i hadn't noticed that, but i liked that song more than i expected to. i mean maybe my expectations were low -- i am obviously not expecting another blue album or anything -- but it sounds pretty decent, albeit middle-of-the-road.
(much better than that new piece of crap (i forget the name of the song) nine inch nails has come out with. i was really looking forward to this album too...)

I like "Selfless" but my favorite Godflesh is "Pure." Now I want to go listen to one of those albums. Where are they?

The Scissor Sisters...
It's either just crap, or utter crap. I'm still undecided.

Inserted thoughts
OK, I'll admit the above just might be twaddle. Though I'm still genuinely undecided some of the damn tracks are starting to inveigle their way into my small grey lump.

Next you'll be telling us you don't like the new Doctor Who. BTW, how come we don't have a TV thread about that? Are we waiting for the American showing?
Oh yes. What am I listening to? At this moment, through no fault of my own, I can hear...
Bros playing. What were you saying about utter crap?

The Killers - Hot Fuss
This band has some great freaking songs.
And some really shit songs. There are some moments that suck so bad, I almost had to skip through them. {shudders} But the good tracks are awesome. Based on that, the next album will either be superawesome, or suck itself right into the bargain bin.

it's not that bad but it seems to be more of the same and lacks that dynamic heart he is known to put into his music.
Meanwhile..david bowie
I've been listening to my new Cake CD over and over.

I agree. I was extremely disappointed.

Guero is particularly fun, though I find it curious that of the three "hidden" bonus tracks, two of them are album highlights. A-.
I also bought Moby's new album, Hotel. He finally got the right idea and put all the actual songs on one disc (his little technowanks are collected on a bonus "Ambient" disc). They're not all great, but I've always thought that he had some talent, regardless of whether he's been letting it stagnate. There seems to be a lot of genuine effort put in here. Which is good, because 18 just plain sucked. B/B-.
Oh, and hey, Mars Volta. I get it, you're smarter than me. Can someone explain to me why they chose to write so much of the album in Latin? And sometimes Spanish? I've been digesting this for a few weeks, but it just won't go down properly.

dear, generic
because we like to alienate our potential fans who don't know spanish and latin, and because kids think it's cool when things are in foreign languages. it somehow makes them smarter for listening to us.
sincerely,

Because the Mars Volta are fucking retarded. And just because they mash all their big words together doesn't make them smarter, let's not sell ourselves short. Matter of fact, here's a new Mars Volta song that I just wrote, "The leperosy doctrine felt an agnostic font affronting to its democratic fever dreams while lawnmower traces were left in favela fever nightmares." I know it's not long, but I figure 5 hours of noodling can pad out the rest of it.

That was actually more of a fan question.... seeing as the non-fan answer is pretty obvious.
Does anyone here actually like or appreciate The Mars Volta, and if so, could you maybe take a stab at explaining the artistic motive behind the trilinguistics?

Weasel-don't sugarcoat it dood...just say what you feel.
It's a tough listen, but the musicianship, while wanky, is pretty stunning. I like how people assume that because they use big words and different languages, they think tMV think they are smarter than everyone else... I don't think so.
Do books with no pictures bother you guys too?

Yeah, I could only read the abridged version of Moby Dick. The pictures were sooooo sweet ass.

I don't speak Latin. I wouldn't begin to know how to tackle a song in three languages. Clearly, tMV are smarter than me. That's not an accusation against them - I love smart music - but someone throw me a bone here. It's impossible to explicacte lyrics if you can't understand them.

Sure, but do you need to? Maybe I should be ignored because I'm the resident j-rock freak, but I listen to so much music whose lyrical content I don't even begin to understand, and it's still enjoyable.
Incidentally, when you listen to it to the point of being able to sing along without having the slightest idea what is coming out of your mouth, you should probably find a hobby. Just some experienced advice.

I'm sure this won't win me any points around here... but ATDI's English lyrics didn't make sense to me often either... but I listen to their Relationship of Command album frequently.
I listen to a lot of Project 86 and Pigeon John, as well as a little bit of Blindside, and a local Hip Hop group called Lightheaded.

Currently hittin' up
Ween - The Mollusk.
I know they're dumb, but they're so good at it. The live DVD of the Chicago gigs on the most recent tour rocks! A real live theramin moment is featured. Any band that uses a theramin scores points with me.
