes, everything seems a little dry, and the guitar tone could stand to sparkle a little more. I really like the synthy bridge.

Chips, Abbott, and Ray - The vox are a bit high in the mix and are EQd too mid-heavy. The mid-song freakout is pretty great, and the breakdown following is a good change of pace. The mix of everything at the end of the song sounds much better than the beginning.

Infinity Point Buck - Even shitty mics can be EQ'd to sound halfway decent, so I would suggest doing some research on how people EQ vox in hip-hop. I like the occasional dissonance in the backing track.

Daddy Bop Swing Set - Good mix! Great performances all around. I like the percussive element to, what sounds to me, like nylon strings.

DJ Ranger Den - A nice segue piece. I like how the chord progression resolves in the end.

Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints - Not really sure what to think of this, Johnny. I like the bassline!

The Economy Biscuits - I like the driving energy and the brevity of this track.

Foobar - Turn those vocals down! The piano is really nice, and it is completely lost under the vocals. The songwriting is really solid, but the production on this almost kills it. Put a bit of reverb on the vox, bury them a bit, and practice the performance a bit more so the harmonies match, and I think this would be a great song.

Jim of Seattle - This sounds nice, and your compositions are always great. I'm sure the lyrics are good too, but that is rarely what I focus on in music. I'm sure you can tell that from my songs, too.

LKHM - I always enjoy a good melancholy waltz. Some of the sounds are a little cheesy, but I don't care because the overall feeling of this song is really enjoyable. One of my favorites in this fight.

The Lookouts - A nice dusty, ramshackle jam. Good vocal performance. That chorus hook is great.

Paco del Stinko - A good follow-up to The Lookouts. Fun energy and a dirty but not overbearing guitar tone.

R. Mosquito - A bit too amorphous for me, but I really like the dissonance and tone of this.

Skadaddle - Ska is one of my least favorite genres, but I'll try to ignore that for the moment. At least there aren't any fucking trumpets in this. The mix feels a little compact, like maybe the high end got EQd out. I actually do really enjoy the chorus, and the picked guitar helps add a little variety to the rhythm of the lead guitar.

sonofsupercar - This is a solid rock jam, though I do with the main guitar were more up front in the mix to give the whole thing a bit more balls.

TRJones - This isn't really my thing.

Tyler Zahnke - Are you miking the keyboard speaker? I'm guessing those clicks are your fingers on the keys. It's a little distracting. This composition is pretty nutty. I'd like to hear it recorded in a different fashion, I think. I feel like I'm in a Final Fantasy battle or something.

Thanks! Good ear! Yep, both the rhythm little Spanish guitar and the Guitelele solo are nylon strings.

Normally I hold my tongue if I don't have a song in the fight, but I have to give some props to JoS for writing a thoughtful, touching song. You got me all teared up at work, you glorious sentimental bastard. :D

Other notables were C.Layne, SonofSuperCar, Daddy Bop, and Paco.

Heh! You picked it - that is certainly what I had in mind. I just need to practise a bit more with mixing vocals into guitar noise. It is something I always have problems with.
