mkilly wrote:Have I mentioned this? I Just Don't Get the hype around They Might Be Giants. Now I went and saw them in 2002, I think it must've been, and they put on a rockin' live show. I really liked the show. But I am not impressed by their music.. I mean so much of it is just novelty, and I just can't get past that. I guess that sincere can be bad, too, or worse--They Might Be Giants is fun to listen to, but I'm not so hip on, say, Matchbox Twenty, to not even evoke so many cookiecutter emo bands or, worse, Papa Roach and whatever. But TMBG has so many albums, and I don't know why people (nerds especially) love them so much. JB once said, and I'm inclined to agree, that they're for folks that are too cool for Weird Al but not cool enough for Ween. Basically.

edit: Lemme point out that I don't understand adulation about TMBG. It's notable (cf. other adulations about things that I don't find adulationworthy) because they have a big ol' fanbase, and their music is largely (invariably?) novelty or not far from. Even Tori Amos fans I can understand, though I'm not personally huge on her, but TMBG? Beck's lyrics don't make any sense but I declare them better than TMBG's, pound for pound.
I don't understand why TMBG is being so easily lumped into the novelty category.

Same with: Tiny Tim, Tom Lehrer, the Bonzo Dog Band, the Singing Dogs.

The only similarity between Ween, TMBG, and Weird Al is that they include humor in their music.

I have to admit that the last three TMBG albums are kind of unlistenable, but their first two and Apollo 18 are pretty genius. Same with Linnell's State Songs.

A dude makes an album that's songs about states and you ask what's novelty about them?

Okay...

The right to bear arms should only apply to bears.

Um, what's not to get about horses? Four legs, run fast, flowing manes. Or do you mean some people's obsession with them?

Nah, I just hate horses. And people's obsession with them. By the time I got done reading pages and pages of posts, I had it in my head that this was about things I don't like that a majority of other people do. And I don't like horses. Not one bit.

Yeah. That and reality TV, which mostly seems to be a showcase of the worst of human behavior.

Cool. I met a guy with a phobia of horses once. Turned out he was afraid they were gonna keel over and crush him. And he introduced me to his mate who had a phobia of balloons. At that point I decided they were winding me up :)

She's pretty (imo) and there was a sex tape and she has a sometimes-amusing TV show. the amount of discussion she brings is decreasing with time. I don't really find anything to just not get about her, but I just don't get why some shit (Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes, Howard Dean's scream, that Crazy Frog shit, etc.) elicits so much talk and speculation and whatever else. I guess it's just market forces at work, where tabloids keep printing Brad/Angelina and Tom/Katie and Ben/Jen G. or Ben/Jen L. stories until they don't make any money anymore, but... well, jesus, I can't believe that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes elicited SO MUCH DISCUSSION when me personally, and nobody I know, care about their relationship any further than, say, a blurb every so often in Entertainment Weekly.

Amen on the horses. I hate the bastards.

3 times in my life I have been coaxed into climbing onto the back of one of the vicious beasts - and 3 times they have tried to kill me.

The last time I was pig-rooted (heh, gotta love that expression though!) and knocked unconcious momentarily.

Hate horses.

Paul's Boutique should be filed under Dust Brothers, Beastie Boys.

So I'll hit you with a copy of Hello Nasty instead.

I don' t get fiddy cent. The birthday song was ok, but 5 top 40 singles at once?* C'mon. I rember when I could listen to hip hop, I guess you reach a certain age and that part of you brain shuts off.

*Not that I pay attention to the top 40, I don't get that either.

I won't have a bad word said about Our Nicole, thank you very much. She's everything a proper girlie should be.

Especially since she dumped that short-arsed, scientological nutbag.
