I came across this competition they had at KvR for software developers. I downloaded a few of them, but haven't tried them yet. I read some of their board reviews on the stuff and they did mention some of it was cpu intensive, but I figure it's worth trying. You have to register there to download. You may have to scroll down to see the stuff.

Need some drums?

http://www.native-instruments.com/index ... ewdemos_us

Raring to go - download the new BATTERY 3, MASSIVE and FM8 Demo Versions, and really put them through their paces. The new demos are in fact full versions, which are locked in demo mode after installation. With only a few limitations, these new demos grant you access to the full feature sets and functionality!

http://www.playinmusic.com/Free_Loops.htm

Playin' Music is offering a selection of their acid loops available free. There are currently 60 free loops with more to follow monthly.

Included in the free section are drum loops, electric and acoustic guitar loops, vocal loops, bass loops and synth loops. They are all 16-bit/44k wav files, fully acidized with the beats and keys set. They are readable by any program or instrument that can read wav files and are optimized for programs that can read the acidization.

i would just like to say that massive is an AMAZING (albeit CPU-heavy) softsynth.

and battery 3 has a ridiculously huge library of excellent kits.

Nebula2 Free seems to have a bunch of things you can use, Reverbs, EQs, mic modelling etc.

I've also been using the Tweakbench stuff, and love it.

Could someone post a secret decoder ring for all these plugin acronyms.
I go to get some freebee plug-in and it says its for just one TLA and Im like WTF am I SOL or AOK? This is it all just BS?

corrections please:

TYPE____Recordng App___________________OS___
AU______garageband, Audacity1.3__________MAC
VST_____cubase,NOTgarageband___________MAC OSs
DirectX__cakewalk_______________________ Win only
TDM_____ProtoolsHD only_________________ protoolsHD
HTDM____protools_______________________
AS______protools________________________WIN Mac
RTAS____protools only____________________Win MAC

MAS... anyone?

Free wrappers/converters ... anyone?

TDM= protools HD systems HTDM = host TDM
RTAS= Real Time Audio suite
AS = Audio Suite
VSTi = the same as vst but it's an "instrument." i.e. a sound generator that needs midi input.
(thanks Bill and Magnetbox)

rtas is protools.

vst should work everywhere else.

direct X are for windows apps, and usually ship along with VSTs.

Great find Ken!
I just installed the whole Modern rack. Damn, some of the units are awesome. The analoger and the exciter are really good as far as my limited knowledge can tell. But right away I can tell I'm going to get some good use out of them. I'm still playing with them.

Be sure you get the three at the bottom. The UAD-1 LA2A is my favorite vocal compressor.

I just downloaded the full installation and it includes the bottom three. But you said, "The UAD-1 LA2A is my favorite vocal compressor". Are you referring to the LA-2ME? I don't see a UAD-1 LA2A. :?

pegor, vsti is the same as vst but it's an "instrument." i.e. a sound generator that needs midi input.

TDM is for Protools HD only. AS is not real-time RTAS. RTAS is Real Time Audio Suite, AS is just Audio Suite. These run in both Protools LE and Protools HD.

HTDM is Host TDM. I think it's some cross between RTAS and TDM.

Ya, it's a clone of the UAD-1.

I don't have the original to compare the sound. Do you Ken?
