Dublin Duck Dispensary
I'm weirdly fond of the Fruityloops/chimes combo you have going there. The vocals are kind of hard to make out and off-time, though. Is that a Casio I hear doing the "trumpet"? Pretty nice overall, with some more work it could be very good.

Embers Of Autumn
Nice acoustic sound, yo. I'm also fond of the call-and-response vocals, though the vocal performance itself sounds a little pained at times.

Flvxxvm Florvm feat. Jolly Roger
I'm liking the first minute of this so far - I really like the guitar sound you've got going on, plus - as I've discovered over the last couple of weeks - JR's a pretty awesome drummer. The gain on the vocals can probably be dropped, but overall this is a pretty cool track. Nice solo! Trek samples also a winner.

Gurdonark
Not too sure what to make of this,to be honest with you. It's interesting to hear your experiments with songwriting, though, because you had a different style to begin with.

KB Bren
Very nicely produced, excellent guitar sound. Reminds me a little of Tom Petty. A nice solid entry.

Kraziez
The backing is something I'd love to be let loose on for some insane audio destruction, but the vocals throw me entirely. It's also pretty hard to listen to for the same reasons that I like it. Kinda like Aphex Twin in that respect.

Melvin
I gave your track a cursory listen before, so this is my second listen - First time around it struck me as not as strong as your previous entries. I'm not fond of the heavy kick drum in the first minute, though once the rest of the band kicks in it sounds pretty cool in a Strokesy way. I'm kind of the opposite of JR's review on this one - this one is kind of a let down to me. Perhaps Take950 is doomed to cite "artistic differences" one day. xD Anyhow, the "oohs" and chorus are, as usual, soaring and catchy, but just not as good as you have been.

Pirate Bingo Steakhouse
Interesting lyrically, but otherwise it's a bit hard to listen to - Monkey Island wins everything, though.

State Shirt
Hoshit!

Take950
Me and JR, we're a team! I had fun with this - I'm not the most accomplished metaller, so it was fun to try something different. It's amazing the difference the drums made. As for the vocals, metal is DEFINITELY not where I lie normally, so the only way is up from there.

Wages
I quite like this. I like the kind of "accidental" feel of the little speech/ambient noise segment, though your voice really reminds me of someone and it's bugging me.

Weakest Suit
Nice entry, pleasant enough to listen to. Well recorded, I like the subtle backing vox.

The White Hat
I love complex 3/4 guitar. Dunno why, but it really calls to me. Really nice guitar sound, too. Nice lyrics, too. A song about OCD could be done badly, but this is very tasteful and clever. The banjo is mixed too high and too mid-rangey, for me. Make it more hig-frequency and lower the volume on it some. Otherwise, this is a pretty dang cool entry.

William Parsons Project
Yeah, lose the falsetto. Other than that, this is pretty awesome in an almost Hawkwind way.

WreckdoM
Damn, I love you guys. Never stop. Also never take the medication.

Zipline
SF needs more prog. This s a shining example. Vocals could use mixing better. That is all.

Vote? Hmm. State Shirt's is the best metal, bt I'm not all that fond of death metal, so that's a maybe. White Hat, Flxx and Zipline also potentials.

I refuse to run through the whole fight and force myself to say something, anything, about every song. I'll just point out stuff I like, or otherwise have something real to say.

I'm voting for the William Parsons Project. They keyboards, the synth and the electric piano, are what carry it. The whole recording is very chaotic, with voices and various instruments just sort of popping backward and forward and out the mix at random times. Some of the guitar sounds like when you plug a guitar straight into a 1989 Tascam cassette 4-track with no "direct box" or anything, just a flanger. That is, it sounds "ghetto", which rocks. The vocals range from cartoony to glam-tastic. God, this makes me horny.

Zipline would have got my vote based on overall progness, except I just couldn't get into the vocals. I would definitely enjoy seeing you guys play live.

I was also tempted to vote for my own entry, not for me but for the drums. All of you who are giving it semi-good reviews, would be dissing it if you had to hear it with General MIDI drums programmed by me. Trust me.

Well, the Pirate Bingo Steakhouse certainly confuzzled me. Wasn't exactly my favorite, but it was interesting enough to get me to listen to it a second time. Both state shirt and wreckdom made my face get splinters this week. However, WreckdoM's entry has, somehow or another, been playing in my head repeatedly for the past couple of days. Since that rarely happens, my vote goes to WreckdoM.

BRING IT! Best of luck bro. My vote this week went to White Hat. White Hat's is in my current playlist rotation. Very close second was state shirt. Great fight guys.

what the old guy thinks:

Dublin Duck Dispensary: not doing it for me. too soundcard-MIDI
in the instrumentals, and when the vocals come in, they're off beat
from the music. on the "drum" track, umm, listen to some songs and
figure out what's going on in the drum parts.

Embers of Autumn: second vocalist is under pitch most of the way
through, first vocalist is over and under. the lyric didn't really
catch my attention, i got to the end and, uhh, missed it.

Flvxxum Florvm: drums sound really good, is that you JR? good
guitar work. i'd have taken out less of the top and bottom on the
vocal track. maybe a keeper if this turns out to be a particularly
weak fight...

Gurdonark: interesting sounds at the start, but when the rest of
the song comes in, it's too soundcard-MIDI for me.

KB Bren: nice sound on the intro, nice dynamic change going into the
vocal part. the doubled vocals miss each other, probably don't help
the song overall. main singer, nice voice. yeah, i think a mixed-low
organ or something would have been a better way to build up the
dynamics than doubling the vocals. mix seems pretty much all down
the center; if you have two guitars going on there, panning them out
to the sides might have been a better choice (and if you don't, recording
a second guitar and panning them might have been...). or even pan the
bass and 12-string out from each other. keeper.

Kraziez: not my thing, so not a lot to say... at least you seem to
understand what "drums" do in a song...

Melvin: okay, I guess I hoped for something more. vocals are good,
as always, good production. keeper

Pirate Bingo Steakhouse: if you could get those synvox to go to a
beat, this would be interesting (probably do-able if you edit the
track word-by-word after recording?).

State Shirt: not my thing, not much i can say about this...

Take 950: wish it was tighter rhythmically... the vocals just seem
to float ahead of and behind the beat. the track rocks, the song doesn't.

Wages: unless this track gets a lot louder, levels are way too low..
i guess i've grown acustomed to your vocals, you can do that pitchy thing
and have it sound emotional rather than bad... i've noticed since our first
GU track that your chord patterns are becoming more and more "normal," is
that intentional? keeper

Weakest Suit: instruments and voice are reasonably in tune; in this fight,
that's worth several bonus points right there. i think you could have
gotten away with panning that first guitar to the side, which would have
been interesting when the second one comes in (panned to the other side).
vocals maybe need to come up a bit when the additional instruments come
in. keeper

White Hat: nice sound on guitar and voice... some interesting chord stuff
happening in there too. not sure the banjo helps, maybe if you'd used it
it to widen the stereo field of the song, open things up. keeper

William Parsons Project: i think singing in falsetto kinda sucked the
feeling out of the vocal... i'd like to hear what bowie would do with
this. "inner sulu," nice. sounds like you've got about six voices
singing sloppy variations on the same melody, and that's probably about
four voices too many. lead guitar bit at 2:25 does not make the song
better

Wreckdom: bordering on "not my thing," but you guys are really good at
keeping it interesting for everybody. keeper

Zipline: synth bit on the intro doesn't seem like it quite fits... i'd
probably have just left off everything before :35, where the f/p guitar
starts up. vocals are lost in the instruments when they finally come in;
i think you could get away with singing a bit off-key if the lyrics are
interesting and understandable... more high-mids and create a little
sonic pocket for the voice between the guitars. i like the way the two
guitars play off each other, but i'm a words person and i'm not getting
them at all...

vote: KB Bren, lyrics give you the edge over White Hat. honorable mention
to wages for a well written song, we shoulda gawk'd this one, i was just
very busy that week...

I'm not sure what I did wrong with the levels. At home it seems to have the same levels as the other guy'n'guitar tracks I've done. Hmmm..

I could see how my chord patterns are evolving. I'm focusing more on melody and less on guitar whereas months ago I was doing the opposite. I think on my "Thank God For Memphis" I've found a good balance of the emotion/pitch problem, decent melody, and guitar work.

Another possible ball in play here is that I will go a period of time without playing anything (like I did recently for a couple of weeks), then I did an AAW (did a lot of experimenting <a href="http://www.songfight.net/forums/viewtop ... 8">here</a>; if you haven't listened it yet, I can't recommend it enough, and I'm really keen on track 7 ;)), "So Weird" with you, a cover of Jolly Roger's "Glutton", and Velvet Underground's "Rock'n'Roll" which gave me some new perspective. See, I usually spend almost no time learning anything new, therefore when I do, my "inspiration" and "influences" come in waves. Does anyone else feel this way? In fact... answer this in the QoTD posted here:
http://www.songfight.net/forums/viewtop ... 2082#92082

Hopefully they are better waves this time then the last string of SF entries. I especially feel my tempo is getting a lot better.

Or, you could just call this my "blue" period. :)

Yes, leftover from "Jesus on the Intercom" it seemed to fit this song, adds to the mystery of what its all about, kinda, I thought.

State Shirt: It is clear to me that you eat souls and shit metal. I dunno how a part can be too long in a two minute song, but the last bit before the outtro dragged for me.

Dublin god-awful-techno Dispensary: My joke on your name is your review.

Embers of Autumn: I prayed that earnest power ballads died with the '90's, but look at us now - all up in emo rock's acoustic asshole like the shriveled cock of a gay emo person having anal sex with a likeminded individual.

Flvxxvm Florvm feat Songfight's other Flvxxvm Florvm: I dunno how a two-man band can't keep a simple beat with one another, but there it is. I don't hate this song, tho. It's got a nice old Meatpuppets vibe goin' on and I'm a sucker for shitmic vocals. "You're gonna be my flav?" Well, you, sir, can be my Flavah Flav. BOYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I quit listening at 2:22.

Gurdonark: 1:13 tunes with ludicrous lyrics work for Magnetic Fields, whom you are not. I like the way this song ends. Second listen: If the lyrics weren't totally trite, I'd buy into this.

Numbers: Yep, those are some chords. Omg more chords. Your voice is aight, the lyrics don't make me reach for the knife, but the song structure is meandering at best. Simplify.

KRAZEIZ: I hated it even before it started playing. And then I laughed a little. Stay in character, dude. Do multiple vocal takes, break them up so you can really nail each line. This has potential. Eh, the music doesn't survive the lack of vocals. This sounds like it'd be pretty damned fun live.

Melvin: I don't think the monotone vox do it here. The "enough" line is funny.

Pirate Bingo Shithouse: This sucks wet ass.

Take 950: Prong riffs! THE CUT IS GOOD ENOUGH!!!! This also sucks. Wait, that might be more of a Pantera riff than a Prong riff. Hmmmmm..

Waje's: Apparently your "blue" period involves recording inaudible songs.

Weakest Suit: Losing interest in G&G chordfests here. Nothing interesting, low melodic content, dumb lyrics. Oop, a paint-by-numbers americana indie tune sprang to life. Well this isn't terrible any more, I guess. I think with a good mix and some attention to the decent bits of this tune, it could have been interesting, but the lack of interest from the singer and meandering arrangement = snooze.

THE WHITE HAT: !!!!! Hello captain awesomeness. Does she really "preform" rituals? :D As usual, you can play guitar like a motherfucker. This is pretty sweet but kinda unfocused. Instrumentation is sweet. "Anomoly" is a really tough word to work into a lyrical flow, I guess.

William Parsons: People liked this mess? Painful.

Wreckdom: Have Wreckdom rendered Klownhole passe'? More at 11.

Zipline: Splishy cymbals. The YYZ riff. What we have here, folks, are collegiate Rush fans. CHRIST that's some terrible singing.

Don't be hatin!
We noticed the timing problems early on, and discussed it - Jeff's computer has an unfortunate problem of recording slightly off the click track therefore leaving the recorded track slightly off beat in some sections - I recorded the first half of the song with the messed up click track until that weak drum solo I do - after that I tried to go without the click track, because at that point in time, the guitar was completely offset from the click track. At least you didn't notice any timing issues in the Take950 song - I drummed in that one as well, and I'm thankful we had no computer issues for that one.

here is an audible version of wages' tune, for real this time.

http://b-side.org/music/mp3/wages_anomaly.mp3

wages, you gotta get a little more serious than this. there's no excuse for not tracking this tune. you shouldn't be singing and playing at the same time, and the little picked bit at the end is terrible played naked. this would have been one of the better tunes in the fight if you had spent 30 minutes on it.

Actually, I did spend 30 minutes on it! I should have spent <i>another</i> 30 minutes. j/k! Real cope out: I was hoping to collab on this with someone, but no one bite when I posted a thread for it. But now I am encouraged to "finish" this track. I'll post here and there if I do it. But IF anyone wants to help with the music.... :)

Anomaly REVIEWS:

<u><b>Dublin Duck Dispensary :</b></u>
Didn't really like this one too much. Bells were off with the music and the melody of vocals didn't fit really in my opinion. I think if you worked a little longer it would have sounded like a Mum song. I like them.

<u><b>Embers of Autumn :</b></u>
Couldn't really dig this one. Sounded like a song somebody would sing at an 8th Grade Talent show. I mean, the music was good, you didn't fuck up, but the vocals were a little uneasy.

<u><b>Flvxxvm Florvm featuring Jolly Roger :</b></u>
music was alright, had kind of an Alice and Chains feel. I didn't like the vocals that much... drum solo was unexpected but i liked how the clip halfway through went back into the track. good transition.

<u><b>Gurdonark :</b></u>
Did not like this one. The end was kind of nice, that's the only part i really enjoyed.

<u><b>KB Bren :</b></u>
Vocals were not bad. Music kind of got repetitive in my opinion but it had a nice early 90's feel. Almost like a Gin blossoms song or something. Didn't hate it!

<u><b>Melvin :</b></u>
This one is the best I've heard so far (going in order of the list) You did a good job recording, quality wise. I thought the chorus was really catchy with those "oohs" Nothing i would really listen to on a constant basis but their was definitely something there.

<u><b>Pirate Bingo Steakhouse :</b></u>
this is what robots listen to, and then they turn it off cause they don't like it.

<u><b>State Shirt :</b></u>
sounded nice. i liked the intro, it hit pretty hard but in my opinion i think some blast beats would have made the song even more brutal. but then again i think all songs should have more blast beats. good shit though, only thing i didn't like was the distortion on the vocals, but thats just cause I'm picky.

<u><b>Take950 :</b></u>
Really didn't like this song at all. Made me get all upset. Guitar work was weak and the vocals didn't do much.

<u><b>The Kraziez :</b></u>
not really my favorite type of music. the drums were good but that's all i really enjoyed.

<u><b>The Weakest Suit :</b></u>
Kind of bored me a little. I mean, your vocals aren't bad, and the music was good. I was just looking for a good hook but i couldn't find one.

<u><b>The White Hat :</b></u>
you kind of sounded like damien rice when you said "one by one" that was pretty cool. I liked the banjo, and your falsetto is pretty good too.

<u><b>Wages :</b></u>
couldn't get through this one.

<u><b>William Parsons Project :</b></u>
music was alright i guess. i didn't like the singing, kinda bugged me. solo was decent at the end.

<u><b>WreckdoM :</b></u>
seriously, what the fuck?

<u><b>Zipline :</b></u>
intro reminded me of YYZ from Rush. You got a good style. I definitely see the Rush, Yes influence. I like the techy music but not the vocals as much. Best music that i heard though out of everyone, by far.
