Glenn is definitely one of the nicest guys I have ever had the privilege to talk to.

I often wonder if threads exist where I am talked about a lot and I am completely oblivious...AND HERE IT IS! (until now at least)

Heh! It's actually on Rubber Soul, so you wouldn't have to worry about being seen in public with one of my favorite albums anyway.

The lyrics to "Run For Your Life" are a little on the dark and twisted side, which is actually why I thought it would be a perfect match for you.

On the interjecting my opinion in a discussion that didn't have much to do with me front, I'll say this about the Glenn / Lord of Oats discussion, I can kind of see both sides of it. Whenever I see one of these threads that people start discussing "I would love to hear X cover Y", I quickly scan the thread to see if my name is even remotely discussed. And I do this knowing very well that based upon my SongFight! resume, there's no logical reason I should expect anyone here to include me in a list unless I'm signing up to be in it. And yet I do. And that's pretty much what Lord of Oats was doing, although his official resume (# of SongFight! entries), along with many other people who were not mentioned, is more impressive than mine. Again, that's what I do. YMMV.

Then there is Glenn's perspective, he presents a simple list of what he would like to hear based upon his personal tastes and what he envisions they might turn out like. Lord of Oats expressed his displeasure of being left off of the list. The issue is that Lord of Oats objection is kind of like a third cousin objecting to not being on the family Christmas gift exchange when hardly anyone of the family knows who he is or that he wanted to be included on the list in the first place. This is just an analogy and not a commentary on Lord of Oats place in the community, so spare me the hate mail. At any rate, if I had to choose a side, this is the one I would go with. And Glenn's comment about "Hey X SongFighter, what Y song would you think I could do well?" is probably the way that Lord of Oats should have presented his point. But it's all good and a learning opportunity for everyone, or so says Dan-O the great mediator of logic and reason. (Hey, people can change)

Based on the four songs under your name in the archives, and your Beatles cover from Lennonfight, I do believe that I have come up with a song that I imagine would fit nicely:

Dan-O from Five-O - I Me Mine

The reason: You sound like you have the guitar chops to pull off some good Harrison-esque moments, and I'd like to hear how you would tackle those bad-ass dynamic switches that exist in the original. (You've got the blues angle covered nicely, as "Can't Take Our Love Away" demonstrates.)

(Note: "I'm Warning You" is a pretty cool song.)

I've got an unfinished cover of "Cold Turkey" that I abandoned for the cover of "Love" that Erin helped me finish. I don't think I can do the vox for "Cold Turkey" but maybe somebody else would want to do them? Or if Glenn picked another song he thought I should cover (possibly with Erin) I might look into it.

Doh! I think I got my this thread mixed up with the Lennon thread in my wobbly brain. Anyway, I'll talk to Erin and see what she thinks about doing that song. We're almost ready to start doing music again after Nur Ein burnout and maybe a cover would be a good way to get back into things.

Thank you, Glenn. Luckily, I happen to have Rubber Soul. I somehow never realized how awesome this song was, prior to your recommendation. I have begun studying the piece, and am weighing my options for different ways to interpret the song. But I accept the challenge. This will be some work, but it ought to be rewarding, and build valuable skills. And I would not back out after causing such a commotion (however unintentional that was). In any case, this will probably take a long time to finish, and then not be very good. But we'll see.

As far as a "about a dozen" songs versus four songs, if you were trying to point out the discrepancy, I was including my current entry and a couple of collabs, as well as the "related competitions," SUK and 55-Minute Frenzy, and my own silly little sidefight. I'm not saying you have to seek out and listen to everything else, since you've already made a decision, and four is probably all the me you'd want to listen to in one sitting, but I would not say that my SF songs are necessarily my best songs. But thanks for taking the time to listen, either way.

On the topic of Glenn dominating this thread, I think I'm pretty satisfied with his selection, so whatever. I was thinking about posting my own suggestions, but I still don't have any I feel totally firm about. If anyone specific asks me for an idea, I'll put some thought into it and get back to you. Also, if anyone else has ideas for me, I can never have too much to work on. So there's an open invitation either way.

Lord of Oats: Glenn and I have known each other, mostly in a fond sense, for about 4 years. (via the internet, never met each other) We've collaborated on a few songs, spent countless hours chatting on IRC, and he's listed one of my songs in one of his (many) 'best of' lists. And yet, he never included me in his Beatles cover list. Did I get all offended? No. Put things in perspective here, dude. I'm glad y'all worked it out in the end, but the initial argument was kind of embarrassing and hard to read, frankly.

I felt the same way when Octothorpe signed up for Cover Fight No. 1. I immediately figured out that we were in way over our heads. We were assigned Duboce Triangle, and we picked <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/tracks_f ... .mp3">this song</a> as having some potential for our treatment. Hardest thing I ever did in my life. However, also one of the most worthwhile. There is nothing that improves your songwriting skills (mine, anyway), than deconstructing someone else's stuff. We don't do a lot of covers, but every one is a really big learning experience. Especially covering other songfighters, where you usually can't look up charts or tabs. By the way, <a href="http://www.aaronondek.com/cover/CF00/Oc ... here</a>'s what we came up with. We ended up re-writing some lyrics and replacing the big space warp in the middle with a less atonal synth solo to bring it into the Octo genre. There are a few other differences as well.

Many years ago I started doing an ironic J-dance cover of A Day In The Life. It was terrible and soul-raping. It's probably a good thing I never finished it.
