If ever I were to hang myself, I would do it to "Our House" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. I mean that in a good way. It's very good. I like lying on the floor and listening to it over and over again.

The Spinto Band - Nice and Nicely Done

I just picked this up from a local record shop. I'm about 5 tracks in, and it's pretty amazing. Good job guys.

The Olivia Tremor Control - Music From an Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle

recorded on 4 track 1997/1998 in there and wow...seriously great. Very Beatles-esque. This reminds of the serious art of recording music well on a 4 track. Not easy to do.

I snagged on the merits of the name alone and I'm not disappointed. Worth it if you can find it.

"Fistful of Love" by Antony and the Johnsons is just breathtaking. The brass and the somehow subtle instrumentation even though the band's playing full-force. And Antony's voice! Holy mudder a Pete onna foggy afternun. Plus Lou Reed plays guitar on it, chic.

Hipcola, if you think that Dusk at Cubist Castle is good, you should hear their 2nd (and final) album, Black Foliage. It's about 10 times better. It's an amazing combination of sound and song and probaby one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time.

What I am digging recently:

Biff Rose's 1968 and 1969 albums - This man is so good. Sort of in the vein of clever songsmith Randy Newman, but far better. I hardly ever pay attention to lyrics, but his are just as good as his music. On the album sleeve, he has all these cute little epigrams, like "NUclear and UNclear are the same type of thinking...It all depends on how you use the U.N"...David Bowie covered his "Fill Your Heart" on Hunky Dory. Van Dyke Parks plays the moog on one of his songs. Great Stuff!

Why? - The Sanddollars EP I have no idea why this is put in the "Hip Hop" section of my record store, because this is pure bedroom-produced pop. Full of wonderful vocal harmonies and bouncy/melancholy piano songs, this is Why?'s best offering yet. 50 percent of Why?'s strengths lie in his lyrics, which contain some of the best I've heard in a while. Like "Is it sick to think I look best under florescent lights or in the cramped, corpse-like blue of an airplane bathroom?" And hilarious wordplay like "These are selfish times / These are selfish times / I've got shell fish dimes and sand dollars"

Asleep in the Sea - Not much of the music I listen to is contemporary, but when the Unicorns came out a few years ago I was floored and it is tragic that they have since departed from the world of popmusic. Asleep in the Sea are filling that gap currently with synth/guitar combo nasally harmonies. Their best songs are on their myspace page. I predict great things for this band.

J-Zone - Pimps Don't Pay Taxes - Ignore both the artist's moniker and album title. This is the best hip-hop album I've heard since Black on Both Sides. J-Zone is one talented guy. He produced, wrote, and performed the entirety of this album. He crafts hilarious rhymes and his song topics recall the old-school. J-Zone presents himself as a cheap, horny, obnoxious bastard, but his demeanor is so lovable that you sort of feel bad for the guy. You're not sure if it's really him or just a persona, but not in the way-too-self-aware Eminem sort of way.

Hey Geoff...I went diggin' today and came up with that Olivia Tremor Control album you recommended....ummm...wow? It's freakin' awesome! Thanks for the tip.

Also diggin' on the latest Caribou album, The Milk of Human Kindness...not sure about it yet. It's kind of like The Books, but ...heavier somehow.

And today I picked up a copy of this great country-ish band, Nickle Creek..Why Does the Fire Have to Die or something like that. Very nice sounding album...good morning music.

Also: Caribou (and Manitoba) are amaaaazing. And Blur's 13 is one of my very favorite albums of all time.

I haven't spent much time on somesongs, other then to see if Michael Gum or Kelvinator and some others had any other songs there. I noticed there is a fair amount of Songfight presence over there but here are a couple bands that I think deseve a listen for anyone who has yet to check it out.

Great west coast pop rock style. Could use a producer, but great songwriting and vocals. Don't know their story, but I think they are good enough to be close to a record contract. And they have a cool name, which is like 99% of what's important anyways.

This guy rocks your lame ass. I didn't listen to him for a while despite the high ratings bc I thought he would be novelty country or something. The amount of sonic imagination in his songs is dizzying. Digging up Dinosaurs is awesome.

My wife's got some albums of theirs. Haven't heard them yet. Girl in the band is cute.
I also enjoy Doug Cheatwood and Rivals. The first is pretty strange and cool.

I know I'm venting about this everywhere, but...

Do NOT go buy the new OKGO album based on what you think of them already.

It sounds like all those "new"-sounding "rock revival" bands like Franz Ferdinand and Razorlight and all that boring shit.

So, if you like that, I would imagine you will like the new OKGO album very much. However, if you like OKGO based on their first album, you will probably hate the new one also.
