Not only was it unneccessary - it was probably the girliest headbut ever seen in world sport in the post-war era. He deserved 2 red cards for that abomination.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for going the nut and giving those cheating Italian bastards one to go on with - but who headbuts anyone in the chest?!? WTF! He may as well have fondled his buttocks and asked him around for tea and bikkies after the game. It's a bloody disgrace.

It's the format that lends itself to boring-ness. Ideally I would want a round-robin tournament - every team plays each other once, 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, none for a loss - at the end, the first placed team plays the second placed team - you still need a final.

This would resolve the problem of teams like Argentina going out 'early' - it's also more representative of the quality of the team.

However you would have to cut the world cup to eight teams to make this at all workable. So I know it's not really a good idea.

I think if a game is deadlocked at 90 minutes, they should shoot 50 balls onto the pitch at random and the first one to score wins for his team.

I'd like to see it increased to 256 teams in the finals (get rid of the qualifiers - let everyone in!) - then with 7 sudden death knockout rounds.

And I like the multiball idea. If after 90 minutes there's no result - a new ball every 5 minutes until some bastard scores. Or perhaps a golden snitch could be released...

I watched a lot of this, but missed the aforementioned headbutt, so I guess that was okay ... had to go out for my friend's "bachelor party" shooting things. However I watched the Germany-Portugal match and that one was pretty cool to watch. Fun!

A professional lip reader looked at the tape and it was determened that the Italian player was talking trash on Zidane's Mother who is currently sick and in the hospital.

And no I'm not joking. And I would have kicked that guy's ass too if I were in his situation.

Trash talking about someone's mother is still offensive? Man, I thought that would've died off years ago. It's so overdone that it should've lost all of it's weight by now.

Maybe the Italians and French are just starting on the whole "yo mama..." thing.

the italian player categorically denies saying anything about the dude's mother. that would be serious for an italian. also about terrorist allegations. i don't feel good about zidane getting elected the player of the tournament or whatever that is. that just seems wrong after he was ejected.

What do professional lip reader get paid nowdays? I think their standards are slipping. So far I've read reports that lip readers have said he bagged Zidane's mother, called Zidane a 'dirty terrorist' and that he called Zidanes sister a prostitute.

If was able to get all that out in the split second we saw on TV - then that must be the greatest on-field sledge of all time. The sort of thing that Steve Waugh or Shane Warne could only dream of. He deserves a medal - not a headbut to the chest.

(BTW: I've done a bit of lip reading myself - I could have sworn he said: "You rap like Rone Rivendale  )

This isn't a case of "yo mama" this is about a guy who knows personal info about another person and uses it to make them upset.

Just saying "yo mama" doesn't mean anything, but if your mother is sick and in the hospital and I make fun of her that has meaning to it.

Plus we're talking about overtime in the finals of the biggest sporting event in the world. Over 1 billion people are watching it. That's pressure.

I heard he called Zidane a harkie. Which I guess is like, a racial slur that means specifically an traitor to France with Algerian heritage. I dunno, sounds like the most solid story.
