To re-re-iterate, I think the diy ethic is a really interesting angle, and would make it palatable to a non-musician crowd. I don't want to see 'look how good we are at this music thing' particularly. There are too many good musicians here to make it into anything but a lo-fi internet woodstock diaries. I'd much rather see the community aspect, with the music as a pleasant background/side-effect.

I mean, when you think about it, short of sci-fi conventions and gay curising chatrooms, how many other sites filter real life to internet, and then back into real life again? We are using the internet in a very unique and admirable way, and that should be recorded. Now I'm off to download some clown porno

Absolutely. Although I was hoping to pre-cursor the whole SF Live thing, for a longer period, maybe 2005 SF Live is the way to go. You are right on the money. Just gonna have to really start in the new year to get this thing flying. If any of you have any questions that you think need answering by fighters, please lay them down here.

Thanks 1516. I think you would be an awesome interviewee. Also if there are any bits that you wouldn't like to have aired you can state that before signing a waver. As far as the camera and mic thing goes, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm as good as there, in my world. Also music would be an excellent asset cuz it'll segue the interviews with travel shots and vice-versa. I'm sure that was a forgone conclusion.

i think it's great that so many people want to chip in and be part of something like this. that said, the reality is that someONE needs to be the director, the creative vision behind writing, storyboarding, producing, maybe filming, etc. for the sake of argument, that seems to be tonetripper, so ultimately, it's really up to him as to how far this gets off the ground (or maybe someone who hasn't piped up yet).

my suggestion would be to open this up to anyone on songfight. make it american idol like, where people would submit a 2 minute video to TT or something like that. the truth (as painful as it is) is that not everyone here has a compelling story to tell, is interesting, is good in front of a camera, etc. ultimately, the director should decide which of our motley crew could present the best (and most interesting) package. i mean, here we have a college student who's forte is traditional irish music and punk rock (sober), we have a middle aged software developer dad who does showtunes with his daughter (jim), and we have a guy who does ska rock and works at a fish packing plant (leaf). yet, the common thread is songfight. each of these stories could be a compelling story within a story.

it's not that we are really that interesting individually. it's what brings us all together that makes it interesting.

It doesn't make a difference. Anyone can be followed. Why not you? You are making a concerted effort to be a part of the community and you are female.

And I agree, it's not about a diaried bad independent Woodstock. It's about the relationships and the characters (which I'm sure you'll all agree aren't in this place). I think with the proper execution it would work.

The music is a backbone to bigger things. The music could be worked on for the film while filming. I smell sidefights popping up.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Personally I would like to oversee it (Produce it with JB's permission). Possibly cut it, but my feeling is that with enough ideas generated in this thread that the project would eventually direct itself. Also, I think it's important to note that we as a motley crew are all self respecting artists in our own right, so I would love to hear more angles and yes you are right there will be key players. That is not to say that I wouldn't like to cover some others who are not key players to give the offset to the ones holding the floor. To be honest with you the more the merrier. I would like to interview you all, but that is unrealistic. So maybe a way to go is to come up with key questions for yourself in this thread and if you got the means then interview yourselves and send it in. This would help and credit WILL be given.

I also would like to open this up to someone state side who shares this vision, maybe Malachi Constant who could maybe direct state side stuff (especially in the south). Jack has made the suggestion of doing a little piece on the drive to an SF Live. I am encouraging this. These things don't need direction as they need motivation. The more the merrier in advancing the crews to our victims (joke). Also down under and over in merry old England. Anyone here who would like to take on the task of organizing that must have an understanding, knowledgeable of technicians, and aware of how to get the desired footage with the questions.

You are right Jack. It is about the coming together and a new era of communication with the ability to interface with others. Nice!!!

From the Canadian perspective, I would like to tackle people like Puce, Leaf, Hip Cola, and newcomer Deshead.

if a video camera is available, somebody should shoot footage of this upcoming accordian show in san francisco. maybe shoot some interviews with different folks there, both artists and attendees (sos groupies). might be useful in such a future project.

It's true, if people caught on that I was really Justin Timberlake there would be hell to pay.

Just wanted to say I think this is an incredible idea and I would consider it an honor to be involved. We could film ourselves with our cheapie camcorder or gladly welcome someone over to film us-creating a song, interviews, whatever. We'd also be willing to travel for a connected SF live event, which would likely be the first ever WreckdoM live performance.

Also, while your doing homework, check out Friends Forever a documentary about a two man band of the same name that takes several months off work each year to tour the country playing out of their van in areas where they are uninvited/unwanted. The music is crazy and the guys are crazier. It's very very funny.

Can I write the soundtrack?

I'm reminded of Trekkies the documentary about Star Trek fans. I think a successful SF doc would make people come away thinking that there's this whole big subculture going on around them that they knew nothing about, but that they wish they'd been involved in all along.

Perhaps rather than thinking feature documentary right off the bat, the better approach would be make something less ambitious, shorter, and peddle it around to gauge interest.

(not that you couldn't write a kickass soundtrack Jim...maybe you are talking about mood enhancing instrumental stuff, like film soundtrack...jarring chord here, dissonant noise there, nice happy resolve here....)...

so i thought of something i think would be really cool, after kind of scanning through this thread (it has grown too long too quickly for me to actually read the whole thing, so i apologise if somebody already suggested this!)

if it was possible, i think it would make an awesome movie if you were able to document one week's songfight in the making. that is, start the film with some kind of introduction to the SF community and concept... and then have people filming a number of different SFers as they go through the creative process that week -- coming up with the idea, writing, recording, submitting. it would take a bunch of cameras and loads of coordination and stuff, so probably wouldn't be very practicable, but i think it would make for some quality cinematography! like, showing the process each person/group goes through, and then showcasing the finished products. maybe interspersing some SFlive footage somewhere. i dunno.
