Right, I am doing "Watching the Detectives With Suspicious Minds". Mash-up, dub, bring it.

Shit just got real.
I am 80% through my Elvis v Elvis recording. Just final mixing to go:
Elvis C: (What's So Funny About) Peace Love & Understanding (which turned out in a weirdly gospelly sort of way)
with bonus
Elvis P: Kissin' Cousins ( which turned out (not unsurprisingly for people who are familiar with my influences) a little like this:

I spent the morning channeling Jimmy Reed doing Treat Me Nice. Not too ambitious, just seeking that Jimmy groove.

Yup, just quit my gov'm't job for a 9-5 that I'm qualified for (rather than just brute muscle... throwing mail sacks around) and since Kimi's off in Cali I actually listened to the Elvis song I claimed. Uh-oh... big fucking song, and emotionally baring, too.

i've started to get the overall tone for my cover in my head. it's pretty different from the original. the lease for my new apartment has a clause saying "no musical instruments" for apartments. fortunately, amy poheler's dad, the broker (i am serious), made an exception to this rule. to not take advantage of his bending of the rules, i may track floor toms in the backyard.

Elvis Costello was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
According to Rolling Stone, he did in fact make a racist comment about Ray Charles, but I am disappointed to find out it wasn't [CENSORED] that punched him in the face for it. Whoever the real face punching Bonnie was, good for her.
Besides a couple of catchy tunes, he has always kind of irritated me. Until he appeared on Colbert's Christmas special, anyway. On top of it all, he isn't nearly the wreck that Presley was.

No, I hold Costello in contempt for that one. And Elvis was a bundle of neuroses, and a totem of the times that invites delicious exploration. Someone should grab Mama Liked the Roses.
On the other hand, if we are talking straight covers, I have the advantage of having faithfully covered at least a dozen Presley songs while doing the rockabilly thing. I probably still remember the lyrics.
Of course, the challenge remains with the music -- I am a remarkably poor instrumentalist. And Klownhole is on sabbatical.
For that matter ... Which one? Anyone already claimed That's Alright? Brown Eyed Handsome Man? Big Hunk 'O Love? Tutti Frutti? Mystery Train?

Because of some changes in what I have available to work with, I think I need to switch to "Can't Help Falling in Love" / Elvis Presley

His explanation was that he was trying to piss off some dicks he was surrounded by. Sounded like a reasonable excuse to me. And Ray Charles seemed cool with it. Give Mr McManus a break.

I had to scrap my original plan (which was to do a faithful reproduction of the original version of "Hound Dog" as far as the instrumentation ... but with my weird vocals on top) ... now I'm going in the opposite direction (not at all faithful version of "Can't Help Falling...".)

I have not had time or reasonable recording space.
