So I made a CD top listen to on the way to and from work today. A very enjoyable ride. I basically enjoyed everything in this fight. My comments, which apparently focus on weaknesses, are below. I have no idea who I would kick off at this point.
It’s also getting different to review – although I still have the competitive spirit I feel less like we’re competitors and more like we’re all in this together.
On to the comments:
Bewells- great feel. I agree it whets the appetite for a fully developed piece. A great start to this stream. Sorry to see you go. I suspect that your “pencil me in" will remain one of my favorites of Nur Ein. Challenge - 0
Calfborg – as always I like your general sound. The lyrics leave me lukewarm. And I felt the development isn’t quite enough to support the length. Challenge – minimal
Deshead – I like the guitar sound lots. Weird contrast between the verse and chorus. I think the parrotheads will love this. Solid Deshead sound. Bar song. Ok. Challenge – not met??
GC – this has just a touch too much edginess in it for me. I realize that may be content driven, like “Cold Turkeyâ€

Great, so just cause you live down under you get an extra day.

And get the titles a day late ...

Oh yeah, Deshy makes my brown eyes green.
I have earned a lot more respect for Deshead's music over the span of the nur ein. But I just happened to think that this week's song was abysmal. the last two- great. They're even in my regular jukebox rotation. This week- bad commercial jingle w/o female vocals.

This time around I seem even meaner than last week. Well, maybe the songs were a little worse? But really, take everything that sounds mean not as an insult, but as advice for what not to do in the next round.
Ross Durand: The only complaint I’ve got is that it’s a little too long (same ol’ thing after a while). But man, this sounds like a song that’s already been turned into a classic, that you’ll still find on old dusty jukeboxes in Texas and that, when you play it, will prompt cowgirl-type bartenders and waitresses to exclaim “Oh! You like that song? I love that song!â€

well, i really don't understand the need for such a mean spirited review of his song. keep in mind that he DIDN"T HAVE TO EVEN DO A SONG. so the non-optional challenge was certainly optional (as was the song) for him.
seriously. this is supposed to be fun so there is really no need to pretend to be simon in that capacity.

wow, jack. That's a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. We all can be a bit scathing in our reviews at times. But upon review of my review, I will admit that I was too harsh. He may not have had to enter a song (though Nur Ein etiquette seems to call for it), but he did and I really did dislike it greatly. I shouldn't have been snarky and said that comment about him being lucky that he has immunity. I was just heavily disappointed in Deshead. I would've rathered him not enter a song than enter a song and completely disregard the non-option challenge. It's part of the Nur Ein and disregarding it and sending in something that felt like (to me) that he didn't really try hard; it felt like a smack in the face. I shouldn't have reacted in such a manner and I apologize. Next time, I'll reel it in a bit when it comes to my reviews.

yeah, i can be harsh too, and i'm not singling you out dude. i respect the fact you have an opinion and can express it any way you want to. i've read other people's snarky comments here, but i just don't think it's either productive or necessary. it's not just you by any means.
but that particular comment seemed a bit over the top.

Yeah, I was a bit over the top and I do apologize. It wasn't constructive.
Here's a more constructive review:
Deshead- The guitars are very strong and the vocals are clean and crisp as usual. But I really have a problem with some of the lyrics. One thing is that you made very odd choices on the end lines for your verses- for instance the "Likes his meat" line tends to stick out like a sour thumb. Same with the "Little bit of cheese" and since it's a higher note, it's very noticeable. It's catchy but in that Macarena catchy way. It's poppy and cute but way too campy for my tastes.

A side note about our entry of El Balazo:
I have read a couple of reviews that mention Rachael and I singing at the same time, and that did not happen in the song. Rachael is every voice in the chorus parts, I am every voice in the verses.
And now you know!
ROCK!

FWIW, I didn't ignore the non-optional challenge. I did a disservice to Sarah, however, by mixing her vocals too low.
Here's the
first chorus with her part exaggerated. Listen to my track again and you'll probably hear her voice. (And it's more obvious in headphones.)

Thanks Niv.

I still can't tell that she's there. But I understand the problem. I had the same one with my Kandagawa Hitmen song in the Eagles fight. Only if you listen ultra-close, you can hear Aurora singing on the chorus.

Oh wow.
::mind wanders off to an imaginary song performed by the Redmons and Rachael Layne, with dueling female vocals::

aw, i'm gonna cry now.
i'm amazingly sad about this, especially considering i mostly joined the competition so that niv would have 25 bands and fully expected to be eliminated in the first round. however, making it to the third round and entering a song i was really happy with, then seeing mostly positive reviews set me up for disappointment. oh well, it was fun.
now i have to try to rebuild my shattered confidence for the live show tomorrow. that, and practice my songs.

there is no shame in trying, and soon enough, everyone else but one will be in the same position as you.
you made it to round 3. you should be proud of that.

Don't feel bad, HInc. You were a competitor and I hope that you're in this again next time.
And Jack's right, soon a couple more bands are gonna fall. It's still anyone's battle.
