Wait, what? I'm the biggest Billy Joel fan I know, and I never once thought anything OK Go did sounded like Billy Joel.

Rip was not the right word. It's not a copy. I meant, every time I hear the OK Go treadmill song, the verses sound like Billy Joel's "we didn't start the fire". But then again, I hear things different than some people, lol. My memory will remember a C as an E when playing from memory. And I almost ALWAYS get movie quotes wrong, because my memory association is an image that "I" associate with the quote that only makes sense to me quite often. So basically, I'm weird. :)

But seriously, you don't hear it? Tell me you do even if you have to lie so I don't feel like I'm going mad. :geek:

I hear that OK Go as somewhere between that Billy Joel song and something from Lene Lovich. But that's just me.

Shwew. It's not just me. :)

And while we're on the subject, that Ok Go treadmill song opening guitar part right when the drums starts, reminds me of the old original MTV theme music, lol. Just the first 5 strums though. Yeah, it's a stretch. Might just be the guitar tone, not sure. But my mind flashes images of the rocket launching or the moon walk intro on old MTV. But like I said, I have an odd way of remembering things. :P

I just love that OK Go have made a career mostly out of elevating the stupid shit that kids do when they mess around with [insert thing here] to performance art.

Well, and setting it to pretty good music.

Eh, it's kind of there. I don't think you're completely insane, but it's not an association I ever would have made on my own. Maybe because I'm a bit too familiar with both songs individually.

Also, I hate to sound like a total hipster, but the only OK Go album I liked was their first one, and the video for their first single "Get Over It" was the best they ever did. I'd link you, but it's not on Youtube (they've probably never heard of it; too obscure...).

Oh hey, they must have posted it one second after you posted this. :P

First off, love the song.
Second, because it starts like a Billy Squire's "stroke", then INXS "what you need", then becomes a Pixie song, lol.
Third, these guys must write their songs following one of those "how to make a hit song" studies, lol.
Fourth. I don't have a fourth.

I'll be curious to see whether a Youtube search looks different when I get home. I ran the search from my work computer, and the network here has been omitting some results unexpectedly.

Anyway, yeah, I love that first album. Some of it feels like it was written with kind of a "This will be a hit!" mentality, but the rest of it is unpredictable and twisted in the best ways. And the "hit" stuff (which really wasn't commercially successful anyway) was lots of fun anyway.

Their manager at the time was John Flansburgh. I don't think they still have a working relationship with him, but I'm not sure.

Some very fun insights from Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Well, from Steve, anyway...

This is a great interview. Very inspirational. I love these two working together. :)

Steve: If her last name would have been Moskawitz, where would have gone?
Edie: Box of ritz.

It's incredibly cool that they used a painting by Martin Mull (the actor) for the album cover and when asked how he wants to be compensated, he said just use it, he doesn't mind.

This is awesome. Check out this recording from Friday night of Glenn Case playing his "Throw Money" album live with a great band including Rachael Layne.

They sound awesome! Way to go Glenn!

I liked his views on "meaning" in art. His approach is that he feels his banjo has something to say and he's trying to help it, and Edie's lyrics are an extension of releasing that meaning. But too often when art is trying to carry a specific "message" it's boring.

Yeah, that was a good description.

I think I connected because Dee and I take the same approach. I have a musical idea or make music with an emotion, but no lyrics in mind. Then she gets the music and gets inspired by the way she interprets it and makes it live and breathe.

This is officially the only valid use for a two-headed guitar.

We generally call that a double neck, but two headed guitar is cute. :P ...and also accurate.
Pretty cool, even though he kind of milks it in the beginning. But when start crankin', it is cool.
