For the record, I also had no problem with the dulcimer, but I liked most of the other songs better in that fight.

Seeing BoRe go this round is kind of depressing - however, a 6+ minute song will be fun to see.

In fairness, some of the songs there in the 6-8 minute range took slightly more than six days to compose but there isn't really any more improvisation than you'll find in the shorter ones.

I readily accept, however, that my experiences do not reflect those of most people, and also that all those long songs are not popular. But I expect you to be better at making songs than I am; that's why you are doing it and I am just being a wise ass about it. At any rate, your clock is ticking so less whine and more ein.

I am more of a 3 minute per song guy, myself, but I think that's the idea of the challenge. Can you make a 6 minute song that doesn't suck?

EDIT: The original version of "Thaw Me Out" also clocks in at 6:06. Granted, the Half Racks re-recorded the song and cut out some of the end, but the point is, it started out as a 6 minute song. There's nothing that says you can't edit it down after the competition if you like.

As for the six minute challenge; yowch. I think some good plot-lyric writing this week is gonna be key so listeners don't walk away after the 23rd guitar solo :-p

See, even Glenn, who's made 1000+ songs or something, only has a few he can mention, which is a pretty low percentage. And one of them was for Pedal Fight. I did an 8 minute song for the Pedal Fight, too, but I'm pretty sure that kind of wankery will not cut it in the semifinal round of Nur Ein II. Then again...

Anyway, back to composing our masterpiece...

Wow, I am surprised by the complaints about this. As a musician you should be thrilled at the chance to show off your musical acumen. Having 6 minutes to your disposal and a captive audience, this is your chance to do a song with ...i don't know, perhaps an intro, a guitar solo, and a big finish. You can play with crescendos and clearmountain pauses and all sorts of things. So you only have six days in which to do it. It's the nature of the game. Put away your normal disposition to make a 3 minute song that will be immediately palatable to the short-attention span laden songfighter and stretch and embrace the possibilities. This should be fun.

It's not like we're asking for an album in a day? an album in a weekend? 14 songs in 28 days? etc.

A little late to say, but Frankie should have taken this fight by storm and then chased Merisan round a lighthouse on a unicorn for a good hour to teach 'em their place.

Seriously not only is this the loveliest FBF song I have heard for ages (and he only writes lovely songs) it is also one of the most beautiful songs I have heard for a good while. Anyone who says it is cheesy has no soul and should go to soul-growing-school.

I also prefered A-Bob to Merisan who would have taken a solid bronze in my non-travesty version of the outcome of round 5.

Come on judges, sort it out. or no unicorns for you. this would never have happened on my watch.

PPS Reviews:

Abom: Nice work on the lyrics, though the delivery of the vocals doesn't always totally work for me. I like the background vox. This sounds to me like it's missing bass and drums, especially when the dual lead guitars are going. Nice lead guitar riffing, though. Feels a little short, like it's missing a section or something.

BLT: I like this song quite a bit, it's got charm. I feel like something's off about the vocals, though. I think I would have preferred just one lead vocal track, rather than a cloud of tracks. This one also feels like it should have drums and bass kick in at some point.

BoRe: I really enjoyed this song, and I think it's one of my favorites of yours from Nur Ein II. Your lyrics are consistently the most inventive, and I think they're very coherent in this tune. Good job on the instrumentation, bringing in the held out chords on the electric later on. For a keyboard player, you're a pretty darn good guitar player.

FBF: I'm having a hard time with that lead guitar track, which I don't think the song really needs at all, especially with that effect on it. I know you had very little time to work on this, but it would've been great to hear some more vocal layers, too. Anyway, minor quibbles aside, it's a solid song, and the "Loving you every day" hook is real good.

Puce: When I started listening to this I thought "Shit, I didn't even know he had an acoustic guitar, let alone knew how to finger pick so well." That part is super pretty. At this point I figured that you and Frankie and Plat would be going on. Anyway, nice song, though it feels to me like it's missing drums and bass in the chorus. In spite of your self-proclaimed writer's block, I think your lyrics are pretty good. I think this is a little too sparse for me, though, like some melodic guitar lines in there somewhere would flesh it out more.

Tex: This is definitely my favorite song of yours from this Nur Ein (along with the one about the woman who gets eaten by the crocodile). The lyrics are funny, and the whole thing is just fun. I like the backing vox.

Anyway, like I said before, good job everybody.

j$, you are my hero. Un-PC as it is to say, I really love the song and was disappointed to get complaints about the lyric (kept in the singular just for you!). They were almost effortless to write and that almost never happens. Even if this is my last week at Nur Ein (when have you known me to write a song over four minutes, let alone six?), the whole venture will have been worth it for this song alone and I'm really pleased you like it. (When I eventually post it on somesongs, be sure to cut and paste your second paragraph above--I'd like to see it on a regular basis!)

BTW, I understand why people don't like the lead guitar track, but I think it would be missing something without it. I just needed more time to make it better and I didn't have it.

Word. I totally heard it working if it was gelled in the mix more. But I heard what you were going for, so it worked for me. But yeah, more time is the golden ticket.
