But seriously the most important thing to a Jehovah's Witness is the bible. To me the bible is an authority. We try very hard to adhere stricly to the bible. And that the bible should viewed as a manual for happy life.
It is of vital importance to them that their beliefs be based on the Bible and not on mere human speculations or religious creeds. From this it is apparent that Jehovah's Witnesses believe in the Bible as the Word of God. They consider its 66 books to be inspired and historically accurate. What is commonly called the New Testament they refer to as the Christian Greek Scriptures, and the Old Testament they call the Hebrew Scriptures. They rely on both of these, the Greek and the Hebrew Scriptures, and take them literally except where the expressions or settings obviously indicate that they are figurative or symbolic. They understand that many of the prophecies of the Bible have been fulfilled, others are in the course of fulfillment, and still others await fulfillment.
And a little about our name:
Jehovah's Witnesses? Yes, that is the way they refer to themselves. It is a descriptive name, indicating that they bear witness concerning Jehovah, his Godship, and his purposes. "God," "Lord," and "Creator"—like "President," "King," and "General"—are titles and may be applied to several different personages. But "Jehovah" is a personal name and refers to the almighty God and Creator of the universe.

excellent. so you guys stone men who refuse to wear full beards? also, are you allowed to have canadian and mexican slaves? i bet Leaf would make a good wood-choppin' slave.
no one, anywhere, lives by the bible. it is internally inconsistent and filled with antisocial, illegal, and morally untenable practices.
Jehovah's Witnesses, just like every other judaoxtian sect, take what they want from the bible and leave the rest.

Like many (most?) Christian religions, JW's believe that that Jesus brought about the end of the Mosaic Law. So saying that you live by the Bible and saying that you shouldn't own slaves or stone people are not contradictory statements.

so JW's don't believe in the ten commandments?
whaaatever.
excellent method of proving my point about each subcult cherry picking the bible, tho.
(not that i believe you)
uh, actually, jesusboy up there quoted directly from the JW web site, but i'll repeat it:

Christians still believe 10 commandments ... even if you don't believe in God, these are pretty great guidelines to live by. From what I've learned, the thing is that we believe that the old law is replaced by the new law of Jesus. Things get confusing there, but there was one point in Jesus' life where he was questioned by the Pharisees what was the most important law and he didn't even say any of the 10 commandments. He said 'love your neighbour as yourself'. I'm not sure if that's the exact words or exact line, and if it isn't that, tell me, but I think that pretty much sums up Christianity. We (apparently) don't believe so much in the laws, but more about love and following Christ ... it's pretty crazy.

As Jolly pointed out, Jesus was the end of the law, but Christians follow his teachings and he re-iterated all of the principles of the 10 commandments, esp the first two, love God, and love your neighbor. He made reference to others at other times as well. Christians are not bound by the old law, but that doesn't mean that they don't live by many of the same standards. For example, government laws forbid you from murdering or stealing, but just because you adhere to those laws and they are included in the 10 commandments doesn't mean you're bound by the Mosaic law. That also doesn't mean that JW's don't take the bible literally. It means God had a particular set of instructions for one group of people, and then when Jesus died and made much of the Mosaic law unnecessary (such as animal sacrifices) the people were given a new set of instructions.

As much as I have tried to veer away from this thread, I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway. Of the many immutable laws of the universe, I know these 2 to be true and relative:
You have found "God", and you're happy about it.
You have not found "God", and you don't understand those who claim they have.
And when these 2 groups meet a big pointless discussion breaks out because both sides feel as though the other is trying to convert them.
Believe whatever the heck makes you happy folks. And take care of those you love.

i'd argue that most friction arises between different sects who firmly believe themselves to have found the right god.
there probably aren't enough athiests to mount a good holy war.

it is now.
but, seriously, christianity - being, as it was, a liberal reformation of judaism - was very convient for the christians. it was a great equalizer.

I still want one of the xtians here to suitably argue my apparent paradox on the existance of god. (it's the 2nd or 3rd post on the thread)
I've asked literally dozens of bible-types (including a few JWs, rodeoguy.. hint) not one of them would give me an answer. The overwhelming impression I got from most of them was "fuck off and don't ask stupid questions about TEH GOD, you heretic"
First person who says 'God works in mysterious ways' gets virtually punched in the face.

Ok, I'll give this a go, although I don't think i forfill your desired criteria. This is all, of course, just what I think.
First of all, Satan. I think Satan is made up, which I suppose seems odd if you believe in the existance of a God, but there you go. I think Satan might just be Humanities way to put a face on 'evil' and make it seem more personal somehow and less random. Well, thats Satan covered, and pretty quickly too.
As for the construction of Humanity itself, fuck, its
God. I don't know what a God wants, so I don't know what the use of Humanity, or even reality is. I just figure I'm here, and I'll make the best of it.

There seems to be way to much stress on this thread. My E-meter is going off scale.
Now, we know that we are all Thetans who were dropped into volcanos thousands of years ago. I think a lot of you people need a good auditing or you will never reach OT VIII.
