Balloon Wine

1 gallon bottle
12 oz. frozen juice concentrate
1 package yeast
4 1/2 cups sugar

Dissolve yeast, put all ingredients in gallon bottle. Add cool water to shoulder of bottle, but balloon over top. Let set for 21 days. Siphon off wine into quart bottles, cap loosely until set. Makes about 3 1/2 quarts.
Sounds like pruno, which is prison "wine". Here's two dudes who were brave enough to make this stuff and then try and get drunk off it, even though they weren't in prison at the time and had other stuff available to get drunk off of.

fluffy wrote:My point is just that you shouldn't spend lots of money validating the con artists' tripe, just so that you can feel free to delude yourself into thinking that things taste better. You'd might as well just say that waving your hands over the bottle makes it taste better too; it's a lot cheaper, and doesn't fund a lifestyle of lies.
Hahahah...your kidding right? I'm not sure I need your protection from myself, thanks tho..

First off, Flim Flam is an awesome book. Good of you to introduce the psychic powers of spoon bending into wine tasting..nice work. Tho I'm not sure James Randi has a challenge for wine taste...2nd, what "lot's of money" are you talking about? it's $25! Where did you get the idea I spent it so I could feel free to delude...blah blah blah...what? Lifestyle of lies? What does that mean? You are getting more nonsensical every post, ...first I'm bringing loads of shit, now I'm supporting a "lifestyle of lies". Holy porcupines, are you on glue?
You are making huge leaps away from your own support of the "method". Why don't you spend some time learning how the world around you works before making assumptions about it? It appears there are thousands of processes that YOU may be unaware of for all the evidence you got going...I guess the point really is this: I have tried it. You have not. I read somewhere today that the current understanding of tannin in wine is limited. Right or wrong, I dunno. It's effect is certainly subjective. For that matter, taste is wholly SUBJECTIVE. From your posts, you've got to have at least a few papers that definitively explain how tannin content in wine is NOT manipulated at all by waving your arms over the bottle or magnets or crystals or pyramids, right? My illustration is a little silly but ...gimme some proof man, or stop the science crusade, you aren't doing it any favours. You prove to ME it doesn't work. I already like it and have tasted the results... Not trying to be argumentative, but you demand methodology in testing and science this and that, yet offer NONE to refute my claim that it works. Except of course, that nice article that Spud kindly linked to...

The kicker here, is that the only bit of evidence you've supported is that same link Spud supplied, Dan's Data.

Dan's Data: PC Hardware & Gadgets Reviewed

now THAT is some expert testimonial stuff there. I'm sure he's fully accredited in chemical engineering and a certified wine expert. Good job. He must know more about it than me or anyone who likes the thing...I mean, after all, he DOES review PC Hardware and Gadgets, INDEPENDENTlY no less.... :)

LOL...I'm gonna try really hard to stop posting to this. I challenge you Fluffy, go buy one and try it. And send me a note with the results, without getting all uppity-science about it. You are allowed to have a different opinion on it for sure. If you ever find the hard science to back you up, please send it along.

Cheers, and happy drinking!!!! (hic!)

Hey Everyone!

It's been brought to my attention that in my zeal for debate, I might have overdone it.

My intention was only good fun in debate, but intentions mean nothing, perception is everything.

So my apologies to anyone who was put off by my relentless typing, and to Fluffy for chasing his position down so hard. I meant no harm by it at all. I don't want to be looked at as a whiner, or the guy who can't shut up.

Thanks to the person who gave me the heads up as well! Feedback is sometimes the only way to learn about yourself. I guess I've been listening to my guitar's feedback for too long.....

Cheers All!

Don't worry about drinking the scary-sounding juice wine, it'll be fine. As long as fermentation is successful (the balloon inflates), it's producing alcohol (yes, good old CH3CH2OH) and the alcohol combined with the acidic environment will kill off whatever nasties might creep up.

that reminds me.. i was on this BBS like ten or twelve or something years ago, and because it was a "family oriented" board, they filtered out certain words that were considered to be naughty. we loved to pick on the filter, because it wouldn't allow you to say words like "chardonnay"...

(of course it was easily circumvented because the filter wasn't bright enough to recognise colour-changing characters. so you could just stick some of them in the middle of the word, like "f\7u\7c\7k off"...)

Oh good - I'm not the only person in the world who thinks Chardonnay tastes like bats' piss. (or Card-anay as it's sometimes called down here - does anywhere else in the world get the wonderful Australian sit-com Kath & Kim on TV?)

Anyone play that Leisure Suit Larry:Magna Cum Laude yet? (heh- I just said 'Cum')

It is juvenile toilet humour pretty much all the way through. I loved it. The scene in the gay bar where Larry is dancing with the big gay bodybuilder and the older man set to 'Summer Days' from Grease (but with lyrics changed) was probably the funniest thing I've ever witnessed, ever. Trust me on this. It was brilliant. Buy the damned game. Or get it from usenet. You will not be disappointed. Saith me.

[edit] And I have no idea why this was posted in this fuckin' wine thread.

Incidentally I have tried this wine express thingy that PinV has spoken about. My buddy, who worked ona documentary on wines and the making of (not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but a connoiseur), got one as a gift from some friends and my pessimistic waiter instinct kicked in (waited on tables back in the day) when he tried to serve me the wine and I said, "No way that it can do that.......". And lo and behold I tasted a lovely wine, as it was placed before my snout, from France, that was considered a fairly new wine, that was basted over the express and I was pleasantly surprised at how much body it had (Rooaaaarrrr!!!).

Now I am probably less skeptical than the PinVmeister but twice as paranoid, especially when it comes to the idea of getting burned, and I have to say it worked great as a way to not have to pour the wine into a decantor and let it oxygenate the wine first. It really did seem to bring the tannins into strong perspective. I wouldn't go out and buy one, mind you, as I prefer the decantor (Sorry buddy  ), but if someone gave me one as a gift it certainly would be nice when you need to crack one quickly for an impromptu visit from friends with a bottle.

I've been invited to attend a local wine tasting group's monthly get-together. We're all supposed to pick (and bring) an Australian wine. Recommendations? I'll be limited to what I can find here in NH, of course, but suggestions welcome!

I mostly like reds best.
Penfolds is a good provider, easy to find here. e.g. Bin 389 Cab Shiraz is great. Lots of different types, though.
If you want to go a little pricier, Creed "The Pretty Miss" is fantastic. Shiraz blend.
d'Arenberg Stump Jump is cool, Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre ($10?)

If there's time, you could have Caravan Ray whip up a batch of your balloon wine and mail it to you.
......in a waterproof envelope. You can call it, Caravan Ray's Gonfler le noeud, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Anything in a Penfold's bottle will do the trick for reds. You should be able to get it over there - and it will impress the wine tossers. If you prefer white, as I do - get something from Margaret River or Swan Valley, Western Australia.

Better still - if the people in your club seem a bit clueless - try convincing them that the South Island of New Zealand is in Australia and get a Marlborough Sauvingon Plonk. It is the only thing getting me through the NZ winter.

....edit

...or read what I wrote 4 years ago in this thread:
Caravan Ray wrote:
For mine, you cant go wrong with Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet (Barossa Valley SA) or Houghtons White Burgundy (Swan Valley WA) - both at about AUD$10-$15, they more than suffice for my everyday drinking needs.

Otherwise I may lash out and spend up tp AUD$20 on one of the Sauvingon Blancs from Marlborough in New Zealand. It's not often I have anything good to say about the Kiwi's, but I can't fault their South Island wines. Or Steinlager beer.

The important thing to remember is, wine is to be drunk (often) and enjoyed. It is not a status symbol, nor should it be a topic of excessive conversation (I'm not referring to thread, I mean the people who drone on and on and on about good years and noble rot and ceramic corks blah blah blah).

Knock the top off a bottle and neck it - if it sucks, spit it out and knock the top of another one (..and repeat)
...nothing seems to have changed
