A lot of punk rock bands do stuff like that which is awesome. Blink 182 did an entire tour where tickets were $1 each. These bands make it more about the fans and the music than the money which is wicked.

Point 1: Against Me's guitarist is technically a better singer than their lead singer but the ling singer has a rougher sound and thats what is working for them.

I somehow missed this thread. When it just got bumped I thought "Man, I should go in and post my favorite band", only to see that you have stolen it.

Oh well, their newest album makes me question the whole "of all time" thing. So instead I will say Doug Cheatwood.

Almost anything off MSI's first album (Tight) is solid gold, and there are some very good songs on their second (Frankenstein Girls). They have had quite an influence on me. Predominantly a bad one.

And while I'm pimping albums bands I like, Doug Cheatwood just released a greatest hits collection of sorts.

Puce, I remember thinking about your first sf entry: "This sounds kinda like MSI."

radiohead by far. i don't know anyone that can make better music.

However, Genesis is taking a close second ever since I bought Nursery Cryme, and Red Hot Chili Peppers is a big favorite since I bought Stadium Arcadium.

Roger, do you ever listen to any Rush? Get some of their early stuff. I think Rush should be a requirement for all drummers. Peart is one of the greats. Check out some of the vids on his site.

Thing with Neil is, he's awesome at what he does, but he's not that good in the improvising world. Orchestration? Oh yeah. Cerebral concepts and lyrics? Oh yeah. Neat ideas? yep. consistency? definitely.

Breaking out of his mold or improvising? ....nah.

I do enjoy his stuff though... how can anyone pick a "favourite" band of all time... I am incapable of picking a number one favourite, and much more in favour of "fav of the moment".

I sure am enjoying Paul Gilbert stuff right now.

I've honestly never enjoyed Rush, which is strange because I'm a total prog junkie. Neil Peart is a great drummer, but his teaching methods are pretty weak from what I've seen in his DVDs.

Two things I should put out here for potential/current drummers -

Drummerworld - a great place to find exciting drummers and links to their bands.

Josh Freese - one of my current favorite drummers ... very tasteful, but if you check him out on Youtube, you can find some footage of his chops. Wow.

Paul Gilbert is amazing! I like most of his music that I've heard. The first time I heard of him was when a friend showed me this Paul Gilbert guitar solo. I'm still blown away when I watch it.

I've been listening to a lot of Marc Seal lately. Not sure if he's known nationally, so here's a link. His CD, "All Souls Rising" kicks ass. That clip is at the Coach House where I pretty much exclusively play at and go see shows.

You know what's terrible? Genesis is touring again, and they've just come to Canada. Where in Canada? Toronto. Ottawa. Montreal. Nowhere in the West. This is the typical story with every band I like - when it comes to touring time, they realize that there are more people in the east; therefore nobody will go to a show in the West. Where is the logic in that?

However, I don't blame them for not wanting to play at the Saddledome - the acoustics of our dome are terrible.

Well then JR, you now have a new goal. Petition for a better amphitheaters in your neck of the snow, and bug the sh!t out of the promoters that handle your bands.
It's not the bands fault, they just go where they're told. If they get enough requests, they can pull strings.

Let us know how that goes.

The bands that have most affected me are Insane Clown Posse and SlipKnoT. Though I understand many people dislike them. I know ICP aren't very good rappers, but I think they do what they do best, and I give them props for it. SlipKnoT was the first band I ever really got into and I've never really stopped listening to them.

FAVORITE band though?

I think Sonata Arctica has surpassed Dream Theater for me (at this point). I'm sure DT will take back the crown, but Unia is just such a great album.
