Hi OK so looking into my route back and forth between Downtown, where I'm staying, and Long Beach ...

This is a dumb tourist question, but what's the most sensible, efficient way to do it? The LACMTA system looks like a long way, and I am paranoid about travelling back through "interesting" parts of town late at night I guess a taxi would be expensive? Would it be worth getting a hotel in Long Beach for the night?

Any advice from those who are in the know would be very welcome!

Mass transit is a joke in most of California (and in San Francisco it's still on the order of an unintentional pun). You might consider renting a car, if you have an appropriate license - Enterprise is pretty cheap.

I was planning on getting a hotel room, which I assumed I'd be splitting with Jack or someone else.

So are we good on mics and stands? How many channels does the PA have? We'd probably go direct with both the acoustic guitar and bass as we did in Spokane. Does the PA have line inputs, or will we need to bring DI boxes?

I can supply two mics and two stands.

This sounds like no one is counting on a full band drum set type set-up, is that correct?

BTW - I have like - no graphic art skills. Anyone interested in making a poster/flyer for this that I could take over to the restaurant?

j$, for a venue convenient overnighter, the http://www.beachplazahotellongbeach.com/index.htm might be a relaxing possibility. It's a decent enough neighborhood, and if you're feeling alt-touristy it'll pro'lly appear in whatever SoCal movie you happen to be falling asleep to on the 'tube that night, too.

And yes, I'm feeling nostalgic for the old neighborhood, which drives the recommendation.

I can bring more stands and mics if need be.

I also have stands and mics. Most are condenser but I just remembered I have a couple okay dynamics (one of which is a ribbon mic)

So in order to be sure we have enough equipment how about each of us lists what we will need for our act and what we are bringing. I'l start a list here and you can add corrections.

J$ - a ukelele, two microphones, and a PA (that's a song title waiting to happen)

Ross - a guitar, a direct box, a microphone, a PA, and a music stand (I'll bring all of this except the PA)

Fluffy - a guitar (will you mic or plug in?) a microphone, and a PA

Kasper - a guitar (will it plug in?, will it be electric?), a bass, a bass amp, two microphones, a PA

Minty Handy - a ukelele (I assume he'll bring his own) and a microphone, and a PA

Will Jack be performing? what will he need?

So, from the above list I will bring:
two microphone stands,
two dynamic microphones with cables
an acoustic guitar with built-in pickup
a preamp for my acoustic guitar
a music stand (the sturdy manhasset type)
a ukelele

Fluffy will be bringing: edited 7:11 pm
* Ibanez acoustic guitar with built-in tuner and pickup
* Separate soundhole pickup which sounds way better than the built-in one
* Laptop and portable recording interface

and will probably be bringing:

* Jack
* Jack's PA (Jack, what are its dimensions? I need to make sure it can fit in my Fit)
* A music stand

Kasper will bring:
their own guitars?
A Bass
A bass amp

Minty Handy will bring:
his own ukelele

Jack will bring:
??

Who or what am I missing?

I will be bringing a soundhole pickup, but I might want to mic at the actual venue. Depends on how it sounds, I guess.

I provided a full list of what I'll be bringing elsewhere in this thread. It sounds like we're good with mics and stands but I can certainly bring some of those too. I'm still waiting to hear from Jack about how big his PA is, to see if it would be reasonable to bring my cello or not (since I'd love to accompany people on it, if they'd have me do such).

We'll be using a guitar (acoustic with pickup), bass (electric) and two mics. We'll bring guitar and bass. I can also bring a bass amp if we need to. I can also bring microphones and stands, but it sounds like we'll probably have enough.

ok, so i just talked to my buddy Mark, who has the PA. I can pick it up before we leave from the Bay Area. But I think someone in the LA area will need to bring the speakers/cabs. I just don't see there being room in fluffy's car for that.

it's 11" x 11" x 19".

also, i'm not really wanting to play a set, but i'll work the sound/PA. otherwise, i'll work the crowd.

How big are the speakers? The Fit does have a decent amount of cargo space (about 53 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down).

But for an acoustic show, do we really even need a big PA to begin with? I mean, okay, my guitar amp is definitely not enough for any reasonably-sized/crowded room, but maybe someone has something larger that would be sufficient.

well, the speakers he has are too big. all i can possibly provide is the PA itself.

the PA is really only necessary for the vocals. one could also conceivably run the bass and or a keyboard through the PA, which would reduce the need for amp space.

the other option might be to find a place in long beach that could rent a PA and speakers for a night and get everyone to chip in $.

I will indeed bring my uke, unless I get odd suddenly and drag a piano or something. Probably not. Is there a theme for this evening, as far as the type of songs and level of kick-ass to pack?

Oh, and not to nitpick, but two mics, one for the uke, unless I can get an electric uke by then (which may happen -- or heaven forfend, a banjolele!)

'Kay, I have just purchased a mahogany Eleuke -- this show was a great excuse to finally do it. In theory (dunno how good it'll sound) I can pipe a prerecorded backing track through it via iPod as well. Dunno if I will, but it'll all come through the uke output if I do. I'll bring the Fluke too just in case, but hopefully this means I only need the one mic plus a line for the uke.

EDIT: turns out mahogany Elekes are hard to find. Order got canceled, out of stock, at two different places. I'm trying a rosewood one at a third place. Who knew electric ukes were so popular?

Oh wow, this is coming up real soon. I've got to get my wrists under control - they've been hurting again lately.

Anyone interested in splitting a hotel room? It looks like there are many excellent nearby options. I was planning on arriving Thursday night and leaving Sunday, although I have Monday off as well so I could extend it until then.

Jack, am I picking you up, or just the PA? Either way we need to hash out details - PM me with your address and such.
