This year's Songfight Live was amazing. I enjoyed it even more than Austin, actually. A good part of this might be because of Team Seahorse.

Yay! Twas indeed a most excellent SF! Live. Many thanks to Jack, Ken, Blue, and Spud for making the event possible, and to Glenn for stepping in on bass for the Tiny Robots and KNI sets and our fight song. It was great to see people again and meet a bunch more SF! folks, especially Jack, who I'd not met even though he's only 1.5hrs away, and Glenn, who I've spoken to on the phone and received the gift of many hours of Sifl & Olly from, and Moboid/Heather, who I'd heard so much about from Future Boy in Boston last year. Team Seahorse (plus honorary members) will hold a special place in my heart, of course. I would also like to thank all the fighters who came to our rented beach house for the after party on Saturday, for being awesome guests. Lastly, a big thanks to Spud and JB for running the joint and making this community possible.

Anyway, back to the real world.

(Maybe we should start doing this twice a year?)

i just got a phone call from Linda, the owner of Cayuga Vault, and she just wanted to thank me and Songfight! for having such an awesome show at their venue. She said that both she and Pete (the sound guy and co-owner) thought it was an incredibly well planned and supported event, and she was blown away by the amount of support that songfighters gave each other. In fact, she's interested in booking a future show with Ken Flagg, and possibly other individual songfighters in the future, and asked if we might promote such a show on the website. I told her that at this point cayuga Vault has definitely achieved "friend of songfight" status.

So Ken Flagg, PM me. Linda wants to book you for your own future show.

Songfight! Live 2006 Highlights and Lowlifes

An index of memorable people, moments, and... stuff from SFL: High & Dry. Items are presented in no particular order.

Item 1: Apparently, every third exit/entrance ramp on the northbound 1 freeway is closed.
Item 2: King Arthur's first song was the perfect show opener, presenting the show as a radio program to the Santa Cruz audience.
Item 3: "Your shitty song made me barf, Loggins."
Item 4: Spud + Kompressor cover = Awesome.
Item 5: Caravan Ray! Oi! Oi! Oi! Caravan Ray! Oi! Oi! Oi! Caravan Ray! Oi! Oi! Oi!
Item 6: Who the hell knew Marcus Kellis could rip it up like that?! One of my favorite sets.
Item 7: Ken makes kickass eggs. Erin makes kickass potatoes. Together, they are the wonder twins of complete breakfasts.
Item 8: Sweet cookies, Heidi took some amazing pictures!
Item 9: Stueym learned a valuable lesson in clock management, but I really can't imagine his set without his perfectly Scottish ramblings. Truly entertaining.
Item 10: Fluffy learned that the rock trumps stomach problems.
Item 11: JB's "What We Need More Of Is Science" may be the hardest song ever to follow... especially when Jeff Fal uses it to start a dance party. It makes me happy to see JB happy, and this weekend, he seemed very happy.
Item 12: The Clan Blue is awesome... even if the eldest two kids think chocolate chip waffles are gross. You guys should all come play in LA so we can hang out more.
Item 13: Team Seahorse 4 Life!
Item 14: Bjam said her last song was a pathetic attempt at being sexy, but sweet Christmas was it awesome. One of the night's highlights.
Item 15: Likewise, Dre's final song, Three Day Waiting Period, wins the diamond in the rough award for the weekend. It was almost Dylanesque in its beautiful simplicity. Another one of my favorite song of the weekend.
Item 16: Someone needs to give Ken Flagg a captain's hat, cause his sound is so smooooooooooooth.
Item 17: The Saturn Cafe has kickass milkshakes. Also, sandwiches made with fakin bacon.
Item 18: Apparently, it is biocosmic energy that makes the Mystery Spot so mysterious. Either that, or a UFO crashed there millions of years ago. Or there's some gas there. Or there is a geomagnetic anomaly present. Whatever the cause, it is definitely, definitely, definitely not an optical illusion (according to our tour guide). I bought a t-shirt.
Item 19: Glenn and Rachael are infexious in the most positive of ways. I'm so glad I finally got to hang out with you guys!
Item 20: Jack is one of the nicest and most thoughtful people I have met in a long time. He is such a tremendous asset to the Songfight community... on top of which Brody kicks total ass. Thank you so much for all of your hard work in putting this together!!!
Item 21: Jeff Fal has got some sweet neck tats.

They are so inconsistent. Our tour guide left the possibility open that it was an optical illusion. (Which it is. I noticed a hell of a lot of subtle things they did to make up not seem like up, like none of the surfaces were vertical, including the fence posts and trees.)

The only thing I didn't specifically have an immediate explanation for was why the pendulum seemed to take more force going in one direction than the other, but I never tried to push it either. It was probably just a perceptual thing due to the way you had to stand on the (very much NOT flat) floor.

It was fun but not worth the one-hour wait.

Just in case anybody but me & my mom was concerned.... KA has arrived home safely in AZ as of 1 pm Monday. I'll start working on editing and uploading pictures from the show... I think I got pictures of every set and every livefight group except when I was on stage, plus a bunch of individual pictures at Jack's.

I think only admins can create a new "category" in the songfight.net gallery, but if somebody will set up a SFL 2006 main category, I'm pretty sure I can post photos there - otherwise, they'll be on my webshots site and I'll post the address of that.

spud and ken, i really could not have pulled this together without your excellent behind-the-scenes planning and direction, not to mention you are 2 of the nicest guys in the world and easiest to work with.

blue and sam, same as above.....thanks for bringing and shlepping so much gear, doing the stage setups and breakdowns, and generally being on top of any stage issues both nights. you guys are giants among men, in addition to bringing the rock.

the 4 of you guys are slicker than a NASCAR pit crew.....

Not happy...

I just wrote about a paragraph of thoughts PER BAND for night one, and it didn't go through. I had saved some of it in notepad, so at least it wasn't a total loss.

Very lame. I will get to the rest of it later, when I am home. Here's all I've got for now:

In order of stage appearance:

King Arthur's One Stand Knights - WTF was a fantastic way to kick off the show. I think that live drums made me enjoy your live material better than your studio recordings. I didn't talk with you much, but you seem like a decent guy. It was nice to meet you.

Tex Beaumont and the Dirty Hearts - "Pictures of Natalie Portman" is ridiculously catchy. You rock pretty freaking hard for an engineer. I got along with you better than I thought I might. I am glad that the trip was worth it, and I hope to hear audio from your special upcoming live gig. Also: CARAVAN RAY! OI! OI! OI!, CARAVAN RAY! OI! OI! OI!

stueym - 15 minutes was not nearly enough. In more ways than one, of course. Your introductions might be a little long at times, but you had everyone thoroughly entertained with what you were saying. At least a couple of us just felt bad because we feared that you would only get one song in! I don't mention this in a bad way, for what it's worth. It was quite charming. The fact that you chose to cover one of my songs in that 15 minutes was very touching. I enjoyed sharing a stage with you, and I thank you for the transposed chord chart.

The BeWells - I am ridiculously behind the times in my songfight listening. You've been in 13 fights? That's proof of just how far behind I am, really. I hadn't really checked into your stuff before this live event, but I'm listening to your stuff right now. I like it. I hope that you will attend future songfight live events, because I will look forward to your set each time you do. From the limited time I spent talking to y'all, I would have to say that both Andy and Lindsay are cool in my book. I mention your names because I actually remember them, and I am not good with names.

Bjam - It was a sincere pleasure to finally meet you. Your live "One Less" lived up to my expectations and then some. You've already heard me say that you're going to be a force to be reckoned with as time goes on... in fact, I think you're already well on your way to making that a true statement. "Dad, what are you doing?!" is still one of my favorite stage moments of this whole event.

Glenn Case and Rachael Layne - That's us. We had a lot of fun and formed new friendships as a result of being there.

Charcoal - "C" is for Cholesterol, that's good enough for me. Yeah... it's a line that sticks with you. For better or worse, perhaps. I admit to enjoying your funny material a little more than the serious stuff. Your "Please the Pig" was a highlight in Austin, and "Goodbye Monster" seemed to be your set's strongest point this year.

Marcus Kellis and the Legitimate Businessmen - Well, you're certainly not the best singer ever, but you continue to take people by surprise by how good of a frontman you are. You are a born entertainer when you hit that stage. "Is it Cold?" is one of my favorite Octothorpe songs, and the contrast between both versions of the song worked really well.
