It's funny, but as I read this thread more, I realize that I have no concept of what I consider "top 5"... but I do think that we're approaching this like some kind of nomination list, confined to some weird "historical" context that we're creating based on our opinions.

Glad to see you include "Only Fools and Horses" - I've had a lot of Pom friends who think that is hilarious - I don't. And Gimme..., My Hero and Keeping Up Appearances I agree are truly awful.

Bit harsh on Vicar of Dibley - I've always found that harmless and quite amusing. Likewise Mr Bean and Thin Blue Line - anything with Rowan Atkinson is fine by me.

Coupling is an interesting one. Is it true that was made as an English copy of Friends? Reversing the normal trend. I've only seen it a few times, but it didn't seem too bad. Better than Friends anyway.

Are You Being Served and 'Allo 'Allo however belong in their own list - the "Classic British Comedy - So Bad It's Good" list along with Carry On movies and Benny Hill.

I don't recall Fisting My Mom - was that the one with Penelope Keith and Geoffry Palmer? I'm sure Judie Dench would have been involved somewhere.

You're sketch comedy shows I find vary wildly between excellent and woeful (what was the one with the "Staring Competition" sketches? - that was good). Those type of shows though are often aimed at local topical events and people - hence I prefer our Aust. ones.

And I've just remembered my favourite English show of all time, though you couldn't really describe it as a sitcom. "People Like Us" with Chris Langham as the interviewer Roy Mallard - that's a classic

I sadly grew up without cable and had to settle for what Britcoms PBS in Austin would air (although BBC America seems solely devoted to "Trading Spaces"-like shows, so it's pretty worthless). They were frustratingly random in their selections. They showed some episodes of "Chef" and I loved it, then they stopped.

I see "Are You Being Served" as a non-offensive, basically enjoyable show but not really great. "Keeping Up Appearances" was funny for the first 2 or 3 episodes I saw, then I got really sick of it. It's a ONE JOKE SHOW for god's sake.

"The Thin Blue Line" I rank a bit above AYBS. Mr. Bean can be really funny and wonderfully depressing (like his new year's party).

I liked "The Vicar of Dibbly" cause I love Dawn French, she was in a show they showed a few episodes of on PBS called "Murder Most Foul" which was hilarious and gruesome.

So true, that show was AMAZINGLY well written. Me and H.Bear. watched it a mess of times recently, but when they started showing the newer ones, with the american woman in the kitchen, the new owner, and Gareth's ugly tall hair, we had to stop watching. It was just NOT as good. It was less good. The goodness was lessened. It had been downgraded regarding it's goodity.

i agree that was one of the best things i've ever seen on television, but i doubt it belongs in a discussion of sitcoms.

I hated One Foot in the Grave, but thought it was mighty cool when Judi Dench and the other dude were cast together in some of the Bond films.

Chef did indeed get lame once they started making changes to the show. Keeping up Appearances is really lame, but for some reason I still like it.

Are you being served? is a great show, as far as I'm concerned. John Inman is probably my favorite TV gay character, if I had to make such a decision.

This is obviously the fake one. The real show was called Fisting my Mum. The English would never spell it Mom.
