My guitars and stuff arrived in Australia from NZ yesterday - but are all still sitting in a container in the Port of Brisbane somewhere. But it will all have to stay there until we find somewhere to live. Hoping that we will buy a house in the next few days - so, all going well - I may be back and ready to record again some time just before Christmas, with this project the first cab off the rank.

What do we do if we get assigned someone that we've already had? Not complaining, by any means, about someone's picks, but mightn't it be better to get someone new? Just tossing it out there. Tee-hee.

I updated my post with song choices and links.

Also: Al Jarreau did a version of Take Five with lyrics; I had a copy of it a long time ago, at the end of a cassette of an XTC show (Boston 1980) originally broadcast on WBCN.

I have the sheet music for that, somewhere around here. My grandmother acquired a huge pile of sheet music once at a discount at someone's garage sale, and gave it all to me. One of the books was something like "Jazz Classics Simplified." The first one in the book was "Take Five," and the first thing I said when I look at it was, "Who wrote these stupid lyrics?"

So... yeah. Al Jarreau. Good to know.

Jim, if I get your list, I'm doing "Take Five" without the lyrics, thankyouverymuch. :P

Why would you be doing Take Five if you got Jim's list?

Also, according to the Internet, Dave Brubeck wrote the lyrics. Al Jarreau just performed them once. The original recording with lyrics was performed by Carmen McRea - with Dave Brubeck.

Thanks for letting a stiffer have another chance!

The fashion of vocalists adding vocals and lyrics to instrumental standards in the early 60's is one of the more painful trends to ever happen. Take 5 was originally instrumental. It was a couple years later they came up with a lyric/vocal version. It sounds like Bill Murray adding lyrics and vocals to the Star Wars theme to me.

Anyway my 4 picks which have little to nothing to do with jazz:

Suede (the London Suede in the USA)- the Drowners : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDyKYlMunQk
Superdrag- Slot Machine / Phaser : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d39MrZ0vdL4
American Football - Never Meant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV0LJ0Dnl7A
Jeff Beck- Let Me Love You Baby : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U85Eeh1_hcc
Phillipso, Older Brothers, Semolina Pilchards, Zipline , Thank Glennny for the Frisbee, The Odoriferous Valley, The Worldly Self Assurance, Berkeley Social Scene, Very Gentle Knives, Daddy Bop Swing Set, GUNS, The Kraken Lives, Cavedwellers

Might be, but I was not planning on editorializing any picks, just doing it randomly. M says she'll help me pick them.

I edited the list to have the most recent updates here. swilington was indeed listed twice. I am silly.

I also made my list. Here is is sans links:

Pink Floyd - "Time"
Frankie Valli - "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (M's pick)
Wire - "Map Ref. 41N 93W"
Primus - "Too Many Puppies"

The Primus wasn't covered before, was it?

You mean you won't be writing some sort of ramdomising program that takes into account all previous linkings of names to give us a new random but unique combination? I am disappointed.

It looks like the Primus was roymond's cover of DMV... ok then!

Note: we are missing lists from BLT, Wreckdom, Me$$iah. The deadline for having your list in is midnight tonight.
Or something like that. I'll draw the matches tomorrow sometime, so you better get them in.

I concur. In fact, I almost wish that the lists were collected in secret, so that I didn't know all the great selections I was missing out on!

Luckily a little Billbird reminded me to get my list in. It's always so hard, because there are so many songs I love and would love to hear a tribute to. But I've been in a punky mood of late, so here are my 4 songs. I hope you have fun, gifter. I know I would.

Nirvana - In Bloom

The Pixies - Where is my mind

The Breeders - Cannonball

The Ramones - Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
