This year's picks:

Don't Bring Me Down by Genius. It was on my list last year, and here it is again. I love it, and think some melodic-rock songfighters could record a great flavor of this.

First Things First by Phantom Planet. A bit loud, and infectious as hell. And we all know how infectious hell is.

Chicken Wire by The Pernice Brothers. Obligatory depressing, slow song.

Trips by Songs To Wear Pants To. A short burst of energy. If you're not comfortable with the other options, or for whatever reason yearn for something short and strange, this is your cop-out song.

I can provide full samples of any of these when the time comes. Otherwise, iTunes is your friend.

actually , now this is weird, i think this is some sort of signal... i've heard gary numan's "cars" three times, separately, today, so i'm switching one of my songs to that. also to commemorate me ordering a new prius today.

This song is awesome and makes me want to shake my booty.....just ask Bjam...it's not a pretty sight...but still an awesome contemporary Broadway showstopper.

ok. I wanted to do this last year...

Now, my new studio is about four days from usablility (is that even a word??) and I feel like I can do this.. so here's my list of covers I'd love to hear:

OK, no theme, just four of my favourites ...

Buzzcocks - You Say You Don't Love Me (1979)

This song is still, maybe ten years after I first heard it, probably my favourite song of all time. Not the best song, maybe, but the lyric is perfect and the music is intricate yet simple, and it's one of the few songs that ever spoke to me on a real emotional level.

The Slits - Shoplifting (Peel Sessions version, 1977)

I have three versions of this song - this is the 'Peel Sessions' version; the words are a little hard to decipher (compared to the version on 'Cut') but this has the mighty Palmolive thumping the tubs and that's good enough for me to accelerate it into any list of 'favourite songs'.

The Television Personalities - Geoffrey Ingram (1980)

A great songwriter, a charmingly amateur musician. A cute song that is sad at the same time. I write my lyrics with Dan Treacy as my role model.

Wire - Outdoor Miner (Single version, 1978)

I listened to this again when I was uploading it and realised how much of this 'Chairs Missing' era tune I try to emulate in my own music. The multi-layered harmonies, the ragged rhythm, the swirls of piano, the strange yet charming lyric... this is one of the few songs that I know of that was actually extended for single release, and I prefer this to the shorter, less piano-led album version.

If you get me, and at least one of these songs doesn't touch you, I despair for you. Really

Well, golly gee, the winter holidays sure are a great occasion for spending happy time with your family and friends, even if either or both groups aren't entirely well-adjusted. But this is not a super-duper time of year for everyone! For every internet rock star who is a valued and productive member of society, there are countless legions of lonely, single thirty-something guys who live in their parents basements; their only contribution to their world is to slightly increase annual sales of Zoloft and beer for whatever large companies provide those consumer goods.

While many of y'all are out yukking it up with your loved ones, playing reindeer games like "guess which year I'll finally get my cover," I hope you will spare a brief feeling of pity for these sad folks, who will be spending their Christmas vacations with no company but their thirty-seven cats and their internet connections.

But don't be sad! You can help bring just a little smidgen of joy to these people, and it won't even cost you about the cost of a cup of coffee. Nay, all you have to do is record a cover of one of these four fine chansons:
