Talk to me when they're conjoined twins. Then the boggling shall begin.

I hear you bro - cojoined lesbian twin sex needs a whole thread of its own.

I think I'd like to do this. I'm away from home at the moment, so my song list will be posted in a couple days.

you don't need some big contest with rules to give the gift of music. you just need to be motivated to do so.
Ouch. It's true that there is often some bad feelings in the GoM. Trying to gather a large group of musicians in one big effort can do that sometimes. It's a holiday celebration, a Secret Santa for Songfight, and that's why I do it. And I feel like the end often justifies the means.

I think I would like to do this. It's been a while. My only (minor) gripe is that it seems to be a platform for people to post their four most obscure look-how-hip-I-am favorite tracks and that sometimes makes it difficult and, frankly, less fun for me.
I hear what you're saying, all one can do is hope that the people in the GoM use some considerate judgment when choosing their 4 songs. If you think the song is obscure, so will the giftgiver. Don't make it a chore for the person giving you a gift.
Billy's Little Trip wrote:
Also, what's so great about covering a label bands music? Wouldn't it be better to cover a song by the SF member that you get matched up with?
1) Back when the GoM was started, SF was doing a lot more "Original Flavor" coverfights, which were somewhat like the idea you purposed.
2) There's no requirement on the list, it just says 4 favorite songs.
3) Using label bands can be easier because the sheet music/tablature is out there already.

Ooh, here's another idea for THE FUTURE. What if everyone chose four songs they don't particularly like and the coverer's job was to improve it in such a way that would make the cover-chooser happy? Less pressure I think than covering someone's favorite song by their favorite artist. I'm just full of mediocre ideas.
That really is a great idea, you should spearhead it someday. I was kind of thinking the same thing about getting my favorite songs covered. I personally feel that my favorite songs are perfect as they are. <<
edit - referring to my historically perfect favorite songs by other bands, not my songs. My songs can always be improved upon.
By the way, whom ever gets me, don't expect an exact copy....in fact, expect it to be a BLT song with your favorite bands chords and lyrics, lol.

Covering commercial music this way has been really fun for me.
It's Christmas, god damn it! There are always egos, hurt feelings, disappointments, and burnt cookies. But somehow boxing day rolls around and hey, that was fun in a weird "I hate my family" sort of way.

If this were reliably the case, I'd actually be able to enter some of the various coverfights around here (including GoM), but it's not. I think it ties in to the issue of people choosing obscure songs, but you'd be surprised how hard it is sometimes to scare up a tab/score/midifile/whatever of some well-known stuff. I know there are quite a few well-known songs that I've wanted to cover in the past but have been unable to find out how to play them.

Hey Nigel, I just saw a band on SNL last night called Spoon. They're pretty good. Piano, horns, drums, guitars, Billy Joel sounding voice kind of.

Links to follow, but I've decided on these:
Stay - Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs
Motorcrash - The Sugarcubes
Def Con One - Pop Will Eat Itself
Restless Legs - Half Man Half Biscuit
Lyrics to all four tracks can be found here...
spOOnbase
(Yeah Chris, I've got some of their stuff, discovered them myself not too long back and yeah they're pretty good... in fact better than your average spOOn

Ok, so I've talked it all over with Phil, and we really do enjoy covering songs and giving gifts. We've decided to be in after all.
Rinkydink wrote:Oh no you don't!!!!, you made an excellent gift for me last year so yer not allowed to bow out this year (i'm hoping you's cover one of mine again)so please reconsider your decision.
See, this really is the best part of GOM, knowing that your giftee enjoyed the song you gave them. I'm glad you still like the cover a year later.
Niveous wrote:
Okay Hell Yeahs,
Every year so far, you have gotten screwed in some way while putting up an awesome tune. And every year I feel horrible about this. So, if you guys walk away from GoM, I'll completely understand.
But.... I won't let you go without making an offer.
If you stay, I will hand pick your giftgiver (not at random).
And if you still get stiffed, I will personally make it up to you by covering a whole album's worth of Hell Yeahs' songs (min. 10 songs).
That's my offer.
That's a great offer Niv! If you really want to do that, it's up to you, but we certainly aren't demanding any sort of special treatment. I say let the chips fall where they may. I've had a change of heart and really do feel that it is great to give, and kind of ok not to receive!
jimtyrrell wrote:Plus, as an added bonus, you get a GOM 2007 Pre-gift just for stopping by! It's a cover of my choosing, admittedly, but given last year's list, I hope you find it suitable.
Half A Person (Smiths cover)
Wow Jim! Your cover of a great song by my all time favorite band is fantastic! You have certainly given Johnny Marr a run for his money, your guitars are great, and you're vocals are spot on. Thank you sooo much for going above and beyond! See, songfighters really do end up coming through for us after all!
jack wrote:and heather, if i were you, there's no way i would touch this. as long as i've been around here (eons!), nobody has gotten screwed worse than you and phil with this.
Yeah, you're right, by saying we're in, we
are setting ourselves up for disappointment, but that's ok. We do so enjoy covering songs and giving gifts. I think that if we find ourselves screwed again,
we'll just cover one of our chosen songs!
frankie big face wrote:Didn't a whole bunch of people do like a million covers of Hell Yeahs songs as part of a Hxaro LoveFest? I know it's not the same thing, but I mean, it's not like the Redmons didn't get a whole bunch of SongLove not too long ago. Not making excuses for people who fold on GoM, just saying...
This is true Frankie, we were so lucky to have a huge group of dedicated and talented songfighters cover Hell Yeahs and Abominominous songs back in April. When Phil and I listened to them, I had tears of joy in my eyes. It was the best gift ever. By no means was I degrading the gifts that were so generously given for the Phil Redmon Lovefest. GOM has been a bitter sweet experience for us and it is it's own entity.
So all that being quoted and said, The Hell Yeahs are indeed in. Here are our choices, one from each decade:
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
Take On Me - Ah Ha
Black - Pearl Jam
Boys in the Band - The Libertines
