ahh yes...review time:
Strong fight. A lot of very, very good songs here. Many are definitely vote-worthy, and my eventual choice is based only on arbitrary personal taste.
VOTE:
Ross Durand:
This is just great. You voice sounds wonderful. The "and I'm happy" line cracks me up. The overall tone of forced indifference amuses me immensely.
DESERVING OF VOTE - BUT NOT GETTING MINE IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE:
Seamus:
This is quite superb. You will probably win and you will thoroughly deserve it.
Paco de Stinko:
Great energy. Great fun. Nice slice of manic pop.
Booty Chesterfield:
A pleasure to be part of this. This came to me a virtually a finished piece of music – and I just added lyrics to it. I've never done that before, so I'm delighted it came out so well. I'm particularly pleased with how the 'ignorance is bliss' lyric hook fits the choppy guitar – that's been stuck in my head all week. Musicwise – I really love the guitar breakdown bit and the lead guitar towards the end. That is a highlight.
Team Seahorse:
Really well written song and great ensemble performance. You sound like you should be on television as cartoon characters who all live together in a big house on the Californian coast and solve crimes – then, at the end of each episode you sing a jaunty pop song. I think some sort of talking seahorse mascot would be appropriate. One who could do trumpet solos through his proboscis.
Darkest Daves:
Some lyrics don't quite fit well – but there is just so much good about this that I am prepared to ignore any bad. Apart from the few timing problems, overall the vox are just great.
BRILLIANT, THOUGH FLAWED
Delerimouse:
Is this Koushirou who has been lurking for ages but not entering? Dude - this is pretty good stuff - you should enter a lot more! The guitar on this is awesome – both the crunchy one and the lead melody. Really good song let down sadly by some dodgy vocals. The voice is pretty good – just wavering off key a bit – I'm sure practice will fix that. A good vocal would have made this a potential winner
Jolly Roger:
You never cease to impress me JR. Well written song with a good sense of melody. The only thing keeping this off the top shelf is just an overall lack of polish. Some minor mixing issues, vocal issues and timing issues – but judging from your posts in the Help/How To thread – you are aware of your shortcomings and working to fix them. There is no lack of talent your side – and with practice and experience I have no doubt you will soon be one of the elite players in this game.
MMMC:
Really well done, and some good lyrics. Some timing issues here and there hold it back a bit – but overall the rhythm of the vocal delivery is really good.
Bonfire of the Manitees:
Not really flawed - just not grabbing me like your last entry did. Fine effort all the same.
EXCELLENT WORK, THOUGH NOT STANDOUTS IN A STRONG FIELD
I can find no fault with any of this group – all strong entries in particular distinctive styles, but they're not screaming 'winner' to me. Genre bias victims.
Steve Durand, Melvin, Eclectic Spoons, Hillbilly
NOT BAD, BUT NOT REALLY DOING MUCH FOR ME
Wormsweater:
Not bad – I like the bassline – vocals don't seem to fit together well in some parts – a bit long for my short attention spa…..
Damien Veratt:
Pretty good – just not me.
Semolina Pilchards:
Nice intro – but then it gets a bit messy
Milk Machine:
Interesting voice – this almost works for me, but not quite. I'm sure that that voice could tell a great story Dylan-style – but the lyrics here are not keeping my attention. And the voice does occasionally stray from "gruff and interesting" to just "off key" – which is a shame.
Chin Music: I see what you are trying to do, and I can tell it really is a pretty good song – but for mine, I don't think it worked and it sort of ruins the whole thing.
…AND THE REST
Eddie Lance: I really don't get this.
Rone Rivendale:
This is just awful. I recall last week I compared your song favourably to Denyer. After hearing this – I owe Denyer an apology. (Sorry Denyer).
Great fight - points to Ross

I second this. I was a little cold in my review yesterday. This song could be on the radio, and on the charts, if it was produced to sound like the songs one hears on there.Caravan Ray wrote: Jolly Roger:

Hi. I've been listening to this fight all week and haven't had a moment free to collect my thoughts and write reqiews. As the week has progressed, one by one songs have been dropped off the playlist as I couldn't bear to listen to them anymore. The 21-song fight has winnowed down to 5 songs. So now i'm going to write reviews for just those 5. If you really want a review from me, PM me and I'll be happy to.
In order of favorites:
1. Team Seahorse
Haven't read reviews of this song, but your voice sounds exactly like the lead singer for Squeeze, a 70's-80's band from Britain. Took me 3-4 days before it dawned on me. This gets my vote because it is so seamless and the chorus is so catchy. I love how the vocal mix changes very subtly in the chorus. I particularly like the change-up in the vocal on "come on we're wasting time". That was needed. I think whatever point you're trying to make in the lyrics could be stated more clearly. As it is I'm not totally sure what the song's point is. Anyway, keeper and vote.
2. (tie) Seamus Collective
Fun lyric idea. I love that you stuck with the tango style and pulled it off so well. Reminded of Squirrel Nut Zippers, especially their song "Hell". I think the lead vocal is a little soft (styl-wise, not volume-wise) for the content. It needs more edge perhaps. The second bridge that goes on longer is cool. It would be fun if that built up more to the very funny kicker "Snuff ourselves out/Or die trying". Damn, I wish I'd come up with that line. I mean, it does built up some, but more would be fun. I think that also points to the lightweight quality of the lead vocal. Don't get me wrong, I like the lead vocal a lot, I just think a different approach would be more effective for this particular number.
2. (tie) Paco del Stinko
I love the reckless abandon with the lead vocal style. Singing it way up high in your register gives it a lot of fun energy. And I love how togetherly the band plays, and how much effort was put into constructing a complete song rather than just playing the chords. I love the ha's at the end.
4. Ross Durand
Great idea, and for the most part pulled off nicely. This could be a really good song, if it were for just a few tweaks. First, you're singing way out of your comfortable register, so you're missing a lot of notes. I figure you're going for a "16 Tons" kind of country style, but it really sounds hard for you to sing. Trade-off the low register idea for accurate pitch and raise the song up a few tones. After about the 10th listen I realized that there's an awkward moment in the melody that never quite works. It's where you sing "and I'm happy". There's a tricky chord change and the melody line feels forced to follow and isn't natural. Third, I wish the lyrics had more specific images. You talk about the papers and the TV and you have a few others, (lunchroom, PC updates,) but I'd like more to grab onto. Lastly, I'm not sure how the singer feels about what he's singing about, or how the composer feels about it. Is this supposed to be a comic song? Is it a bitter lament of our modern age? What, exactly? I'm not convinced you know either. Singing in a higher register would help because it would force you to act the part a bit more, whatever that part is. I only give all these nitpicks because it's good work with a ton a potential.
5. Bonfire of the Manatees
Frankly, I'm not sure why this one is still on my playlist. I get very tired of those same two chords going back and forth, and the vocals are too ragged. Still, there are some nice guitar licks in there, and, well, there's something about it that kept it on the list after this whole week. not sure what it is.
6-21. Everyone else
Lots of different reasons why the rest got eliminated over the course of the week. MMMC bad a lousy attitude, Darkest Daves are too adolescent, Steve Durand didn't get long enough to clean up his parts, etc., etc.

Review Time!
Bonfire of the Manatees - I like the intro, but it seems like the panning makes it feel too busy once the vocals get in. Definitely a cool sound to this one though. I love the sound of your voice, especially in the higher range. The drum machine isn't anything great ... if you're going to use one, try mixing it up a bit with the drums. Other than that, it's a pretty cool song with cool structure. (7/10)
The Booty Chesterfield Trio, featuring Caravan Ray - Cool sound ... I personally don't love the vocals, but the tune and lyrics are great stuff ... don't really know what to say about it. (7.5/10)
Chin Music - This did nothing for me. I can't even tell what's going on. You get 2 points for sending in a song. (2/10)
Damien Verrett - I really like the style and the guitar work here. Your voice kind of reminds me of Frankie Big Face, but a bit lower. I like the da da da da da part right before "Ignorance is Bliss" with flutes. Cool Song. You definitely could work on vocals a bit though. (7/10)
The Darkest Daves - People are calling this juvenile. I'm still a kid, so I'm allowed to like it. (8/10)
Delirimouse - I like the guitars, but not the vocals so much ... they seem a bit off to me. The sliding guitar part is really cool. Try not to drag out the instrumental part for too long. (7/10)
@eclectic spOOns - Your music is definitely getting more interesting to listen to. I guess the whole fake voice is your style, but it doesn't really do anything for me personally. The instrumental sections with the synth horns is really cool. (8/10)
Eddie Lance - I like the fight fading into a serene piano section. There's a lot of mood building up there, and you really caught it at the right moment. Dang. That's what you did the whole time. I wish you had taken that and gone into a piano ballad with real smooth vocals or something. After the awesome start, it was disappointing. (5/10)
Hillbilly - Something you'd sing at a campfire after a long day of shootin' possums and drinkin' moonshine. But really, I really like the feel of the guitar ... good writing. Your voice sounds a bit phlegmy, but I still really like the vocal harmonies and stuff you pulled out. I sort of wish it had built up a bit more, but I like it as is. Great job. (9/10)
Jolly Roger - I like this song. Not the mix. Vocal performance, as usual is pretty poor, but you know ... I think I'm slowly improving ... maybe I'll spend longer than 3 days on the next one. Oh yeah. That terrible guitar solo took me 2 hours to record, and that was the best take. Blech.
Melvin - I'm pretty much sure you know that I like all your stuff. I'm not sure if this vocal is your best, but once again, great stuff from the great Melvin. It's catchy too. (9/10)
Milk Machine - I really like the tune of this one. Vocals seem a bit less than convinced though. Maybe that's just to go with the style. Have you tried singing in a higher range? Good job though. (8/10)
MMMC - Definitely some of the better rap I've heard on Songfight. Interesting lyrics too though. Rap really isn't my thing though, so I can't give any real advice. (7/10)
Paco del Stinko - You're quickly becoming one of my favorites. I really love that guitar intro. Really cool. Your songs just have such a good feel to them. Great tune too. (9/10)
Rone Rivendale - I still think you're improving. (5/10)
Ross Durand - Voice reminds me a bit of Johnny Cash. Cool stuff. I love the not-so-apparent humour. I didn't catch it at first, but there's some funny ironic stuff in there. (9/10)
The Seamus Collective - I heard this is a "supergroup". Who's involved with this? This song is definitely the most polished one in the fight so far. Probably my vote. (10/10)
The Semolina Pilchards - Sounds messy. I can definitely feel a good song in there, but it's not leaping out at me. I like the chorus way more than the verses. Try mixing your harmonies a bit lower when they're not quite in sync with the lead vocals. Your voice is pretty good though. (6/10)
Steve Durand - So lively. I really like it. You put out a lot of stuff like this right? With the horns and stuff? I actually like this song a lot. I wish your voice was a bit stronger, but I guess it fits the song great in this occasion. (9.5/10)
Team Seahorse - The song really reminds me of something my drum teacher's band would come out with. Having a lot of different voices is cool. I like the girl voice the most ... it seems more on par. It's a pretty catchy song. I actually dig this one lots. (9.5/10)
Wormsweater - I'm not quite sure what all the hype about this is. It's really slow starting. I guess it's better once it's built up a bit. It'll be cool to see what you guys come up with in the next while though. (5/10)
Things I'll remember about this fight - Catchy tunes, mostly not great vocals and lots of lines about being happy. Top songs - Team Seahorse , Steve Durand and Seamus Collective. Seamus gets my vote.

I believe I mentioned last fight that The Daves are nothing if not derivative of what we love, and puerile. I believe weve managed to keep this up. Although, our Control Yourself song is a bit more serious, and doesnt contain any references to homosexuality, semen, or friends only spooning.
Thanks to everyone who reviewed our song. General feedback seems goodish. If anyone can run us through the basics of mixing we might even sound better! And thats what everyone wants: a well mixed Daves song so you can hear every missed note, and the exact meanings of all the lyrics
Just for the record, none of the Daves involved in the making of this track is younger than 25.
We just all still giggle at the word 'poo'. I think it shows.

First of all, thanks for all the reviews. I was pleased and surprised at how well my song was received this week. I think I'll strongly consider making a more solid recording (capo?)
I never didi get time for full reviews, I made recording my first priority. but here's a few comments - sorry that I'm leaving some people out:
The guitars in Bonfire - Yeah!
Chin - I love the stuff you're emulating here (you should check out Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music) VOTE ( partly for my love of your source, but you did it well - the dog is a nice touch. Also this reminds me of M. Ward.
Damien Verrett. Reminds me of bright eyes ina good way, but the words didn't suck me in.
Milk Machine - I think I like this song - I want more focus from it, but I think I agree with a previous review that said a different performance might bring it off a little differently - one of my favorites for the form and style.
I like the Paco song.
Seamus collective - infectious- happy to be here.
Seahorses - incredibly hooky. Fun to drive to.
Worm... - I like the bass chords, but hte song is a bit wandery for me.
It was a good fight - those are just some of the things I wanted to say - as always if you want comments - pm me and I'd be happy to say more.
I never didi get time for full reviews, I made recording my first priority. but here's a few comments - sorry that I'm leaving some people out:
The guitars in Bonfire - Yeah!

Quick little reviews by Niveous:
The Darkest Daves- As someone named Ernie, i am highly offended by this tune. Plus, it's so not true. Bert isn't gay, he's into bestiality. "Doing the Pigeon" isn't just a dance, folks. This song made me feel dirty in a bad way.
Chin Music- I swear that I thought this song was another Bert clip. I dislike the vocals a lot and it deters me from listening.
Team Seahorse- I was expecting yacht rock. But it's definitely not but it's very campy. I can picture this being done by the Brady Kids. Quick someone to the photoshop.
Paco Del Stinko- ...Blurreeeeeeee ...Hurreeeeeee. Those high notes are unappealing. The bridge is unexpected and a treat as is the guitar solo. Needs work.
Jolly Roger- Who's ready for the Warped Tour? I know Jolly Roger is. It's pop punk rock but it's enjoyable. Not bad. Currently in the lead.
Rone Rivendale- The chorus is gruesome. And the beat doesn't do much to help the song. You need to find some really good samples.
Semolina Pilchards- This is an interesting tune from Ken and one N Glen. The beginning is terribly weak with all the wind stuff but it gets much better as it goes along. Currently in the lead, maybe even a download.
Bonafire of the Manatees- The guitar is bothering me, mostly because of the choice of rhythm and the chord progessions. The female vocals are fun. And the cymbals are very tinny. Being named after a Simpsons episode is a plus.
MMMC- a 9/11 tune, hmmm. The beat is really thin. Points for the use of the word "clusterfuck". I can't get past this weak beat.
Sp00ns- Trip hop Sp00n style? The robotic vocals are ruining it for me. I think Nataly K has a faster speech pattern.
Wormsweater- Welcome. I expected something far harder from someone with a name like Wormsweater. I could've done without the first minute or so. The recording isn't balanced and it's hurting my ears like it's panned too much to one side. I have to stop listening.
Steve Durand- Bring the big band, muthafucker! That was highly enjoyable. Download and current lead. Great work.
Eddie Lance- Experiments. This one is a fail. Interesting idea but not compelling enough to hold me as a listener.
Milk Machine- The vocals are so flat. I love the accordian but the vocals are killing this for me.
Seamus Collective- Wow. I love the feel of this. The female vocals don't need to be after every line in the verses, it's a bit much. The lyrics are very very good. Hmmm, a download and now I don't know who is getting the vote. Horns are ruling the roost today.
Booty Chesterfield Trio- You need to sell this song to Turbonegro. It has it's moments and it's not terrible but I'm not going to run and shout its praises from the rooftops.
Melvin- Whoa. This may be too pop for my constitution. It's okay. But it's too Fountains of Wayne has sex with Weezer with me. But it is damn catchy, ain't it.
Ross Durand- What happened to the Ross Durand from the Nur Ein? This is mediocre and I know I've heard much better out of him. "Hunky Dory and that's the way I like it", huh.
Derilimouse- I love the guitars on this. It's so late 80's new wave. I think I may download this. The vocals leave something to the imagination but the tune is fun. Bad ending.
Damien Verrett- This is all over the place. The vocals and the guitars feel like they wanna lean in different places. Then the recorder comes in and I'm cringing.
Hillbilly- The beginning of this is really slow. I keep wanting this song to get to the nitty gritty. But it seems to just meander along. It doesn't deliver a big punchy part and it needs one.
Vote goes to Steve Durand. 2nd to Seamus Collective. 3rd to Delirimouse

A bit late, but here are some thoughts
Paco: brash and bombastic in a lo-fi indie way. this is cool but the mood stays similar all the way through and doesn't appeal much to my emo side.
Rone: This actually sounds pretty similar to a lot of the stuff in the charts, but without the superglossy production. in some ways that's possibly the harshest thing anyone could say about a track.
Team Seahorse: ah, and there was I thinking this was some interestingly named new song fighter. but hey, nothing more welcome than a new incarnation of an old one. I like this, I like the smooth sound, and dark sarcasm, with a bit of a stomp in the beat and then a light airy chorus. nice. you've been practicing your jazzy chord changes well.
Sp00ns: Um, this sounds like...porn music? zx spectrum/seinfeld porn music. big hand for Dr Hawking on vocals. This would work better if the drums had a little swing or looseness.
Chin music: Good ol' guthrie-style no-fi folk. but I was really expecting that to be an intro and when it didn't kick in proper I was a tiny bit let down. Sounds good tho' , y'know, authentic. I like the bit near the end where the whole track just drops out for a split second. Good lyrics
Delirimouse: hmmmm, chugs sounded cool in a gnarly way, intro snare made me worried, as soon as the rest of the stuff kicked in and I got the whole fuzzy weird-pop angle I was supremely relieved it wasn't shit metal or something. This has it's charms, I'll definitely be giving it a few more spins. distorted falsetto vox are a bit too detached. cool.
Steeeeve: ooh, interesting, your voice sounds way more suave when you sing lower. Nothing else I can say here I've not said before. smart little song, horns are fantastic. The drum rolls are interesting in a stumbly over-enthusiastic way.
Seamus collectif: ha, nice opening line. Nothing like kicking off with a universal truth and a fair dollop of irony. Really well done all round, all the elements are swell, I hope you take a few more days to tidy up the mix after the fight. Not sure if it's my favourite, but it's up there and it's probably the best song so far. deserves a vote. not that you need any more wins
The semolina pilchards: right, I remember cussing you guys last time I reviewed you so lets see if you learned anything ; ) nice jangly intro, woah, that bass sound is beefy. ah cool, that bit where it goes from the shuffly beat to the straight half-time bit is cool. nice e-bow action, and that quiet chugging guiar in the background really adds to it. Song's not blowing me away, but all the instrumentation and dynamics are great. good outro too, I love the rhythm but I like it mainly cos you use some nice sounding chords to go out on, a bit of a payoff for paying attention, thanks. nice one.
Hillbilly: Guitar tone is cool, and this goes along quite nicely, but I'm sure I've heard this chord progression a few times before. some vocal inflections sound a bit forced, and put me off slightly. it's alright, as far as gng goes.
Jolly Roger: I quite enjoyed listening to this. Not sure why, it has it's flaws obviously and it's hardly the height of originality, but I fell like it captures a mood quite well, even if that mood is only the "jolly roger messing about in his room" type, but i like that kind of thing, like Cap'n jazz and stuff, and this does it in a good way, as opposed to a bad one, which happens a lot. I like the sincerity, and it's got a strong melody but it's all the little details which make it, even if you didn't pull them off quite how you wanted.
Damien: ah cool, man. I was listening to this and thinking "who is this?" in spite of the fact I clicked on the Damien verrett link 60 seconds previously. You obviously like a lot of the stuff I've been listening to. and you pull it off well, like a cross between Mark Mothersbaugh and Islands. I think you're better than Jordan Seavers cos you don't use the same idea every week. That makes me think, I'm gonna keep this, but you should get some more Forestry Fires going.
Wormsweater: ah, one of those "I put a microphone in a room and then went to do the ironing" songs. ah no, there it is. This is actually really nice. That bit where the drums come back in really far away is cool. Doesn't really go anywhere, but it does it in a nice winding way. thumbs up and stick around.
...this is why I've not done any reviews lately, (deep breaths) damn, onward!
Bonfire of the manatees: didn't sound like it was gonna be that interesting, but it builds up quite well. the bass is a bit loud (or boomy or something). The jerky drums are okay to start with but they really need to build up a bit of flow and momentum as the song develops, as it is it sounds a bit boring in a copy and paste kinda way.
Booty Chesterfield feat. Ray: This is the one song of the fight which I could imagine hearing on the radio (in it's present state that is). Well formed and hooky. damn, it's a badass band fronted by Ray, what more does the world want?
Eddie Lance: I'm going back to my mothers. Ha. This is a really interesting angle on the title, definitely breaks things up a bit and for that I'm grateful. The playing is really good, in fact for what it is this whole recording is pretty seamless. nice
Darkest Daves: err, I wasn't listening to that. big and fuzzy, drums don't really do anything. that kills it for me. you could have the same chord playing for 5 minutes as long as the drums were interesting, but this can't hold my attention. funny samples, and some interesting noises, but not enough for me.
Melvin: I miss reviewing melvin songs, you can never tell when you're gonna get uber-hooks or some perfect slice of otherness. This appears to be the former, and I'm glad you've enrolled the synth, it may sound cheesy but I'm in the mood for that right now. Maybe this isn't the best thing to say, but whoever it was that didn't sign Heater was a total sucker, you'd have made them a fucking tonne of cash. We should do another Balance Lost/Balance Regained track.
Ross Durand: Some of this is lost on me, cos I love percussion, but there one or two chord changes in there which made my ears pick up.
MMMC: Yo Rone! listen to this! it's got exactly the same elements and yet somehow (it must be magic!) it has things like rhythm, dynamics, and a tune. shit the bed, can it really be. k, sorry about that. This is pretty well done, good lyrics well delivered. I would've like to hear more in the way of instruments, the minimalist approach is fine but i think the main synth you used is a bit weak. otherwise cool.
Milk Machine: This song is okay, I'm too tired of reviewing and this song isn't doing enough for me to say anything more than this. cool key sounds.
faves: Seamus collective, Team Seahorse, semolina pilchards, Damien Verrett

That is a brilliant idea, that I will try to make happen somehow... I just need to learn how to draw, then how to animate... it may take a while...Team Seahorse:
Really well written song and great ensemble performance. You sound like you should be on television as cartoon characters who all live together in a big house on the Californian coast and solve crimes – then, at the end of each episode you sing a jaunty pop song. I think some sort of talking seahorse mascot would be appropriate. One who could do trumpet solos through his proboscis.
On a different topic, I'm confused by all the yacht rock comments in the Team Seahorse reviews. What's the origin of the association between that song and yacht rock?
Lunkhead, I don't think I get it either, but it must be the changes in the "much better if I became unaware" part, which for me doesn't define the song but it does bring lots of points to it.
Damn, dudes, I knew the Seamus Collective song would push all those buttons, but I didn't expect it to become such a sweetheart in this thread since it was such a strong fight. There may be pressure on our next fight.
Anyway, I just came back to pick up any reviews from the last week and to say 1) Some of these songs have been playing non-stop in my head all week, and I haven't even heard this fight since last weekend. (Not least, Steve, Booty, Paco (My mom said she likes "Paco Del Stinky".), Damien; and whenever I think of the spoons song, it launches me right into a Cibo Matto song) B) The one I keep going back to to discover more is MMMC, and III) I apologize to Rone for singling him out like that. Yeah, I know: Song FIGHT! But keep fighting, Rone. I'm still getting better at reviewing.
And finally roll call:
Ross -- guitar/sing/f-horn/trumpet/dulcimer
Ken -- drums/mix
Seamus -- guitar/sing
Evil-E -- bass/lead guitar
Shelley Boucher -- female
