Now it's a big gushy mushy thread!

Yay. Ya, I'm gonna try to get reviews done later this week. I think that Hurricane Egg is going to come eventually, and it will be the wackiest hurricane to waltz around the Gulf of Mexico in a while.

And to add to gushing, I like Boltoph too. Gert, in fact, can rock out like a big group of guys who has time to concentrate on rocking out which is sweet. Gert will outlive all criticism as will the Phunts and a lot of other cool people giving their all to SF regularly.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Uh.. also, I'm not being sarcastic.
And that's... um.. not a euphemism.
glug glug glug egg makes wine. You can make wine too.

Gert doesn't know what the RAWK is all aboot! Spert is the real Canadian super-group.
Spert rocks harder than Bryan Adams!
Spert rocks harder than Men Without Hats!
Spert rocks harder than Toto and REO Speedwagon combined! (Spert isn't sure if those last 2 were Canadian, but they sounded Canadian)

Spert brings the RAWK!!! eh.

(PS. Poodle-headed rock gods wanted to form supergroup - Canadian optional. Apply within)

I noticed you didn't mention Trooper or Helix. Now rocking harder than them would have impressed me thoroughly.

Spert's avatar photo . . . somewhat disturbing. The name fits the photo, though.

P.S. - Did you say Canadian? The Hanson Brothers (not the long haired kiddie group I mentioned in a previous post, but the hockey-loving puck rockers) are Canadian and they totally ROCK! So do the Vapids!

Unfortunately Spert couldn't find a suitable Canadian loin for Spert's avatar (all that cold weather you know) - so, of course, Spert substituted an Australian 'package'.

Bon Scott - we salute you (just as you are saluting us)

(...or should that be 'pair of loins'? Spert isn't sure)

Bryan Adams? Bryan Adams doesn't rock, he cuts. Like a knife.
You forgot: Spert rocks harder than Gordon Lightfoot, Spert rocks harder than Celine Dion

I think spert is Caravan Ray.

The Bon Scott thing gave it away...

But thats alright, that's ok

Even if his avatar looks kinda pink.

But toto was American I think.

I did see REO at the hockey rink.

Oh, and Bill, I was just being a goof.

Hope that didn't put you through the roof.

absolutely, file under "nails, the heads of which have been hit on," thanks bill. i can't even remember if i've ever had them... what are they, like, licorice with candy shells? but anyway, i was looking for sporting event/movie/spectator food, and they were the first thing i hit on that fit the meter.

i want to apologise for not posting sooner. i was gigging on the weekend and the hotel only had dial-up, then when i got back work turned into a living, breathing shitstorm. i meant to write some reviews and get to work on a song for next week, but all that's up in the air at the moment.

but for now, thanks for the kind words, i'm hearing some really interesting stuff here, can't imagine why i didn't enter the ring sooner, this is a gas, and the crackling sound is a faux vinyl-sampled breakbeat kick and snare from my rack synth. not the best choice in retrospect. kind of like the wankers who used to use shakuhachi instead of flute back in the day because it sounded "more interesting."

cheers

What do you mean the vocals aren't as funky? How could the vocals have been improved?

a japanese flute, wankers, and in the 80's when the general midi spec was adopted.

most of the gm versions of the shakuhachi (in its real life form a pretty cool instrument) featured a breathy, almost-overblown attack and a pitch warble which, if you played the right notes while closing your eyes, wishing real hard, and screaming at the top of your lungs, almost sounded like the fairlight sample popularized by jan hammer's miami vice theme and gabriel's sledgehammer.

Bax
I love that first chord change, and the third! and back. Serious opportunities for layering shit and building up a huge mix here. You like to keep the listener waiting with unexpected sort of ideas. You really could have a monsterous little instrumental here. So many vocal ideas could have happened.

Caravan Ray
Even the tone of the initial vocal just fits the melody perfect. That initial title catch is the shit. Belongs in a western, so good. I love the turnaround about Frankie but don't know who he is. Chorus doesn't hit me hard because I can't identify. But man, I keep jumping back to the beginning because I really really love those very first I hate you's.

Chuck Chuck Moose
Sweet grooving acoustic guitar part. The tambourine is a good addition but almost could've skipped the drum programming. It's a good vocal and acoustic guitar groove. I could chill out jamming that acoustic guitar groove for hours. Dig the trumpet.

Comfort
It's late, I've been drinkin and in a haze and such. This just blew my mind. Two of the guitar changes just hit my soul and mad me so sad. Theres an underneath melody in those guitar parts.

Dark Liberty
Felt like kinda a rough start. The vocal's off key. I think you should scream your lungs right out. You gotta get way into that. If you're not working up a massive sweat singing the lead vocal of this, then you're not doing it right. Drum solo almost rocked in a Black Sabbath way, but....Rough change at 1:20...

Dean Sky
Te Amo Sofia! Yes I know this song! Oh such a nice keyboard slide I have to admit. Oh yeah. Ola muchacha? you callin me a sistah? Like a tranny on a ten?

Frankie Big Face
The first chord change is so sweet. Saves me from something I just worried about hearing. Good change. People said, Bowie, I hear that. I like it too, I'm a big fan. This is a very well done song, but wanders a bit later on. I really like the "not everything you want" in the chorus.

Hillybilly
The vibe of this just puts me back to thinking about every girl I broke up with or who broke up with me. Makes it hurt. God this is thorns poking in. It's really good and heartbreaking. Yeah, that's the real me. thanks man.

Latex Underpants
The vocal saved me from feeling like this was squaring up my soul like lego pegs to fit into unpleasant parts of each other. Any other choice of instrument would've pleased me, I think. Not bad if I think of it as a chant.

Monosodium Glutamate
Man I haven't had a little debbie oatmeal pie in probably five years but used to love those things.

Phunt Your Friends
I think you know how crazy this could be with a band. You are System of a Down. Just imagine this with drums, bass, guitar, and vox. This completely blows my mind. by 1:30 you've gone in a million directions. And even more chilling: I feel like you're talking to me personally. You love it. The hatrid comes through at 2:00. One may also suggest I want to hear the whole beginning part again. and again. And the dramatic keys from 3:25 to 3:54.

The Rant
Yeea! Turn up those guitars. and no reverb. Dammit. This is punk, you gotta scream it. Scream it. I hear the I hate you come in as a screaming rhythmic thing at 1:05 just one line screamed. the whole band screaming the title.

Rik Gerblik
I like the roundabout way you moved the chords right from the start. And then brought the band that I didn't expect. You've got good style in your voice, too. The vocals could come clearer through on the chorus. It almost has a rock/country feel but there could be a little more pop keeping it from there. This would just feel real good at a bar. It flows smooth, it's real commercial...like I'm not a sucker for that. sure. heh. catchy tune. nice little bass move on the prechorus.

State Shirt
That guitar right in the beginning is slamming. I want to hear more screaming emotion in the verse vocals, the screaming title in the chorus kinda snuck up on me. Really interesting changes. Disturbing. Playing out a suicide, it feels like. The backing harmonies are great. The abrupt changes around 2:50 keep me riveted. This should be backing in a action suspense movie. Really gripping. The death metal addition is mind blowing.

Stuey M
It's a great relaxing groove, have to say I'd like to hear congas more than the kit. The catch for me is the "anything at all, all" before the title line. Would be great to hear more build on that line, more voices. It's got a feeling of doom looming, I can give it that. I hear a rap from 2:30 out. a hard hitting city style rap. I'd dig that.

Takasonic + Mandown Five
Holy...the first line...it sounds like you're laughing, but a little pissed, all at the same time! I love the "you nevah..", and the title line. I mean, it's just so delicate yet chaotic. you might say, this gets me a little psyched. There's a lot of energy right from the start. It just makes me smile too much not to vote. Here's to Rockon and the T-rok. :-)

Wally Harbinger
Starts of quick and I like how the keys and vocals both grab me right on "your death again". Sounds like it's going to be sad, then turns parody. Works good with the title. I lost attention until "disembowelments", but the solo brought me back a little that tone is nice. The vocals are pretty funny.

Gert
Ah so smooth, yet chafing. Greasy, but got a good grip.

A few people have mentioned that they are not familiar with Mr Laine's work - I suppose he is best remembered for "Rawhide" - which is why I stole that bit of melody for the opening

The vocals are a little hard to make out, I would've liked them a little more prominent in the mix. I love the intro riff. How did you record the guitar for that? I has a nice meaty crunch to it.
"Legendary" makes me feel old. Heh. The guitar was recorded direct through the Pod 2.0. I don't remember which settings--I just toy around until I find something that works.

Thank you to all who commented on my song; it is much appreciated. I'll try to do some reviews today; I've been out of town all week.
