This is mostly just some off-the-shelf blues riffs recorded because I wanted to preserve this guitar tone I'd dialed in while I was fooling around last night, but I actually do like how the mix turned out considering how barebones it is.

That is a good tone - maybe a little more 'verb on it to really make it sound cavernously dirty - a wee bit too clean to be truly sexy! meanwhile, mixed far too low, are some really sexy sounding Beefheart-ian vox!

Agreed. Fantastic tone and some gnarly playing. Makes me realize that I've just been slapping any old tone down and will now rise to what I perceive to be a challenge, and dial something better in next time.

I took the 5 songs I made around that time period ("Cuts Like", "Mirrorball", "Woebegone", "Ashen Girl" and 'Half Past Summer") and compiled them along with a cover of Kix's "Don't Close Your Eyes'. The result is an odd little EP full of odd sounds and experiments. It’s a snapshot of myself in the process of figuring out what I want my music to be. It can be found at

New Album:
noah mclaughlin | it was a pleasure to burn
For those of you whom I have not bombarded with this news, I've completed 12 tracks of indie alt-country folk rock with a dash of sampling madness for flavor. Stream, download it (it's free!), tell your friends and push it on strangers in the street!
Seriously, please go and enjoy. I'm really proud of these tracks that highlight just how far I've come as a songwriter, musician and producer. It's got a smattering of things: some Song Fight! tunes, some from FAWM, a SpinTune, and a handful of original compositions no one's ever heard before!

Sounds good, dre. Having a pro running sound makes a big difference, doesn't it?

It Does! its going to be hard going back to bedroom recording, after that experience.
He also gave me a DVD with his protools session, for me to play around with...it has 10 drum tracks alone.. crazy.

Use it to help you learn. Take the tracks and dial in what he did until you can play them side by side and not know which is which. Of course it'll never be exact
All my songs have 10 to 12 drum tracks. It's the only way to get the whole dynamic field separated and filled best.

Ken uses only three mics on his drums and generally mixes them in mono I think, and they sound awesome! So, your mileage using 10-12 drum tracks may vary.
Also, nice recording. I really dig that song. You guys sounded awesome at Song Fight! Live.

True, but just think how good his recorded drums would sound with 10-12 tracks. He'd be a monster on tape. (yes, tape is old guy for mega bytes)
The only reason my drums tracks add up is because I handle crashes on their own tracks.
IE:
left OH crash
right OH crash
left room crash
right room crash
That adds 4 tracks to the mix.
The other 8 are:
kick
left OH
right OH
left room
right room
snare
left toms
right toms
Then if I add cowbell or other special drums or splashes, they get their own tracks. Everything gets mono tracks, never stereo.
I just noticed I'm getting off topic. So I'll stop, lol.

I like it! The pad or whatever the background thing is called by the pros, gives a great mood enhancement. I like doing that for the right song too. Your bass is sounding damn good.
Do me a favor. Re-do the vocals. It's on the money, but do it with less head and more throat and chest. Or if head is the only way to get the right mood, no nasal and more throat. Listen to me m*** f****, I'm a goddamn professional!
Good yob, mang.

Time to catch up a little.
Manhattan Glutton wrote:I made a demo.
Boring! Nah, just kidding. There are small nuances in there that make it work even though it's a bit slow, and of course the development is great as always.

Impressive demonstration of how flexible you are, musically. You appear to be at home everywhere.

Very interesting. And I mean that in the best way possible.
As always, the biggest potential to be had in all of these is in the vocals. Saying that all the time is getting old, though.
