Wow. There are some real beauts this round! Big faves: Therman (yeah, that one's going on the hard drive), Berkley Social Scene & The Real Sign. I really tried to get creative and make a fun song. But I may have gone too far on this one for some peoples taste, lol.

Yeah, cutting loose a little seems to have paid off in Round 0, so I figured I'd go for broke on this one. Stretched my range in the bridge, but hopefully it's worth it.

I know our track is just a demo, but I think it's far better than most of my demos! That's all thanks to Eric with whom I've been writing with since February. I think we've got 6 songs so far. I'm learning a lot about vocal control and playing in time. Hope it shows somewhat.

Nur Ein V - Round 1: Stranded

Adam Adamant
Vocals almost remind me of some 80's stuff like Psychedlic Furs or something. Not very diverse lyrically but neither was the Beatles' I Want You (She's So Heavy).

Berkeley Social Scene
Wow! Beautiful voice. This is one of the ones that intimidates me with the production values. I can't believe someone can write and record something like this in only five days. Really nice. I'd listen to a whole album of stuff like this.

Billy's Little Trip
Interesting harmonies on the vocals. I like how they're not following the same melodic contour. They're intertwined. I really like where the chords and vocal go for the Stranded line. Really stands out. I always thought it was sex, drugs and rock and roll. But I'm definitely liking the inclusion of barbecue more.

Boop Boop
I didn't read far enough in the lyrics post. I cut and pasted all of that into Google Translator to see what was being said. After that I saw the translation below. I'm still not sure what exactly is being said.

Holy crap! Is this a lost Beach Boys/Crosby Stills Nash/Beatles collaboration?! Another one that makes me say, really?! Five days? You did THAT?! Very, very nice. If I were a judge this would be my #1 by a long shot.

Very nice. When I first got the title I was thinking more along the lines of stranded on a desert isle. But you took it to space. Stranded in space and the sci-fi aspect is great! Very nice voice. Some of the inflections and the half singing/half spoken parts remind me of Ani Difranco. Great piano playing too.

I like how the bass and clarinet (?) came in after the first verse. I especially like the little 2-note lines around 1:35 the way they jump up and down the scale. I was expecting it to stay just acoustic and vocal - which would have been fine with me. Just a simple Working Class Hero kind of vibe. Double tracking the whispered part panned hard left and right definitely made it jump out on headphones. "The voice is coming from inside my head! Arghhh!" hahaha So I'm assuming the tree is the one stranded?

Hoglen & Wages
Glad I'm not the only one who altered the title a little with some parentheses. Very nice chord progression. I like all the suspensions. I like using those kinds of chords on acoustic. Especially if they use open strings. Very nice harmonies on the vocals too.

Johnny Cashpoint
I've got a clear visual of a sad little terrorist huddled in the corner of an airport restroom stall sobbing. The Stranded title didn't even connect with me with all the people stranded because of the volcano. I don't know how I didn't see it. You couldn't avoid it on the news. But this took it to a whole other level. hahaha Love the "terrorist's rights for cancelled flights" line. Between this song and the couple of bomb references in Time to Panic this forum is going to be on the FBI watchlist.

Jon Eric
The switching between 4/4 and 5/4 (or 9/8, 9/4 however you hear it) kinda threw me, but it totally fits. Nice vocal range and tone in the chorus. Then the drums kick in with the odd timing. That must have been a challenge. I liked the panning of the drums back and forth around 3:40. I thought it was done then. Then you came back in after the whisper. Wow! That was great. Very emotional.

Milo Dunderville
This one is fun! The little backing vocals repeating at the end of the lines was great (Tiki tiki!). Loved the tom tom hits on the drums.

Minty Handy
Love the metaphor on this one. Great lyrics. Love the rhymes. They fit so well without seeming contrived. fault/salt, go/undertoe. They set the deserted isle scene well.

Naked Philosophy
This one almost could have fit with the last challenge with the counting of the hours. And being stranded in a WalMart would certainly induce panic. hahaha Great idea for somewhere to be stranded. It amazes me how many vastly different ideas people can get from the same title.

Noah McLaughlin
I like how it builds after the first part. Especially the heavy guitar over the "what is this sickness" line. And it seems to rhyme in English and French?! That's impressive.

Rabid Garfunkel
Isle of you. Brilliant! Exes and zeroes. Great double meaning. That's some clever songwriting there.

The Real Sign
Another one with a very 80's feel. Really nice chorus. I wasn't expecting it to go up like that on stranded. That was nice. Great harmonies there too. Bridge was great! The slide part going back up to the chorus was a great build up. The grit in the vocals on the last chorus was really good too.

Sid Denison and the Harpooners
Love all the Norse gods references, and even included hyperlinks! Awesome. The sound effects in the background were great too. That volcano really influenced a lot of the songwriting this week. Hammer of the gods. In my head I can hear this smoothly segue into Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song.

Therman
Love that dirty guitar tone. The low chords with the high stabs reminds of some Jack White/White Stripes. The lead tone and playing were fantastic too.

Same Day Positive
I like the melodic contour of the "I wanna die" line, then the bass follows it later. The kazoo, or whatever it was, unfortunately didn't add to it for me. The low cello sound was nice. I love that rich resonant sound.

Who Fly
I like how you went from the slow triplet feel of the first part to the straight 4/4 feel of the 2nd part. Nice transition.

I did a drumcam (as usual). I used a spotlight for this one, so it has better picture quality, but a lot more shadows.

Reviews, Part 1: The Headphonesening. (Reviews were written based on dry listens, on headphones. Bear that in mind when interpreting my comments on your mix, but hey, lots of people will be listening on headphones. Think about that when you're mixing.)

Adam Adamant - Thin organ, minimalist drums... Hey, I'm not sure what you did to those vocals, but they sound neat. This reminds me of Beck. I do wish there were more to this, lyrically, but the modulation of your voice is pretty amazing. There's a high synth, I think it's kind of a sawtooth type thing... mostly it's just droning, and I think it's mixed too high. The whispering feels like kind of an afterthought. Though I like the sudden shouting in the middle of the whisper break. I did something similar with the whispering in my track, so hey, great minds, I guess?

Berekley Social Scene - Oh my. Nice clean vocals. Great harmonies. I wish there were a bit more punch to the chorus vocal, to differentiate it. The harmonies get you part of the way there, but tonally, the lead voice isn't doing anything markedly different between the verse and chorus. There's various instruments coming and going in my right ear - a crunchy guitar, a sawtooth synth - and they serve as neat touches, but the hard-panning is a bit distracting. This is a very strong entry.

Billy's Little Trip - Nice interplay between the bass and guitar. They both sound a little bit off from the harp, though. Hey! You used the challenge in a much more organic manner this time. The lyrics are clever and incorporate the title as a theme effectively. Jeeze man, you're gonna mop the floor with us if you can keep getting your stuff in on time. You and me, we need to attend a fake-drumming workshop together. We've both got a case of the fakeys. Oh well. I like this song a lot. It runs a bit long, but who am I to complain?

Boop Boop - There is a significant lack of booping in the intro to this song. Hey, Spanish lyrics! This is a little bit simplistic for my tastes, and I wonder if it uses the foreign-language lyrics as a gimmick to mask the song's inner simplicity and jokeyness. It's definitely well-produced, but I'm asking myself, if this were sung in English, would people still be talking about how amusing and entertaining it was? Hard to tell.

Brodeur & Gliniecki - Heh, this sounds like the intro to one of my old songs. I hope you can stick it out until that new microphone comes in, because you'll be downright decent when that happens. With your current equipment, it might be better to try to hold back your voice a tad, or take a step back from the mic, because you keep singing too loud for it, and the resultant clipping (mild distortion) is distractingly obvious. Do you have access to a keyboard instrument? Some organ would have been nice to add some texture, maybe. Oh, jeez, that background hiss over the whispered vox is going to kill you here. Has some potential, but without some decent mixes, you'll only go so far. Good luck.

Chris Cogott - Who the heck are you, anyway? Jeeze. Brilliant mixing. It's the kind of mix that just sucks you in and makes you wanna listen. I wish I coudl get that good. Your acoustics are jangly, your background instruments sound like they're right behind me. Your vocals sound like you know exactly what you're doing. Might this win you an immunity? Oh man, those Beach Boys harmonies are the stuff that wins are made of. Well fought, friend.

(As a side note, I've noticed that, so far, no one has done a straight-up interpretation where "stranded" is bad. The first thing I thought for this title was stranded = alone = bad. But most of the songs so far have been "stranded with you," or "stranded but not alone," or in BLT's case, "Stranded, but I like it." And the one who did take the negative route used parodic ethicity to play it up for laughs. Interesting.)

DJ Ranger Den - Vocals are improved over last week, but it still sounds like you're not putting a whole lot of emphasis on following the piano. It works a bit in your favor this time; sounds a little like Ani. When you start belting, it sounds a lot more "on." I could get behind this a lot more easily if it had a bit more structure. It feels really rambly right now. Dig the vibrophone, though. Keep digging, you just might hit gold yet.

Emperor Gum - The vocals are better recorded this time around, but you're way off-key. Here's a tip: If you've got some background hiss in your microphone, then it might help to leave it on in between lines. That background hiss clicking on and off is more distracting than if it were constant in the background. Oof, that whisper is badly mixed too. It's louder than your sung vocals. That's really badly distracting. This is another one of those entries that runs a little long. It feels like it's ending just as that last verse is about to start, and then WHAT? THERE'S MORE? I know it's really subjective, but often, the listener will suddenly pick up on a series of cues that lead him/her to believe that the song is ending, so it can really stretch one's patience to have to hear another verse after that expectation has been set up. I'm probably guilty of that this week, as well.

Hoglen & Wages - Hey, doubled vocals. The interplay of the guitars here works pretty well. When you kept talking about your collaborator, I thought you meant someone who would add bass or drums to your mix, but in fact, adding a second guitar and voice makes a huge difference here. Also, this one doesn't feel like it's trying to be a harder rock song, like some of your past songs. This one feels like it's happy to be an acoustic number, and that self-assurance makes it feel more whole. I like this a lot, and it would be a real shame if you got eliminated this round.

Johnny Cashpoint - Chimey chimey! Hey, what's with everyone just singing the title right off the bat? Wow, what a subject! It clicked for me right around 0:33, and I actually had to pause to catch my breath, then start over. The composition is very roughshod and the melody is simplistic, but good Lord do you get points for originality.

Jon Eric - So I says to myself, I says: "Jon, the judges have a really hard time getting through all the material in round one... don't you just want to waste all that goodwill you earned with your Round Zero winner by turning in a six-minute epic to slog through right in the middle of the setlist?" Yeeeeeeah. Overall, I'm happy with how this came out, actually. There's a couple of things I'd like to correct (for instance, I've got an increasingly annoying habit of letting wrong lyrics slip into the final take), but overall, I think I nailed what I was going for. Now, whether it was worth the effort? That's for someone else to decide.

Milo Dunderville - Nice clean bassline. Your voice continues to sound VERY familiar... Is this Jim Tyrell? Oh well. The lyrics aren't nearly as interesting as last week's. Oh well. There is a place in this world for songs about hanging out at a resort/club/whatever, but I don't really have a whole lot of interest in them. It comes off as advertising to me. Sorry, dude. See you next week.

I love it when Nur Ein! gets going! There are some new classics in this fight. I think BSS should pass to the next round, I'm too close to it to be objective about us, so I will start at 20pts for what i think is the best and work down. So this is how I'd rank them were i a judge this time:

These Top 5 are Super tight:

20-Billy’s Little Trip- I love this song! Great dynamics! Cool harmonica! Very cool riff! It’s all about the tasty bass line and the catchy guitar lines behind them! Drums are good! You’ll be a contender if you can submit on time, and the dog doesn’t eat your MP3s. Well placed whispers! Challenge done very well! The title I’m not as impressed with, it works, but might have been more powerful without saying “Stranded”. It was probably wise and safe to say “I’m stranded”. Well done! No solo? Just cool guitar lines. It’s a little disappointing on that front not to hear a solo from a guy who can solo.

19-Boop Boop- BK! You keep me guessing for what is next. You’ve got balls! I kinda want to drop everything and join the touring Crabs on Banjo. This is hilarious! However it is so musical, that even if the joke gets old, the song is still highly enjoyable. I love songs in languages I don’t understand, I’m not distracted by words I understand. I love the ending especially (a little Cygnus X-1 homage).

18-Milo Dunderville- Where did you come from? What a catchy song! Great playing, great hook! Very tasty bass! I predict you will win this round with this song. Nice use of the title! Nice lead tone! This song stays with me when I’m not listening to the fight. I fear you in the competition!

17-Christopher Cogott- Either you’re the biggest Built to Spill fan in the world, or I’m about to introduce you to your new favorite band: http://popup.lala.com/popup/360569475235773464 . I Love Built to Spill. Therefore I love this song too. It heavily reminds me of them. The organ is awesome. Drums sound great. The chord pattern is very nice. The harmonies are excellent! Good sir, you are going to be quite a threat with this quality of song-writing! Great bass line! Sounds like you’re kicking it in the sun! Great work!

16-Therman- Just kick ass! Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother I dig the false etto stuff! It makes for a good hook. This has some serious rock! I generally don’t like plodding dinosaur feet, but this is ominous enough to be great. Drums kick ass! You know if you do a vocal video, a bass video and a guitar video, you could make yourself a handy little music video.

These next 3 are excellent as well, I won't be surprised if any of them win:

15-Sid Denison and the Harpooners- I particularly liked this on headphones this morning. On my 7th listen or so, now with the surround sound home theater, pretty great. Not as hooky as you’re known to be, but maybe my favorite backing tracks to come from you. This is very strong. You’re going to go far, and if you’re ON you could easily take it. I love this song! Great beat!

14-Minty Handy- Does Frankie Big Face sound like Minty Handy when he sings “High and Whiney”? Great song man! I hope we hear some Uke along the Nur Ein! journey. Always excellent lyrics from you, no exception here. Great mood set here. Cool song!

13-Who Fly- This is great! Very interesting listen. I LOVE your vocal performance! The trip hop music is very nice too. You are a contender for the title if you keep this up. This is great! I’m always amazed when someone has enough restraint to provide so much space in their music. Very cool song!

The next 4 have good stuff-

12-J$- Quirky! Weird! Delicious in its oddity. Very short, perhaps wisely so. I enjoy this a lot. I really like the lyrics. It’s a good story. Good stuff as expected!

11-DJ Ranger Den- Alicia Keyes early writing session outtakes. Place a jazz noise here. I think this could ramble into “Choppin Broccoli”. I think a rhythm section would do wonders for this. I dig the piano and vibes? I however really would like to hear a bass line and jazzy drummer along with all of it. This may be too dynamic, I’m riding my volume adjustment throughout the song. It is nice to hear all of the notes in the key I must say! I like all the vocal licks, but I wish they found a strong main melody somewhere. Cool stuff!

10-Jon Eric- Dude, you are singing your ass off! Perhaps slightly beyond your abilities. Some of those notes sound painful, but I like the enthusiasm. When you’re slow you’re on, but that faster harder piano and drums are really awkward. Actually the whole drum track is not helping. It’s a rather well written song, but there are some serious performance issues. I like what you’re bringing to this Nur Ein! This is too long. Why didn’t it end at the fake out ending?

9-Rabid Garfunkel- Sounds like you’re reading the lyrics for the 1st time. I think a few more takes, so the lyrics flow more naturally would help this a lot. I like the song, I like the vibe. Your voice sounds good, the pitches are all alright, just the timing feels so awkward to me.

8-Adam Adamant- Cool beats. This is a good listen. Feeling like an outtake from “Outside” by Bowie. I like the organ a lot too. Is there a whisper? I’m missing it. There are virtually no lyrics to this. With your vocal style lyrics become very important. This feels very unfinished for that reason. I’m worried for you, based on challenge and lack of lyrics. That said, cool song! I like listening to it! Wait there are the whispers. Ok challenge box checked! But still in a bare minimum kind of way.


The next 3 will live for now, but really need to step it up and bring their A game:

7-The Real Sign- Why do all the ends of phrases bend down? I like the chorus a lot more than the verse. There’s a jamming band behind this too loud vocals. Nice spacey break down. Yeah the vocals are so loud it becomes kind of a karaoke effect. Not bad singing, I just don’t like the melody. Some cool stuff.

6-Hoglen & Wages- I think you will live. I listen with a cringe that slowly relaxes. I anticipate big scoops and off key singing, but it doesn’t come this time. Good job man! It’s nice to judge you on writing rather than performance. Your huge voice sounds under control. Your playing seems controlled. Whoever Hoglen is, he’s doing really good things for Wages. I like this song. It’s rather small and unassuming, but quite a pleasant listen. Good job!

5-Noah McLaughlin- Your huge voice really needs to find more of a melody. This has its charms, but it’s rather redundant. You’re stuck in a bit of a melodic rut. There’s some good dynamics going on here. It’s a shame, more variance in the melody, and a hook, this would be a powerhouse. Not bad.

The remaining 4 have some serious issues and I'm worried for their survival:

4-Same Day Positive- I don’t like the 1st half of the song. The cello is cool. I like the “I wanna die” stuff. I’m worried for you for this round.

3-Naked Philosophy- I have to say the first few bars, I thought this was the most amazing song. Excellent intro. It does not go where I think it could have. I don’t get the story at all. Why doesn’t the main character leave? He sounds more trapped than stranded. I still don’t know why he’s trapped there. Does he work there? Triple shift? Home Alone Wal-Mart version? Love the intro, don’t like much else about this.

2-Emperor Gum- Maybe this is the worst recording of the fight. I like the song. Nice playing! Clarinet is nice to hear. You really have to do something about your recording techniques. This is a charming song that is just murdered by poor recording production. What system or headphones did this sound good on? Or even passable? I fear for your survival.

1- Broduer and Gliniecki- This is the worst recording of the fight. Please seek some production tips as soon as you can. Then it will be easier to hear your highly unoriginal song. However, it’s performed just fine. Singing is not bad. Lyrics are terrible, perhaps they are hilarious and I’m an idiot for thinking they were serious.

The next one is my band, which I think should win everything every time, which is clearly not objective:

Infinity-Berkeley Social Scene- If this were Production fight, I think we got this one. This dragon used to be a hydra. We got off all but one heads. Tuesday night the 5 of us had a demo. The end result does resemble it a little bit. Our iterations included: Staccato- echoey Andy Summers rhythm guitar, Modal shift to minor for the choruses, a motion filled 12 chord chorus, robot voice bridge, clean tone solo, male backing vocals. The final result is pleasing, I like it just as much as all the other versions. The thing we need to improve on most is variance between our 1st and 2nd verses, as well as an intensity shift if we’re going to do a double chorus at the end.

Yeah I was kind of worried about being too quiet with the whispering, especially as I didn't have a good time with challenges last year, but then whispering is quiet . It was a bit rushed, especially the whispery bit, which I think Jon picked up on too, though the lack of vocals is mainly because I didn't have a lot of time to record (which is why there are only 4 chords in the whole song too )

Right now your drum cams are my favorite thing about this Nur Ein, my wife's fave, too. Keep it up. I'll be showing them to my son, who is four years old and drumming already. He's learning ProTools, too. It's kind of scary. Oh, and I still have your round zero submission going through my head as I write this -- real staying power, that one.

I hope we hear some Uke along the Nur Ein! journey.

If I survive round one, you will; I have to leave town Thursday, so I'll only have 24 hours to write and record my round two submission -- by necessity, I'll have to fall back on my strong stuff. But also: if I survive round two by some miracle, I'll have my new eleuke \o/ wooooot.

Yeah, I was going to speed up the song, but when I did, it lost it's groove. So I chopped my guitar solo, but still went a little over my mark. I shoot for 3:00 but I can live with 3:30. I just can't bring myself to cut my intros down even though I know they are a waste of space to some people. But intros to me are like cake is to a fat kid. So you thought my drums sounded fake? Was it all the Dave Grohl flams, lol. I love those snare flams. Thanks, Jon. Let's see how far we can take it this year. You're kicking ass!

My song went long and I had to start cutting it down. I figured even with my minimal skilled harp playing, it might go further than a typical guitar solo, so the harp stayed and guitar deleted. I get the feeling these days that guys like you and I are the only kind of people that enjoy a sweet guitar solo. But not to fear, I will add the wankery when the time is right. Thanks, Glennny.

In my mind, the secret to a good guitar solo is to play the solo to your own satisfaction, then split it down the middle, and either put 'em both in the song far apart, or drop one entirely -- then play the whole thing on stage (says the guy who can't solo worth a damn and so has no business having an opinion.)

That is pretty much my philosophy these days. If you notice, when I do a guitar solo, it's short. Another thing I've been enjoying is just squeezing in little micro lead guitar rips in open spaces, as long as it doesn't sound cluttered. That way I get to have my guitar fun with out annoying people too much, lol. And I'm no shredder by any means, but I can play the hell out of a melody, lol.

Hey thanks! My father told me I sounded like an abuser (i think the "primed to throw a fist" lyric too... it's metaphor i swear!) and so I've been pretty self conscious about those vocals.
