Hey Folks,
Did you know Songfight has its own chat room?
http://songfight.net/chat
I was going to spend the afternoon in the old Chatjunkies room, but I'm going to leave both open and see what happens. Stop by and say hello.

You know, I check this thing every afternoon, and there is NEVER anyone there. I guess songfighters just aren't big chatters.

Clearly. If IRC wasn't working out, what made you think that an annoying soundy advertisey Flash-based thing would?

I like chatting, but I don't like a thousand ads on my screen at once. I guess I prefer the forum.

Uh... we're all in the Googlechat dudes. I thought partychat was the new black. Or the old paisley. Or something.

fluffy, I had no problem with the irc. I don't know what you are talking about it not working. It had a long period of high activity, and had the benefit of being accessible from numerous different platforms. In fact, I could participate from my phone. It was going through a natural cycle of inactivity fora while, but that's not really a problem in my opinion. The only problem with irc is is that it's not the new anything. JB likes these new-fangled gizmos
anti-m, google is the new AOL.

What I meant was that IRC is great and open and etc. for all the reasons you stated BUT getting people to stick around there was tough. It's got a major network effect. When people see something new they're all HEY LETS DO THIS THING and then people get all like *yawn* and then people stop bothering etc.

What I love about google chat:
1. I can't fucking remember how to start it up. Not google chat, just the chatroom part.
2. I can go on the web and get records of every conversation that has ever gone down in there. Even ones that I wasn't a party to. There goes "what is said in the chat room stays in the chat room". You don't believe me. Here. I will quote one. You can see on the top line that I wasn't even there:
partychat6 wrote:

2:59 PM partychat6: ["erik"] hey ken
["glenncase"] heh
3:00 PM ["[Anti-m]"] I actually prefer getting zee work out of the way early in the day...
["[Anti-m]"] So female stripper is right out.
["[Anti-m]"] Unless I worked the creepy day shift.
So now you know. I know what you have been saying about me in there. Well I could, anyway. As it is, I choose not to look. I took the above snippet at random. But check out the date. This stuff doesn't expire! Homeland security must love it.
3. you can be invisible. anyone could be lurking. any time. see #2.

See, I LIKE that I can be kept appraised of what's happening in the Googlechat when I'm not there! You can actually turn off the "send me transcripts of stuff" feature if it bugs you. Also, if you want to say something particularly scandalous / inflammatory you can opt to say it "off the record."
I opt to speak on the record because
1. I don't say mean stuff about people there (and I haven't honestly found that anyone is inclined to mean-ness there)
2. I obviously don't care who knows that I will never make it in a career as a stripper. (For a multitude of reasons which include the hours of operation.)
But whatevs. I'm sure the IRC is delightful too. I just keep hearing rumors of its non-functionality / unpopulated nature, so I've been defaulting to the Goog.
You should stop in and say hello!

Hey, I was weaned on IRC! IRC is a friend of mine!
The problem with all our chatroom efforts so far is that either they're hideous or you have to go out of your way to use them. I know, I know, it's nice to have a secret hideyhole to go pal around with your co-conspirators. But if you wanna do that you can go make your own. I don't think that this community is a place where using technological hurdles to keep the riffraff out is appropriate, for the main stream of users of the forums. I'd like to have the genius musicians who can't be bothered to figure out IRC or the Google Partychat to be able to participate.
So therefore my goal, really, has been to find a chatroom that is zero effort to join. There is a chat app that apparently will let us sign on via the forums, which integrates into PHPBB:
http://www.php121.com/
That's probably going to be as zero-effort as I can make it; well, zero-effort to use, not for me to set up. It's $15 for the ad-free version, which is within my songfight budget.

I guess for chatroom efforts, that's next on my list.

Where the hell IS the Google chat, anyway? I didn't even know it existed. Is it a Jabber thing?

We are currently testing Meebo, which is dead simple to use and has some good features. It has an annoying word censor, but you can say wikipedia all day long if you want.
Try it please:

You know what I miss? The old IRC channel days. Most of the Songfighters hung around there all the time (Blue, Ken, Jack, Fluffy, Obscurity, DrewTetz, Erik, Hoblit, Yook, Mo, Marcus, Soda, Spud, JB, etc.), a lot of great collabs were born, and I think chatting (and in some cases, chatting often) in real-time outside of the board helped reduce rancor on the board, because we knew each other that much better.
Is there currently a working Songfight chat venue? If so, where is it? If not, would anyone be interesting in resurrecting the old IRC channel?
If I recall correctly, the old Songfight chat room was called #Songfight! (exclamation point mandatory), and it was located in the Chatjunkies server. Correct me if I'm wrong, please. I just joined this room, and am currently the only user in it. I'll be hanging out there pretty much all day if anyone else wants to try to get this off the ground again.

Hm. I haven't used mIRC in a while.
You're going to have to add Chatjunkies to your list manually for the first time. Once you add it, it should be there permanently.
this site has the info you're looking for, but it's a little cluttered. Basically, you just need to click on the "Add" button on the top right of the first options window. Type "Chatjunkies" the top two fields (if you want, you can type something more descriptive in the top field), port number 6667. No group, no password.
Let me know if that doesn't work.

yeah I know how to add new servers but there is an address needed for it to point to.
Like irc.dalnet.net
I tried irc.chatjunkies.net but that wasn't the right one.

There's a web-based chat thing too but I've never seen anyone actually use it, so I've added the IRC channel to my list of automatically joined ones. Consequently, I'll be there around the clock (or at least my IRC client will be).
