If we're counting that album then I call dibs on "Willie the Pimp". Oh wait, he said no beefheart, aw,

Wondering if any Talking Heads would count since I'm on a big TH kick, maybe Remain in Light, Fear of Music, or Speaking in Tongues?

Or how about Queen? or Queens of the Stone Age?

Oh who am I kidding, I'm just going to do "roll the bones" anyway. Or "leave it"

Regardless, we're in.

I'm short on time these days but I'd consider trying to get in on this.

Sounds cool.

I don't guess Pink Floyd would count... I'd have to figure something out.

This sounds like a lot of fun however it turns out. LEAF, I know you play guitar and all but can I like glob on and offer a collaboration hand? I'm a Rush fan from way back and I think I could really do it justice. I'm no Alex Lifeson by any stretch but I think I could pull it off if you're interested.

Heads not, but I'd love to hear you cover them in any case.
Queen, certainly.

QoTSA - don't really think of them as prog, do you? That said, I guess the last album was kind of concept-esque. None of the tracks struck me as particularly progressive though. Hmmm....

Wrechdom, I love the Heads too. Remain in Light has remained in my head since the first time I heard it. It may come close because of Eno's producership, but they're pretty firmly rooted in New Wave.

Maybe another fight...

That said, if you do 'Roll the Bones' I'll have a seizure. Ha!

Early Genesis would be awesome to cover. The drumming kicks some serious ass. Any of the early stuff with Gabriel on vocals and Phil on drums.

Rush would be great to cover, but my interest in covering them would be only stuff off Moving Pictures. Maybe I can convince Leaf and THC to do YYZ and make it a true Canadian contingent. (no offense Des or Puce :) )

Yes would be great to cover, but my favourites would pretty much be anything off Fragile.

Anything by Zappa would kick.

King Crimson would perhaps be the one group I would most like to cover. Anything off Discipline, if that counts since it's 81. Bill Bruford rules!!!!!!

Basically this cover concept kicks.

I just realized last night (with an idea for a prog rock song in my head) that if I were to enter this sidefight, I'd have to be able to write my own prog rock song for the entry. Not sure if this is just a coverfight, or a prog fight in general. I could mix in elements from other songs if that would help...

Why's that? No chops? Join the club... Anyway, you raised a good point. I'm up for a cover fight, but the original intention was to capture a mood (one that I haven't felt since I was 17).

On the contrary. I was playing Randy Rhodes solos when I was 12. Don't be fooled by Posi Traction. No drum chops though, but a machine could take care of that. I got everything else covered, just more fun to write yer own. This is one of those things like, in my songs I usually hold back from "wanking" for fear of being called a "wanker"...but in prog it's totally cool to wank, therefore I'd really prefer to do my own song just so I could be allowed to wank, in my own style versus someone else's.

Queen is in. Jack, you got it. Good one. Oh, man, this could be good...

Good to have you join us....bring the Canadians. Especially if you're all going to do Rush...it may have to be a requirement.

For the sake of limiting the scope of this fight, I'm voting Frank off the Island. Too bad, cause I love the guy.
tonetripper wrote:King Crimson would perhaps be the one group I would most like to cover. Anything off Discipline, if that counts since it's 81. Bill Bruford rules!!!!!!
Wow. Yeah, since it's King Crimson, anything goes. Same with Yes. Same with Rush. I might have to stake claim here before all the goodies get grabbed up. I've been thinking about Matte Kudesai (as I think I could play it, though I'm sure I'd mangle the vox. It may be too soft. I dunno. I'd really like to do Neurotica (is that on Discipline?), but won't do it any justice. I need to have another listen to "The Great Deceiver", but that might be first choice.

Roymond, you get whatever you want. You studied with Fripp. My dreams will have come true if you take Indiscipline..." I LIKE IT!"

Must say, I'm so happy to see everyone getting excited here. Looks like this may end up really kicking some arse. I'll let the thread roll for a while before we really start defining rules. What do you all think about a late summer/ early fall deadline?

Hehe...yeah, this is all going to be about the wank. I'd like to hear you resurect some Rhodes, though he may be too metal for this one.

I'll leave it up to the other wankers whether or not this needs to be a coverfight.

Good point. I'm new here, so any recommendations, suggestions, criticisms, are most welcome.

I know some of you are working on other sidefights, so I'm trying to give some breathing room. Also, because of the nature of this one, we may need a little extra time. (I know I will - programming Bruford's paradiddles will take at least a month alone ;) )

I like the late summer deadline. Canadians are crazy for summer as we only get a month of it  , so the more the deadline heads into fall the better. The redcar record is what is prioritized right now though, so we'll see. I'm hoping prog collab to take some of the burden away from one player.

I'd certainly be up for helping someone out on a prog cover - I would call Queen Pomp-rock not prog-rock and Fat Bottomed Girls is clearly clearly not a prog song.

If you want me on yr song, then let me know. Otherwise I will be bringing Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, replete with MIDI flute patch.
