As if he isn't stressed enough with his work, I decided to mangle wrangle an Andre Was Here At Midnight tune. I liked it before SF! LIVE Tampa, loved it afterwards. Don't be mad at me Dre, I meant the best! “The Last Year” by Andre Was Here At Midnight

Chuck, you have made my day... actually my week.. actually my month.. something like that.
it's an honor that you have taken your time, and cover one of my songs.. a somewhat personal song non the less.
Glad you understood the sentiment under the song, and manage to cover it so freaking well.
you did the chorus just the way i always heard it in my head..
i showed it to a fellow coworker, and she digg your cover as well, so now you have 2 fans in orlando.
thanks again,
my heart was fill with joy.
Dre.

Dre - I'm very happy that you are pleased with it and it brought you a bit of happiness. That means a lot to me. I sense a big man-hug comin' up! Of course, it was a good tune to start with, so there.

First of all, nice cover Paco. It's cool that you left the song basically intact, and really only enhanced it. I strongly encourage everyone to A / B comparisons of these covers by listening to the original as well. Some are done the way Paco did it, others are complete reconstructions.
Secondly, K.A. here's a cover I did with some help of my friends. Real horns, fake drums. Yeah I need to get someone to fix that for me. Anyway, here it is Jim Tyrrell's "I don't want to be your friend".

you know... i actually tried to cover your Kim Deal, back like 2 years ago when we assigned each other songs to cover.
i probably made it halfway before realizing i just couldn't make it any better.
so the best way i can return a favor its with a MUSIC VIDEO for your Kim Deal ?
Enjoy the Madness.
Dre.
Holly shit, that was awesome dre. And I've never heard that Paco song, which is a fantastic song!
Funny trivia bit. The Kim Deal fight is what brought me to Song Fight! I was somehow linked here via mr. lostman. I'll be forever indebted to him.
....oh, and you guys can blame him.

Dre - I am totally honored! I love your videos as is, but making me the recipient of your art is just too cool. Thanks a ton, I love it! And to think that of the many good songs in that fight, you have 'lil 'ol me up there. Great work, and I love Godzilla very much as well, but maybe not as much as Kim. Fantastico!

King Arthur, are you still looking for Patrick Clayton's cover of "Adaptation" by Pray for Mojo for the Hxaro archive? I have that mp3 at home and can send it to you this weekend if so.
It looks like I have a copy of that one, I just haven't uploaded anything to the hxaro archive in a while. So I suppose this would be a good time to make an announcement:
If you're new around here, you may not have picked up on the fact that we have been abusing the term "hxaro" to mean "covers of songfight songs by other songfighters." So if I recorded my own version of one of Berkeley Social Scene's songs... that would be a hxaro. A gift from one songfighter to another. From the SF front page, you'll see that we have an entire "hxaro archive" of covers.
When I get some time (sometime soon), I'll do an update of the hxaro archive to add any new cover songs we've come up with, including songs from the last couple "original flava" coverfights. If you've done a cover of someone else's songfight song and it's not in the archive, let me know where I can get a copy and I'll include it. If you haven't done a cover of somebody else's songfight song... well, you should! Soon!
Thanks,
Charles (KA)
(by agreement with the fightmasters, we are ONLY including songs from songfight titles in the archive, so if you did a cover of a song from somebody's AAD or Nur Ein... for those, it's a "host yer own" deal - but for covers of submitted songfight songs, they will be hosted on the songfight site for posterity...)

I've saved off all the songs from the new original flava coverfight and I'm going to work on updating the hxaro archive (access from the main page).
If anyone has done any covers of other songfighters' songs that aren't in the hxaro archive yet, PM me with the location of the file (or email me a copy, charles16@cox.net) and I'll add those, too. Note that they DO have to be covers of something by a songfighter (not a Bowie song or something), but, as I recall, it's okay if it's a cover of something from an album a day, nur ein, or things other than SF titles.
If possible, if you can name the file: coverer_originalartist_songtitlespelledout.mp3, that will make it a little easier for me, but if it's already online as a link somewhere, just let me know who the coverer and original artist are, and the title of the song.
It looks like it may have actually been a few years since the hxaro archive was updated, so if you've done a cover (or been covered), please check the archive and if it's not there, let me know so we can get it in.
The Paco del Stinko Secret Santa covers have been added.

Hxaro archive has been updated, but I wound up having to rewrite the scripts that produce the .htm files, so there are probably some goofups here and there, feel free to post here if you find a problem with the archive or songs that should be added.

Awesome KA.
Now let's start throwing hxaros again.

Cool. So you generate the archive using scripts? Is there a master data file that the scripts work off of to generate the archive? If so, is that data file public? It'd be fun to import that data into the Jukebox.

The data is in an old (2008) access database that I ended up just turning into a pipe-delimited text file. You can get to it, if you want, at http://songfight.net/covers/hxari-pdv.txt - fields are:
- is this a cover of a songfight song (as opposed to an AAD song, nur ein or something)
- name of .mp3 file for cover version
- Original artist
- covering artist
- song title
- was the song a duck (0 votes)
- URL of original version (if it was from a fight)
- URL of songfight page for this title
- shorthand note to myself about what coverfight the song was from
Seems like maybe some of the nur ein things are now hosted by SF ??? - if so, I could add pointers to the originals of those, but I don't really want to start pointing to outside sites that may go away, so only if the songs are now hosted on SF.
So feel free to grab the datafile and include pointers to the cover versions in the jukebox - the actual songs are in one big directory with filenames like http://www.songfight.net/covers/songs/f ... 120mph.mp3 (coveringArtist_originalArtist_title, although none of the scripts depend parsing on the song filename).
Still some cleanup to be done (I see that "Variation" is misspelled on one of the records, so there are two different headers in the by-title list, that would be a data-cleanup thing). I'll try to keep that .txt data file up to date with whatever cleanup I do...

Wow, that's pretty cool. Thanks for all that info! I may poke around with parsing that file and thinking about the idea of expanding the Jukebox to be able to handle non-official-fight songs...

There is a nurein subdomain. Not sure what's being kept on it-- ask Niv.
The hosting account has virtually unlimited storage, so we could keep everything on there for my money (which it is, as a matter of fact ).

All of the Nur Ein songs.
PS- Hey KA, the Hxaro archive says my version of Eternal Flame is an Octothorpe cover. Though I would pay money to hear Octothorpe do an album of Bangles covers, it's not an Octothorpe cover. It was just a part of Octofest. (It was just my attempt to add a concert staple-power ballad into the festival, though it just came off like I had some kind of Octo-crush.)

There is a "sidefights" link from the .org homepage, it looks like it hasn't been updated since 2006, though. A bunch of things are hosted on aaronondek.com, which I think is connected to Spud somehow. Some of the fights are self-hosted and the connections to those songs are spotty. But I suppose a lot of those songs still exist on somebody's computer...
I guess a group of us could consider collecting and archiving some of that stuff here - since it wouldn't change often (mostly just to add new songs), static .htm files seem like they work, we don't have to get into the online database or php areas.
Umm... coverfights, nur ein, AADs, skirmishes, etc.... and, obviously, a lot of stuff has happened since 2006. Copyright concerns about things like the Neil Diamond coverfight, or do I worry too much?
Niv - http://www.songfight.net/nurein/ gets me to a list of "Time to Panic" songs, is there a way to get in there that gives links to the various titles?

aaronondek.com is (or at least was) the site of Aaron Ondek, aka Stubs, the wordsmith behind most Octothorpe songs.
