Yeah, the whole "You're just jealous of the thing that you hate" is so retarded. Yeah, sometimes people are jealous, but sometimes they are earnest in their displeasure for something else. To say that everyone who finds nothing to like about Yngwie is simply jealous overlooks the simple fact that not every style of music appeals to every person.
It's okay to not like whole styles of music.
It's okay to think that certain people have produced nothing worthwhile to the sum total of popular music.

Very true. The Go-Betweens also had some memorable "2-noters". And if I recall corrrectly, "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones features a superb 1-note guitar solo.
Jimi Hendrix should take note that for any future records - then he may not be so annoying. I have no idea who Malmsteen is.

Neither do I enjoy Malsteem either. I can't even be bothered to spell his name properly...not that I'd neccessarily try if I liked him either.
Frank Zappa. Excellent example. HE was a fuckin genius, and an amazing player. And there is a meaness to his music that I for some reason really appreciate.
AS far as this list goes though...this time list... puke.
IT was already stated by someone else... listing compelation albums.... gimme a break. I find lists generated by individuals much more interesting than these media outlet "self delcared greatest of all time lists".
Here are albums, for whatever reason, that I personally consider great.

Neil Young's "Vampire Blues" has a masterful 1-noter too.

That was the most awesome thing I've ever seen.
Except that one thing that was more awesome.

...but if you're constantly showing that off it leads me to believe that it's because you can't actually write a tune worth listening to. So congrats to Malmsteem. You can play really fucking fast and technical pieces, but, ultimately, that's not the goal of music. The goal of music is to connect with the listener and create some sort of feeling. I can't see Malmsteem's music creating that effect in anyone.
Al Dimiola was an amazing jazz player fresh out of school. Then his chops became so clean and he bored me to high heaven.
Steve Howe was an amazing player when he was still rough around the edges. Then his chops became so clean and he bored me to death.
Larry Carlton was an amazing player when he was jamming with Steely Dan, etc. Then he was shot in the shoulder, found god and became a super clean chops man and bored me to tears.
Fripp...
Heaven, death, tears. Whatever. I don't have an explanation. But I find that these guys were lost in their technique or they just ran out of ideas. or inspiration. Ideas?

Certainly not defending that swedish wanker, but what about classical artists such as Nicolo Paganini? All he did was play fast and technical pieces on violin (and a bit of guitar) and he's regarded as one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time.

I'm not familiar with Paganini or any of the guys Roymond listed.
As far what Roymond said...

Rivers Cuomo. The Blue album is amazing and a classic. Pinkerton was incredible in its rough around the edges popness. But then Rivers started consulting his notebook about how to write perfect pop songs and his music started sounding uninspired. I think there's a definite correlation between paying too much attention to technique and just playing from the gut that leads to uninteresting music.
I don't know if anyone else feels the same way, but I've been bored with Beck's last two albums. I feel like he's trying to reproduce his Odelay sound and it just doesn't work it. I think that's a definite technique thing as well.

Paganini is generally regarded as one of the greatest violinists of all time, not one of the greatest composers. His playing was definitely influential and led to an increased breadth in violin writing, though.

I 100% agree with that. Too much technique is like practicing in front of people...who wants to listen to someone recite the alphabet... or read from the dictionary?
Obviously everyone has different tastes... as this disccusion evolves, I realize that I like stuff that (to me, of course) blends between inspired ideas, technical clarity, and emotion... I have no idea if I'm making myself clear..but I'm not sure it really matters...
My wife just turned off the oven I left on... thanks hon.

This, or something like it, seems to be the way to go. Sure, it's nice to take a blast down the Autobahn with so and so or mope along with them guys, but a good balance is what most of us probably end up preferring. The extremes are fun to visit, but not to necessarily unpack your backs and move in with. Well, maybe for a little while.

Ditto what Leaf said. Music is a science and a form of art, all at once. Sometimes the science is the art. While a simple emo tune can identify with the woes of a troubled generation, a complexly played classical tune can identify with paying audiences who want to be wow'd and are willing to pay top dollar to see something that took years of work to accomplish.
I guess technically complex music is to entertainment; as emo performer is to group psychotherapy session.
Frank Sinatra sucks. WTF? Did he even write his own tunes? I'll post a Liszt of my favourite albums too. Let's start with Bela Fleck, Jurassic 5, and Kings of Leon.
Time magazine sucks. I bet they go by album sales.

I have 8 of those albums.
5 of them are Beatles, two are Miles Davis, and one is Radiohead (OK Computer, as I haven't gotten Kid A yet).
I don't like this list.

Sort of on topic, I just watched an incredible video of Leo Kottke playing "Vaseline Machine Gun," only to be horrified by people saying "He's no Malmsteen." I just... I just don't know.

Only 25% for me.
Where is the Pixies "Doolittle'? And "Stop Making Sense" by Talking Heads is there - but no "77" or "Remain In Lighht"?
It is a particularly dumb list

1%.
And it's Garth Brooks.

If the criterion is "currently own", I clock in at 5%.
For "own or once owned", it's 8%.
However, I own 16 of the titles on Leaf's list, about 35%. Make of that whatever you will.
