I do think that this idea is so doomed by the inevitable flakiness of some contributor. I guess missing a deadline wouldn't be that bad, but somebody squeezing out a turd to make it on time would be. Then who decides whether to cut the 30 seconds of crap from the entire piece? It looks liek Jim, you're taking full control of this beast, and doing an excellent job. Hopefully we can really rely on the people who've signed up, but if you're going to count on 51 strangers to make a year's worth of continuous music... well... I guess it just seems to be a major stretch. However, I'm in. I'll board the train to hell. My fiancee can tell you I'll keep my commitments to any musical project before paying rent or doing other essential functions.

You're in, 8LO. I share your concern about the occasional bad apple. I suspect that at the end of the project, the resulting piece will play more like a photo album of the Songfight community rather than a cohesive single piece of music, but I also think the requirement that each piece connect to the preceding one will maintain a lot of listener interest along the way. What I may do at the end of the project is go back and ask certain people to cover other people's pieces, people who sound like they'd do a good job, then use the covers instead if they're better.

Another idea I had over the weekend was one week to have a SFO fight, where there was a competition to come up with the next installment, and the piece with the most votes got added on. For now I prefer assigning it, because then I'm sure to get one every week.

Not only that, but they are only 30 seconds long. It shouldn't be that hard for people who are chosen to make up 30 secs. And besides if it sucks it is only 30 seconds and it sure does make up a nice music album of the community over the year.

And there's nothing that says it even has to be 30 seconds. It can be 4 seconds (though I think that's the lower limit for mp3 length). Sop I guess the moral of the story is, if you suck, make it short.

Not too late at all. There's no deadline. This thing can run indefinitely. You're now on the list.

There are about 16 people in the project in total, so that means for some of you it's going to be several months before it's your turn. I'm choosing people mostly randomly, but I semi-plan on eventually picking people based on where the piece is going and who I think might sound good next. But in any case, I'm not planning on repeating anyone until everyone's had a turn.

Oops, so I did. I also noticed some strange artifact with the volume near the beginning of Jack's bit. I'll fix both of those tonight.

OK, so I haven't fixed that yet. Anyway....

Leaf's entry sounds like it's going to be cool. This project is cool.

So Jack had a neat idea. At the end of the year we should have a contest to see who can guess the artist for the most entries. Owing to that idea, I'm not going to tell people who the entries are. (But if you really gotta know, I'm not going to get all against-the-rules-y on ya.)

Leaf, totally cool! I love how it segues, and how you use stuff from the previous lyrics in yours. Really great. What were you so scared about? And all those weird chords at the end are indeed going to be challenging to the next in line. You know who you are.

Oh yeah, and it's WAY TOOO LONG! Never thought I'd say that about a 1 minute song. I mean, totally cool, but come on, the rule was 30 seconds. While I wasn't going to be hard-nosed about it, you more than doubled it.

OK, so now I've changed the rules. Leaf, this doesn't apply to you since it was pre-new-rule, so you're safe, but from now on, anyone who goes over 45 seconds is out for the rest of the year, and is subject to editing in the final mix!! So there!

The reason the rule exists is so that in the end the finished piece will have a certain rhythm to it, where new voices and ideas come along at about the same frequency. That's the idea anyway.

i'v been keeping my eye on this, but just now got to hear the mix, and
its flowing very nice.. leaf section throws a nice break, but man does it remind me of that eroupean band Royal Hunt (in a good way).

Good job Leaf!!! Nice one. I especially liked the segueway from Jack's number into yours. Uber cool..... and your drum sounds rock!!

ok, just listened to the whole thing from top to bottom and I wanna shout out BIGASS style to everyone so far. Wow. This is freakin' cool. And for sure, LEAF, those are kick ass drum sounds. Nice work!

Jim, I'm now past the 2 week barrier of baby-bubble world, so this week isn't good, but next week or sometime after, TheHipCola would definitely be down with adding a slice to this all-dressed pizzicato.

yeah... I knew it was too long, and I tried to make it shorter, faster, whatever... next time I need to cull my ambition even more... but ... at least I'm not banned yet!!
