Ouch. It's true that there is often some bad feelings in the GoM. Trying to gather a large group of musicians in one big effort can do that sometimes. It's a holiday celebration, a Secret Santa for Songfight, and that's why I do it. you don't need some big contest with rules to give the gift of music. you just need to be motivated to do so.
I hear what you're saying, all one can do is hope that the people in the GoM use some considerate judgment when choosing their 4 songs. If you think the song is obscure, so will the giftgiver. That really is a great idea, you should spearhead it someday. I was kind of thinking the same thing about getting my favorite songs covered. I personally feel that my favorite songs are perfect as they are. << edit - referring to my historically perfect favorite songs by other bands, not my songs. If this were reliably the case, I'd actually be able to enter some of the various coverfights around here (including GoM), but it's not. I think it ties in to the issue of people choosing obscure songs, but you'd be surprised how hard it is sometimes to scare up a tab/score/midifile/whatever of some well-known stuff. Yeah, you're right, by saying we're in, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment, but that's ok. We do so enjoy covering songs and giving gifts. This is true Frankie, we were so lucky to have a huge group of dedicated and talented songfighters cover Hell Yeahs and Abominominous songs back in April. When Phil and I listened to them, I had tears of joy in my eyes. It was the best gift ever. By no means was I degrading the gifts that were so generously given for the Phil Redmon Lovefest.
