What about trash talking, would that qualify as meeting the challenge?

I haven't consulted with the other judges about this interpretation, but I'm gonna go ahead and say I would be pretty unimpressed if someone tried that.

Also, are the lid and foot pedal of my trash can OK as "something from [my] garbage bin"? Or does it have to be from INSIDE my garbage bin? In that case, does the internal hinge count? Or the separate bucket that's inside the main bin...?

Again, I haven't consulted with the other judges on this one (yet)...
I'll check with them.
(EDIT: I had an answer here, but I've removed it pending input from the other judges.)

Can I put a microphone inside the trash can and then hit the outside of the trash can? The sound is then taken from the inside of the trash can.

Can I mark down people who want us to be their mommies and not judges?

The challenge is what it is - take a chance, see if it works out for you ... or put it another way - exactly what percentage of competitors over 10 Nur Eins have been disqualified for not meeting a challenge?
[BTW This is not a view approved by a quorate of judges using an appropriate democratic process ;p]

"Sampling Shirley Manson's band Garbage. Using files from your computer's "Trash" folder."
I would have found both of these entirely acceptable. Assuming somebody just sprang them on us. But now you have flagged their possible use - they would be unacceptable.
Bottom line - lateral usage can be good. Maybe.

I didn't get disqualified for using samples of chimpanzee and orang-utan noises as the answer to the challenge - "Guest family member"

Well, I think that's because anyone who's heard your songs would have assumed that family connection long before the round in question, CR ...

To be honest, I would have laughed pretty hard if someone used them. But it's also low hanging fruit. There are others that fit the technical part of the challenge as well as use creative liberties with the wording of it.
As long as I bang on something that fits in a trashcan, it fulfills the challenge. Trying to add rules to it beyond what is posted is just making things less fun. You get it, you do it. Stop yer whinin' and make a freakin' song already!

I think the judges' consensus is that the use of the trash can itself is fine. Go for it, guys.

But only if you call it a garbage bin (or dust bin) - and not a "trash can".

I presume atomic dustbins are okay, even if they belong to Ned.

So... dumpster-diving is the wrong tack, then. Good, the waste from the Vietnamese restaurant was pretty foul.

Done! Feeling good about this one. Only I hope the random number generator isn't a Ben E King fan.

that's next level Carlo! sweet.
I don't think I'm handy enough to make a stringed instrument out of my garbage.

Carlos - you better not be trying to steal my vibe! Impressive effort though.
This was my set up. The grey bag had some loose change in it and you can't see the torn bank statement which I used as a bass drum.

Normally I'm not a big fan of competitors explaining their methods before the deadline (I think the finished song should stand on its own merits), but I'm really enjoying these photos of your makeshift instruments and recording setups! Keep it up, guys!

Just sent mine in. Perhaps subconciously inspired by Mr. Meow's grandiose round zero entry, the chorus of my song consists entirely of the word "Meh".
The circus described in my song is actually less than average. Hope you won't mind that.
