houu...
Incidentally, I was both shocked, moved and interested in this week's art. I mean, the title choices were interesting enough. It was an intriguing theme for SF to take up. In the following week, although I had already picked up a bit about Darfur, I managed to learn a good bit more by taking some time with the issues. Furthermore, even though I expected the cover art to be a little on the edge, it really scandalized me, in a good way. I saw janjaweed first and didn't really think it made sense, but once I saw it was a complete series, everything came together. I think this does a good job with context and I like what it does. It objectified, it horrified, it made me feel dirty.
Additionally, Sudan has shocked me in a lot of ways in my short life. (the rest of this post is sort of random thoughts about what one learning experience I had, and it really belongs in the politics thread...oops) I've stood face to face with a slave. A real slave. This man, just a little older than me, his tall, thin frame a result of years of physical abuse and demanding labor, spoke in nearly fluent English about the atrocities he faced within my lifetime that the government in Sudan denies! He spoke about discovering his brother, who he thought dead, was a member of a militant group in the Sudan and refused to come to the states to join a peaceful effort to resolving the conflict with International efforts. He even mentioned the absurd lack of respect one Miss Britney Spears (or at least her agent) showed in response to a personal letter he wrote after seeing the I'm a Slave 4 U music video or however they decided to spell that song title. This ramble is just to say, man... some crazy things go on in this world. I guess if I was really awesome, I'd do something.

Well i'm still gonna pretend that dildos symbolize jerk-off sort of men that follow inane archaic policies of rape. They shoot for the Janjaweed (a policy of rape, I have now learned) and they are not real men.Morbid Morgan wrote:The idea that the penis is a toy, a weapon etc. The original intent was to have the penis warp into a automatic weapon...I think it's a G3 that they are using primarily...but the dildos alone looked better...so there you have it...no real message behind the fake penis and the real vagina. Happy accident.Lunkhead wrote:Anyway, I do have one question for you, Morbid Morgan. Why use a real vagina but fake penises? I'm very curious about that choice.
That's the beauty of the art, it can be interpreted however ya want...ah, freedom...

i'm pretty sure that quite a few people agreed that the por cover was spot-on but the jjw cover was a stretch. it looked more like the artist was trying to stick to a theme than to invent an applicable cover.jb wrote: There's no discussion of whether or not the penis/vagina target pictures adequately convey the gravity or nuances of the issue.
i guess after the dong=weapon explanation it makes sense, but i think the janjaweed are larger than their penises in terms of the What The Fuck Is Wrong With Africa? question.
i guess anyone who hasn't should read The Zanzibar Chest and see Hotel Rwanda.

I've been trying to stay out of this hornets nest, and hopefully still will, but here's a few thoughts I've come up with while reading this provocative thread.
1) The cover art didn't offend me personally, nor did it's relevance grab me until reading this thread. I wish Morgan would have morphed that dildo into a weapon, I really think that would have helped convey the intended message a little better for JJW. Perhaps another one of the talented artists in this community could give that a try or provide links to art that they feel would have been more appropriate of effective. The use of the vagina on POR was striking, and whether or not you liked it or not, it definitely grabbed everyone's attention. The cover for WIIFM might have been more effective if it had included a donkey, with the two animals fighting over the gas mask. In the background men on horseback with rifles raised in the air. To me this image would have conveyed the general overall ineffectiveness of congress, with both sides fighting to protect themselves while ignoring the issues just off in the distance.
2) Sadly, I was in the dark on this issue until now as well. Fortunately, someone has flipped on the light switch and I'm going to do the very least little thing I can do, write my Conressmen and Senators. I would urge everyone here to do the same, including our neighbors to the North, South, across the pond and where ever. Please don't be silent on this issue, let them know how it makes you feel.
3) The SFW / NSFW issue is kind of odd for me. Where I work, we have an is it Work Related or Non-Work Related policy. We're told to feel free to use the Internet if it has a justifiable business purpose. To date, I have yet to justify Songfight as business related. And since the guys in my IT department are comparable to gas station owners when it comes to price gouging, I can't afford to pay them to cover my tracks anymore. Regardless of title content, I think it's pretty clear to everyone reading this thread now that there's always the possibility that some of the artwork could be considered sensitive. And as previoulsy stated, the best policy for viewing it may be to error on the safe side. There's no chance I would suggest to admin on how best to run this site. It's theirs to do so how they see fit and I think they do an awesome job as is. Their policy of "If you have a better way, go start your own site" has been well conveyed since I've been coming here. That doesn't mean that all suggestions they have been given have been bad or wrong, or even ignored for that matter. It just means that if they happen to disagree with your suggestion, you're always free to come up with a better way all on your own.

I'm sorry for my covers lateness this week. My life has slowly been falling a part since last weekend. If anyone can please help me out and put together a cover for Jalopy that would be a great help to me right now.
Thanks,

For "Chance," I considered taking the pornographic interpretation, but I figured it might've been too explicit for the fms' tastes. (Chance is a notable gay porn star, jicydk, who starred in "An American in Prague.")Dan-O from Five-O wrote:3) The SFW / NSFW issue is kind of odd for me. I feel that Morbid Morgan's awesome art was... subtly explicit. You have to look at it for a few seconds before possibly being offended. And that gives most people at work a second or two to shut the window or scroll down.
