Well I can't pass up such a request. I guess I'm writing a new concept album.

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
niv, you can count me as "interested" (terribly, truly and deeply) - i just can't make promises with courses beginning on August 15.
and in the meantime, i already mentioned this elsewhere, but here's a more official release of my latest album-length effort for public scrutiny and hopefully enjoyment:
swim for shore
a .ZIP download with lyric booklet is coming soon.

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
reviews to be fair:
judgeblood - in the valley
+++ rock! +++
/// i love the percussive loop that begins the song, but it disappears after the first chorus or so; why not bring it back later? ///
+++ guitar goodness and excellent use of stereo space; i'm taking notes +++
await rescure
+++ overall very good production values, crisp playing and good vibe; sounds like you put on a good live show +++
bomb's away - great rock out; reminds me of to the moon alice
psycho tangerine rider - meh; middle-tempo
send - great build, but ends too soon
/// overall, i would say you have some undeniable talent and some great production savvy, but the feel gets a little samey after a few songs: straight-up alt-rock songs à la Candlebox. i suppose that this could wend it's way into the "signature style" vs. "genre monotone" but try branching out, pushing your musical talent into different styles ///
jim tyrell - charlie freak
+++ i love the mellow groove on this cover +++
abominous - you know i'm no good
/// i rather like the original of this song, though it tends to get monotonous ///
+++ this version ROCKS! +++
--- it would be nice to have more sonic difference between the verse and the chorus ---
ugur dariveren
+++ you, sir, have some serious guit chops +++
--- but i will reiterate what i said about Await Rescue above. within the (somewhat narrow) genre that you have chosen, this is very good stuff. however, it doesn't come across to me a very fresh. reach out, push your limits and not just your technical ones, but your creative ones ---
johnny cashpoint - badly dubbed
/// i love atmospheric albums à la Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV or Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks soundtrack ///
+++ like those, this collection of compositions hits all the right notes: sprawling music with diverse textures, twists and turns that interest the ear. the music is calm enough to run in the background but complex enough to withstand close scrutiny. certainly not for everybody, but my tastes are left of center. this off-beat, unusual music is a new gem for my music collection. +++

As with previous Niv efforts I would be happy to help out.
Maybe there should be a separate thread for that...

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
Had trouble finding this thread because I totally thought it should be in the "Concerts and Events" section. That description includes "post links to recordings". Anyway.
Boxed Garlic used to be made of members of Magnetbox but now it's down to guitarist/vocalist Rob, who has recently recruited me to fill in on bass and drums for departed members. Anyway, click to the myspace link dealie ^^ and check out "Free Four" (Pink Floyd cover) -- first recording I'm officially a part of.

After finishing "Everybody Calm Down" I still had some of the blues in me, so I took a couple of hours today and threw down this 12-bar, 3-chord, grunted/screamed vocals, everything-sped-up-to-a-45rpm abomination:
http://www.jeff-robertson.com/flvxx/pla ... th_you.mp3
you been takin me for granted
you been puttin me down
you make feel like i'm unwanted
like some kinda clown
i don't know what you been doin
and i really don't care
one of these days you're gonna look around for me
and i won't be there
oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
shit's gonna catch up with you
you make me feel bad just for livin
guility for being born
you're always takin and never givin
i wonder what you're good for
one of these days you're gonna wake up in the mornin
you're gonna find yourself alone
i don't see the need to give you no warnin
i'm just gonna be gone
oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
shit's gonna catch up with you
you use your fists instead of talkin
you beat me up and tear me down
one of these days i'm gonna start walkin
and you ain't gonna stop me now
one of these days the law's gonna get you
you'll stand guilty for your crimes
you'll look for me but i ain't gonna be there
you won't have no one on your side
oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
this shit's gonna catch up with you

Love it. You should do all your songs like that.jeff robertson wrote:After finishing "Everybody Calm Down" I still had some of the blues in me, so I took a couple of hours today and threw down this 12-bar, 3-chord, grunted/screamed vocals, everything-sped-up-to-a-45rpm abomination:

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
freakin' awesome, that's what that is. full-bore blues rock, angsty, raunchy and all the good stuff.jeff robertson wrote: http://www.jeff-robertson.com/flvxx/pla ... th_you.mp3
... and two little critiques:
1) the drums sound like they're from a casio. live drums (or just some better samples) would open up the space and give the whole thing more grit. (can't have too much grit)
2) bring the vox down, maybe a touch, maybe more than that. i know they're distorted, but the clipping is distracting.
3) keep on rockin'!

Seriously Jeff, I'd love to toss in my alcohol breath back up vocals on this. If you do any more "just like it" hit me up, I'm all over this shit.

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
Well, ya got me there. I actually went out of my way to use the built-in midi drum samples that are built into the Microsoft Windows software synth. You know, the ones you get when you click a MIDI file in your web browser. I thought they'd sound cheap and trashy. They do, I guess, but maybe in the wrong way.nyjm wrote: 1) the drums sound like they're from a casio. live drums (or just some better samples) would open up the space and give the whole thing more grit. Funny thing is, this song probably rocks more than my actual entry for "Everybody Calm Down". (Which is even more Casio-ish.)

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)
I decided to start videotaping some acoustic performances in my basement, and posting the results to my YouTube account.
The first three are covers.
'Thirteen' - Originally recorded by Big Star
'All I Really See is You' - Originally recorded by Mark Lindsay
'Take on Me' - Originally recorded by a-ha
