Just some general comments upon first listen of the tunes. Congratulations to all that got this in on time. I have learned a lesson and will be on my toes from now on. I never thought I would see the day when the hour stated next to the deadline day would come into play. Lesson learned. If I'm thinking Zig I should be prepared to zag. Wig, wag etc.
Let the Carnage begin. Last three standing at the end get my vote.
Brad Plaid Band Entering the ring first we have The Brad Plaid Band. Starting off with some pep. Like your kick sound, but could use some reverb on the drums. I like your vocal delivery. Its sort of the delivery I was hoping for, but my aggressive vocals just dont sound legit so I scratched them. You do a much better job. Nice drum break at 1:04. This is short and sweet, just the way these heavier tunes should be. No time to get bored. A nice sounding submission.
Caravan RayA big Fan of Caravan Ray, you never know what style he`s gonna lay on ya from week to week. LOve the layered vocals, everything sounds so pristine. A headphone masterpiece. A really nice mix. Wow, nothing bad to say about this one except its to short. Think I may have another listen and pay some close attention to the vocals and mix. Great job CR.
FitzroyOh real drums!!! That should be a vote automatically. Its got my head bopping, and your voice is quite suited to this style. I smell essence of The Dead Milkmen. Another real short tune, but again, short is the way to go on the faster/punkier style of tune. Not a bad submission. Hats off for recording off the floor. Real drums are soon to be on my horizon.
The Ghost WithinAggressive is the word of the day it seems. Real nice balance in this. Your drums sound good. Just intricate enough without over powering. Guitars sound superb. Your main vocals dont sit well in the mix for me, but your chorus sounds awesome. Creepy yet rocking. Coming back to the normal voice makes it sound evn weaker when sitting next that great chorus vocal sound. Just a little bit more depth sonically. The chorus really keeps the song pumping.
4 have entered, 3 shall move on. Caravan Ray lay's back as the three more aggressive tunes battle it out. top three moving on to face Grill SHots will be Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Brad Plaid.
Grill ShotsGrill SHot comes in with a smidge of funk and extra dose of Hip Hop. Vocals sound really nice in this. Everything does for the most part, although the scratching is a bit much on a few parts. A real tight production all aropund, and good enough to send Brad Plaid Band home. Beasties lawyers are coming after ya though.
Havarti on Rye6 minutes eh? Well here goes nothing. Robot dog? nice. I'm waiting for a "Mars.Needs. Women", or a "put the needle on the record when the drumbeat goes like this". Track sounds great. Lots going on but not necesaarily distracting. Now I am having flashbacks of playing with the propellerhead demo way back in the day. Okay half way through this. This is where my personal taste comes into play. I find things are getting repetetive. I am trying to focus on the subtleties, but its to much. Over all this track sounds great, but does not keep my interest. QUality submission though.
hillbillyLets see if Hillbilly can make a dent in our top three. A "real" recording, always a breath of fresh air. Just sitting and listening, thats a good thing. Well although its a bit lo-fi, this song is nicley done. A bit to abrupt on the ending, but this production was very enjoyable. Here's to the Hillbilly!
Hip Hop AnonymousWell, I threw these guys a vote last time. Really liked their production last time. This time is the same. Track sounds great, not big on the flow of this one. Look forward to your next submission, but this one wont be able to surpass the Grill SHots track IMO.
Jeebas JonesA long time friend and collaborator, this in IMO is one of his strongest efforts to date. The production on this compared to your past efforts (not including Scientific 7, and Fill in the Blank) has taken a big leap forward. ALways good to get other people involved to, and the addition of the female voice is cool. Your lead electric needs to be tightened up in parts. its all over the place , especially on your extended break. This gives me a Steve Miller - Dance Dance Dance vibe. A great submission but not enough for my vote this week. Thanks for your solo on my late submission this week.
Jon EricAaaaah gin, my favorite. A beautiful piano sound and performance, well thought out lyrics. Been awhile since I heard a gin soaked, heartbreaking ballad. Maybe some more strings or some sort of pad to fill up the background a bit. Something seems a bit thin, although as the song progresses it gets fuller as it ramps up. A great submission!
King ArthurUp next we have King Arthur. Guitars sound really nice in this mix. Not really kean on the vocal placement and melody on this one. Sort of dulls it up a bit. Theres no real hook that keeps me invested in the tune. The sound of the mix is well balanced and nothing is competeing for space. Hope to hear some more from ya next fight though.
Mr. Nakazawa's Book of Surprises Right away I cant get into this. A smidge sour on my ears. Lyrics are good, but not enough time went into performance and production. Just to loose all around.
My Social UniformAlright, looking forward to this one. Dug your submission last week. This is another good one, although I dont find your vox sit quite as nice as last time. Your dub step break is cool, although it does not sit nice in the mix, at least to my ears. WOuld like to hear the individual elements of that break a little clearer amongst each other. Looking forward to your next one.
Paco del StinkoLike it right away, got that twanged out reverb guitar in the bg, accompanied by some noce full distortion. Not to mention a quality vocal delivery channeling your inner Danzig. This track sounds awesome. Great energy, great structure. Nice little bridge in the middle. This is going in my permanent songfight folder. Nice sound on the solo. This is good enough to decapitate the Brad Plaid band
So we have a new top 3......Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Paco del Stinko
R. Mosquito Last but not least we have R.Mosquito with another heavier track, that so far sounds wicked. Love that guitar sound!!Bass punctuates nicely. I would like to hear the drum (kick specifically) a bit more in the mix, but really this is quality. Great vocal delivery and performance. Its a tight one, but not sure if I can chuck a vote your way this week, but it was good tune.
So, votes this week go to Caravan Ray, The Ghost Within, and Paco del Stinko.
Great fight gang, hopefully next time I will be a bit more aware of looming deadlines and be able to throw my hat in the ring properly.
PS. Just read Caravans post. One mans shite is another mans.....well maybe that doesnt work. There were to many good things about that song to call it shite. Thanks for the drunkin kind words caravan. Ialso though my song was shite. There were some good qualities about it, but I was not happy with my lyrics, vox performance, and vocal mix. They were all rushed and not very well thought out.
