well, it looks like this is really shaping up and we have a good crowd of interested parties.

so, about the only left to nail down is the frequency of the rounds.

once a week (quick and dirty) or every other week (lots of possibilities)? what's it going to be, folks?

Niveous? The initial shows could be pretty big, but perhaps once the contestant-pool is widdled down to a manageable number it would be more practical.
That sounds wicked. Do we have anybody who wants to be in charge of that?

I prefer once a week. That way the momentum keeps going. I don't see a huge advantage having it be two weeks.

Plus, before we start, are you going to get an official list of participants?

I think that there should be a week to write. But depending on the voting process we may need time in between. Every other week could work well if it's

Week 1 write: week 2 vote: week 3 write: ....

I agree with jack ... There's something cutthroat about weekly elimination which suits the spirit of the fight.

The only issue I see is the lag between the end of the fight and the judges' decision. The winners will want to know right away so they can start on the next fight, where the judges will want a day or two to review. But then, there's nothing to stop someone working on a song even if they think they might get "eliminated" (or whatever we're calling it) the next day.

So yeah ... I vote for once a week.

Also: is there some kind of official sign-up process?

That's the issue I was talking about - I didn't mean to suggest the fighters need a week off, just that the judging would require some period of time.

Ah, I see that now.

So what do you think about "there's nothing to stop someone working on a song even if they think they might get eliminated?" Worst case, the loser every week ends up with a new song.

And it just occured to me: doing it this way might add a little safety in the event of drop-outs.

Or something.

well, the amount of time to create the song shouldn't be much of a problem if we're using the songfight titles. if you work up a song but are elminated, you still have a songfight song ready to go.

if you work up a jury title, well, hell, you still have a nice little song.

and it certainly would help with the possible drop-out problem.

one last possible snag: if we use the songfight titles, what happens if there's an extension or shift in the due date? are the rounds going to be every calendar week (i.e., submit your song by Friday, 5 p.m. EST)? or simultaneous with the songfight deadline (which is pretty regular, but there are tweaks and hiccups)?

How about this - jury comes up with a title - which each contestant can record a song with, once, as a kind of 'joker card' - i.e. if they record a song that satisifies the judges that they have used the title well, they are exempt that week from being voted off?

Maybe too complicated ... what do people think?

Okay folks,

I've been watching this thread for a while and might I say that this whole sidefight has become a bit convoluted. It's a wonderful idea but with so many hands in its creation, it's running a bit wild. Sometimes a sidefight needs one person to step up and run the show while everyone else takes part. Example- Gift of Music, my idea, Eddie helped, and so it goes. Skirmish- Sober's idea, sober ran with it. ABBAfight- Bjam's idea, she ran with it. So on and so forth.

Since this has been more of a collaborative effort, it's a bit different so how about this suggestion:

Nur Ein (working title- it's German for "Only One")

* 25 Bands enter into the Nur Ein but in the end, there can be only one winner.

* Each fight will take eight days to complete and will be a challenge of skill, creativity and a battle against time.

* On Day 1, a song title will be named (as chosen by the host and the jury). It will not be a songfight title as the sidefight will run on its own timeframe.

* With every title, there will be non-optional challenge attached. An example would be something like 'the lyrics must include a civil war reference' or 'the lyrics cannot make any reference to love' or 'all chords, no single notes', etc. You get the idea.

* The bands will have 5 days to complete the challenge song.

* There will also be an obscenely hard music trivia challenge. The first person to come up with the right answer wins immunity and goes onto the next round of the Nur Ein without having to make a song. This is good for those with time problems.

* Songs will be self-hosted (if you don't have space, ask me or J$).

* After the deadline, the songs will be strung into a podcast or hosted stream (a la last year's SF Radio) that can be enjoyed, while the Jury (The 3 J's) deliberate.

* Reviews and loud talking is encouraged but the jury will not be swayed (except by large bribes).

* On the 8th day, the jury will make their decision and some fighters will be eliminated. Here's the elimination breakdown:
Stage 1: 25 bands- 5 eliminations
Stage 2: 20 bands- 5 eliminations
Stage 3: 15 bands- 4 eliminations
Stage 4: 11 bands- 4 eliminations
Stage 5: 7 bands- 3 eliminations
Stage 6: 4 bands- 2 eliminations
Stage 7: 2 bands- the vote of the exiles chooses the winner.
NUR EIN!

* The band with the jury's favorite song gets an exemption.

* If the songs are of exceptional quality, we can adjust the amount of eliminations to add extra rounds.

*On that 8th day, after the eliminations are made, the new challenge title is released and the next stage begins.

How does that sound? If it's a workable idea, I'll play host. We already have our wonderful jury of the 3 J's. Either J$ or myself can host a webspace for it. So all we need is the go ahead.

Sweet, Niveous. Great format.

Can I add one sugggestion? The immunity thing should only apply to the first few rounds. With 7 or so bands left, it should be all about the songwriting.
Niveous wrote:So all we need is the go ahead.
If you're going to serve as host, you could start collecting names now. Set a deadline of, say, March 1st for people to sign up. That oughta get the ball rolling :)

Edit: Also, I love the name!!!

1) Definitely immunity will go away after a few rounds.
2) Let's see what everyone else thinks after me taking control of the concept before collecting names.
3) Thanks. I dig having the German name.

I'd like to volunteer to make the web page for the week's fights. I'm going to make it streamable, with an embedded media player, so there won't have to be a bunch of downloading before the enjoyment portion can commence.
