Ok. So leave from work is sorted (you just had a holiday? It’s a rock and roll thing dude…). Flights are cool.

Accommodation? Any tips. Just seems like a lot of big box hotels in downtown Denver. That’s fine - any tips on where there are Simpson style Moes Bars an obnoxious Australian may feel welcome ?
Just wanted to say I'm happy that the "in real life" SFL didn't die. Far from it! Nice job everyone bringing it back to real life! Hope we can watch it stream on YouTube.

If you've got people flying in from Australia to attend, well fucking done. FOMO. :O

You'd want to get out of the city center a bit for true dive bars. I want to say Lakewood or Wheatridge to the west are the best bet. But I think you might find something you like closer in on Colfax, South Broadway, or Sixth Avenue. S. Broadway between 1st and Alameda has a good bar scene, and it's just a bit southeast where the show is.

Here's a map: https://www.google.com/maps/search/dive ... ?entry=ttu

And the Buntport theater is here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Buntp ... ?entry=ttu

And if they'll do this for Denver, imagine what they'd do for beautiful Santa Cruz again.

Hi everyone,

This is the keyboard player for Berkeley Social Scene. I am possibly bring my own equipment (or renting something when I get out there - it depends if I fly or drive). I saw mention of a P.A. earlier in thread, but I am unclear if anything has been decided yet. Normally, I hook things directly to the P.A. Would that be possible, or will I need to go through a guitar amp? Will there be enough amps to accommodate a keyboard player?

Thanks!

ha thanks! I can always be convinced to run it back again.

By my count, 8 different "artists" from this year played in Santa Cruz in 2006 (you, JB, Fluffy, Future Boy, Ken, Caravan Ray, Spud, and Sam).

18 freaking years ago!! Song Fight! OG Baby!

Got to admit - I did really like Santa Cruz. It was like my home town of Newcastle with cool beaches. But with the added attraction of otters! And fish tacos.

Santa Cruz was a great show yeah. I enjoyed all of the social time I had with everyone, and I liked the venue.

Not necessarily near our venue but a short ride share away, I think you’d like classic Colfax dives: PS Lounge, Lion’s Lair, and The Satire. If you don’t want a chain hotel, there are several bed and breakfasts and inns near those spots and should be Airbnb options near there too.

P.S. This took an hour to post so I will attempt to answer the other questions but please be patient since the forum server is being overloaded by someone somewhere!

The venue has long since closed but for me, the best part of the weekend (in addition to the shows obviously) was all hanging out at that beach house that Sam and Ken rented. That was a fun night. And I think Erin was in Santa Cruz too?, so the count is now 9 from this year! Maybe we'll do it again someday!

To me, that's what's so great about "IRL". You get to actually meet all these people you've virtually known for years and every one of them is cooler than the backside of your pillow. It's got such a history now and has become such a core part of Song Fight!, and what keeps it going for so long for so many people. It makes the community real. I'm lucky to have hosted one, and I'm blessed to have attended a few and they are always a blast. Thanks Jeff and Leah for keeping it going!

We have a keyboard so you do not need to rent or bring your own. I have been playing tag with the person most comfortable with sound at the theater so I know there is a PA but I still don’t have answers on the full specs. Regardless, you should expect that the keyboard we have will work with their PA and if it doesn’t, I will have borrowed or brought another guitar amp or whatever equipment is needed.

If I recall from jams at the BSS space pre-pandemic, your full setup involves MIDI keyboard -> laptop -> audio interface -> a mixer -> a DI box -> house mixer? The more specific and detailed you can be the better chance people have of understanding what you want.

Yes, that's correct. MIDI keyboard to laptop to audio interface to mixer to DI box. The audio interface sends out stereo sound, but I use the DI box to convert to mono. The output is a regular XLR microphone cable which can be plugged into the PA.

Do you usually bring your own power strip to plug all your components into so that your setup just requires one outlet? Or would you need a power strip provided?

Sounds like you might need a MIDI keyboard and if so there is one. Otherwise sounds like you need an XLR cable and a free channel on the house mixer, to plug your DI box into the house mixer?

Any ideas for a rehearsal space? I've been checking around and they seem few and far between. I'm gonna be in town for a while (I'm coming to Denver the weekend before for an event with a different online community) so I can scout in necessary.

The last time around, we booked a space at Swallow Hill. That's the only space I'm familiar with. We will have the venue all day Friday and Saturday, so the plan is to use it for rehearsal. Before that, I could probably make my garage available.

I'll try to get a look at/photo of the sound setup. Seeeeems like one XLR input should be easy to accommodate. The MIDI keyboard has a micro-B USB port for MIDI. I'm gonna go shopping for some cords and adapters here soon. What USB ports does your laptop have? A or C?

I'd have to look to see what I've traded but I know I have

A Fender Bassman 10 (4x10 combo, heavy but sounds delicious)
A Fender Supersonic 22 combo
A Fender Frontman 25R (which is very small but surprisingly useful for smaller gigs. It's what I used in Madison. Upgraded speaker to give it some oomph.)

I'll have to look at the stack tonight and get you other details. I know there's a modeling amp or two (line6 etc.,)
Turns out Leah has a friend with many guitars and amps that's willing to lend some, so you can save the car space. Thanks for being willing!

How's the lineup looking now?
I hear there's Yaks, Geech, and Caravan Ray to be added. Anyone else?
What hours of the day can we be there?
When do things start etc.
I'm sure it's not finalized, just curious what the current vision is.

thanks for all the work!

It is not. Also, I have been rehearsing there a bit, and we probably want to minimize it for the neighbors' sake. Maybe a few hours in the middle of the day Thursday. And then we should have all day Friday and Saturday at the theater. Not sure the exact hours yet.
