The Hell Yeahs – I LOVE IT! I am really punkish to my core. I wish I had a live drummer for my songs
We do too.
Also, JACK! We use the same mic!
yeah, your stuff sounds great, but what's up with the lack of much of anything above 3khz in your mixes? I've listened to a few of the hell yeahs mixes, and they all suffer this way (although good toons). Think you may have a monitor bias or something you should look into....
AND... you really had a bunch of UNCONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM in your posts. Love the clique, keep it up. Rule the forum.

Yeah.
First- Monitor bias - boy howdy. I do, indeed, tend to favor the mud. I pretty much just don't like treble. I mean, sure, my speakers may account for some of my mix, but honestly, I just don't care for high end. Check out any of the songs in the Abominominous archive for proof of that.
And: Sorry I didn't really go for your tune, dude. I honestly felt there was a strong probability that you and matt's rusty red wagon were the same dude. I mean, I like rock, and whatnot, but that riff was pretty damn textbook, and wuh-hay repetitive. To the point that I, in fact, thought it was a joke. Factor in the 4:20's, and, you know... Bah.
I'm not doing this to help people become better songwriters, so I hope you'll excuse my lack of "Here's whatcha oughtta..."
As far as the "clique" goes, and "ruling the forum".......

... welcome to Songfight?
so i accidentally downloaded both fights into the same folder, and i'm too lazy to separate them so -- sorry but you've got a longer list to scan through to find your name. deal.
15-16 puzzle - the recording and mixing both sound rather well-done here. vocals are nicely upfront and sound pretty good, and the guitar is pleasantly almost-in-tune. the second vocal part and the scat solo thingy are really cool. a nice start to the fights.
andy balham f. kapitano - the vocals here are way mufflier... music starts out pretty good -- probably some mixing issues marring total enjoyment of this but all the parts sound like they are pretty well-done. i wish the lyrics were a little clearer, and the song kind of ends just when i'm really starting to get into it.
big matt hyatt & rusty red ryders - hm, the electronic chicken noises are kind of frightening. vocals aren't really bad, but not very good either, and they don't seem to have been recorded terribly well. funny that you say "to make a long story short" when three minutes of the song remain. and, as this goes on, the vocals seem to get kind of worse. having trouble following the lyrics, which is a shame because they seem to be telling some kind of story that would probably add some kind of interest to the song.
creep - the "blister in the sun" sounding bassline and the tinkly glockenspiel thing are pretty cute. vocals could stand to be a bit clearer, but overall this is a nice little happy tune.
deshead - nice and loud. the shouty vocals are pretty cool too. sorry i don't really have more to say, but i'm realising that it's midnight and i've still got twenty more songs to go and i'm probably going to get tired of reviewing long before then. guitar solo is appropriately rockin'.
edge of la - kind of poppy and bouncy sounding, but then the reverby backing vocals and stuff make it just a little bit strange enough to still sound fresh and interesting. lyrics are pretty repetitive, but even at four minutes, it doesn't seem overly long.
gareth duncan - the guitar playing is pretty decent, but seems a little bit louder than it needs to be in comparison to the singing. more repetitiveness at the end here.
hillbilly - some tasty guitar-pickin', nicely subdued and understated. here again, vox are a tad on the quiet side, but fairly well-done. nice lil mellow tune going on, good job.
johnsonic - wait a minute, aren't you the dude that was complaining about the lack of high-end in the hell yeahs' song? this is like bass city! not that i'm complaining, though. i usually love me some stoner rock and this is a pretty decent approximation.
kamakura - i like the sound of the vocals but it seems like you're singing really quietly, and this would probably sound much better if you were really belting it out. were the drums played live? it seems like there are some timing issues somewhere, and i want to blame the drums but if they were programmed it must be something else.
king arthur - you always seem to take these titles in creative directions that nobody else thinks of, and this was no exception. i'm just not sure how the carribbean feel with the steel drums and stuff fits with the ice-skating theme? apart from that, the guitars and everything else sound pretty good, and the playful manner you're using to deliver the story works pretty well at poking fun at the amount of serious attention the story got in the news at the time. (assuming that's your intent, based on the "presidential debates" comment).
leaf 62 - musically this is pretty great, especially the drumming, and i'm digging the bassline a bunch. i just wish the singing was a little bit ballsier to match the music a little more.
loose laces - some typically awesome mob01d singing, fantastic lyrics, and better-than-normal music (i like the blend of distorty spooky noises with the cute synthy stuff a whole lot!).
mediteraniem - i like the guitar leads here, and the rest of the music is pretty engaging too, really drawing my attention. which is a good thing because the singing itself isn't very notable. the occasional backing vocal bits are kinda decent, but for the most part, the vocals are mediocre at best.
pigpen - the samples you use could be kind of cool if it was put together better, and also this is way way way way way too repetitive -- it's like the same five seconds of music a zillion times in a row. the flow of the rapping is, well, rather lacking. hard to believe this is the same person who did "shaving in the dark" which i liked quite a bit. there really isn't much to like here.
pipe fist - kind of cool and creepy... although this is another case where it sounds like you're telling a story that would be interesting if i could hear it clearly enough to really follow what is being said. the switch from verse to chorus is a little strange, rhythmically, like it just doesn't quite work. but besides that, i like the music here a lot, and the vocals sound like they're rather good if only they were more distinct in the mix.
poor june - i think i already reviewed this song for you in IRC... that seems like so long ago, though. anyway my opinion probably hasn't changed much -- the piano playing is really good but i wish the tinkly, moving right-hand part was louder relative to the comparatively plodding left-hand part. and the singing is nice and sounds better (recording-wise) than some of your stuff i've heard in the past, but nevertheless, i'd really like to see what you'd be capable of with a real mic and recording setup.
sugarpot gamelan - sounds like something i'd expect to hear on the "oldies" station -- kind of dave clark five-ish. except the vocals which are practically inaudible over the music. as far as i can tell, you're a pretty good singer, but i can't really be sure because i am just barely hearing you!
test tube steak - oh man, why would someone take such a great cello-and-tinklebell intro, and ruin it with such garbage synth-vocals? the music here is delightful, but the vocals make me want to vomit. seriously.
the bloody hams - i'm not so sure about the backing vocals in some places, but the lead vox sound pretty great, and all the music is wonderful, i love the blend of acoustic guitar and tremoloey synth goodness. good stuff all around.
the def author - oh man, so hilarious. this is really good stuff, even by def author standards.
the hell yeahs - the vocals get a little bit buried here sometimes simply because there is so much happening in this song, particularly during the choruses. but busy-ness aside, it's sounding pretty cool.
the likely lads - the singing is rather nice, and pretty clear compared to most of the songs here. that's all i got, sorry.
tiggernaut - you scared my cat away!
wreckdom - organ is a bit too loud... the recording and mixing in general is not too great here -- lots of overloading and kind of painful on the ears. but beyond that, this kind of resembles octothorpe in a way
alrighty, so that's that. i'm also too lazy to do separate top five lists so here's an overall top ten. the order is somewhat random though.

Andy Balham feat. Kapitano
I'm really pleased with how this turned out. My playing on the verse could be tighter and the solo's a bit cliched, but I found myself humming it all week long so a tip of the hat to Mr Kapitano for the melody.
The Bloody Hams
I really like the flow and atmosphere of the verses, but the chorus doesn't quite deliver for me. The flute solo is a nice touch and works well. Good song, could have been great with a killer chorus.
The Def Author
A great example of what can be done with the genre. Good idea, good hook, good lyrics and good flow. The ad samples and duck calls all add to this top slice of nerdcore.
Deshead
This sounds pretty familiar, but in a good way. Again I favour the verse to the chorus, which is always a bit of a letdown. The overall production quality is pretty damn fine and the solo's pretty good too. Another case of good, not quite great.
Edge of LA
The backing sounds a little far back and could do with a bit of separation, but in contrast to some of the previous songs this has a chorus that really is the high point of the song. I would have hoped from more from the middle eight, but kudos on the bass playing. Contender.
Gareth Duncan
Such sparse instrumentation always puts the spotlight on the vocalist and you do a good job, with only the occasional wobbly spot. It's well put together and well executed, but not really grabbing me.
The Hell Yeahs
A most welcome return. You pull of the little stops well and you have more variation in the first minute than a lot of songs on here have in four. Feels much longer that its length, but in the best possible way. Definite contender.
Hillbilly
I would prefer a single-tracked vocal on something in this style. Some nice guitar work going on there, fits the mood well. Oh I would have liked this so much better with a single vocal, still a good song though.
Johnsonic
The lyrics are hard to make out and by a minute and half the same basic riff has got a little dull. The section at one forty-five is nice though, but now it's going on a bit too long. This could do with some severe pruning and a chorus, but not a bad listen.
Kamakura
I really like your voice, particularly when it breaks up. This has a real 'lighters in the air' feel, so ideal for finishing gigs with. Some odd sound artefacts in there detract a little and I would like a solo, but somthing about it grabs me. Well done.
At this point I have to say that I found myself very impressed by the quality of all the previous ten songs. Up to this point, there hadn't been a single one I hadn't disliked so a tip of the hat to all. Now to our last three...
Big Matt Hyatt and his Rusty Red Ryders
I generally don't mind the talking blues, but this tends more towards the mumbling blues.
PiGPEN
An obvious idea, poorly executed. Listen to Def Author twenty time for penance.
Tiggernaut
Well done, you've used the internet.

Reviews by Heather from the Hell Yeahs (who has been either working, busy with the little dude or sleeping… sorry for the late and hasty reviews)
Andy Ballham featuring Kapitano The line “acid to ashes, dust to rust” reminded me instantly of a lyric from ‘the Killing Jar’ by Siouxie and the Banshees, and that is good. I think the vocals and guitars should have been louder, or something. Voice a little off at times, but that’s ok. Over all, pretty good.
The Bloody Hams I must say, guys, when I read who was in the Bloody Hams, I was intimidated. I really love how collaborations can come together like this. You guys are separated by several hundred miles over two countries but this sounds like you’re all in the same room. I can hear Jack and Bolio (?) doing the backing vocals, who’s that singing “Piece of My Heat”, Leaf? , Puce? The lyrics work well with the vocal style and are way better now than when I read them first in the lyric archive. Good!
Def Author I was never allowed to play video games when I was young, but I’ve learned to appreciate them thanks to Phil. Again, when I saw that you were in the fight, Glenn, I knew you’d be tough competition.
I don’t know anything about Duck Hunt, but I thought that the sample about the “sexy duck call” was hilarious. Good rapping.
Deshead While this song is impressive in it’s production, it sounds rather manufactured to me. If you’ve heard any Hell Yeahs tunes you’d know that we’re partial to a different sound. Some of those harmonies seem to be trying too hard to be harmonious. I figure I’m writing non-positive things to you because you’ve gotten so many good reviews and you can handle it, but I guess it’s really that I’m taken aback by how ‘better than average’ this fight has been and my competitive side is showing through.
Edge of LA This sounds like the 80’s. Right away I don’t like the lyrics. They just seem like the most obvious take on the title. I’m just curious if this your typical style? I guess I’d like to hear more of your stuff in a different style, maybe that “punkish to the core” one, ‘cause this isn’t really doing much for me. It’s way too long.
Gareth Duncan You are a good singer and there really isn’t much that bothers me about this song. The lyrics don’t totally appeal to me, a little bit blah, but otherwise I like the one. Good guitar playing too.
The Hell Yeahs
Hillbilly I know that you’ve heard this before, but the vocals are too quiet and when I can make them out, they sometimes sound flat, or off. The guitar playing is pretty.
Johnsonic I don’t think I like this very much, but I can’t tell. It seems really crahsy “chhhhhhhhh”. You’re the one who likes treble so much, right? Well, I just don’t have much to say. Call it too tired, or too close to the end of the fight, but I just wanted the song to be over. The break, and the song in general are too long, I don’t know how it relates to the title…
Kamakura I’m quite put off by the lyrics, but other than that, the singing is ok, if a bit creepy. The rest of the music didn’t stand out much, might need to be brought out more.
Matt Hyatt, etc. Chicken noise annoying, you’re not really singing. What the hell. This is down right bad. How can this be over 4 minutes long? I’m only 1minute into it and I have to stop.
PiGPEN Your timing is bad and your pronunciation is forced, it seems obvious that you don’t really talk that way. Gun=Heat is kinda boring. I don’t enjoy this
Tiggernaut This is terrible. It’s obvious that you want attention and you’re not getting mine. 15 seconds, that’s all I could take.

I must say first off that there is nothing true in the lyrics. Phil wrote them and I think he did a fabulous job. It’s an awesome story, so crimey! It was great to have so much time to put into this one. But, it seems like the more we put into a song, the less liked it is. It’s my favorite Hell Yeahs song so far.Phil. it's actually ken singing the main vocals, me singing the chorus, and ken singing "piece of my heat". no bolio vocals, just me and ken. thanks heather!Heather. Redmon. wrote:Reviews by Heather from the Hell Yeahs (who has been either working, busy with the little dude or sleeping… sorry for the late and hasty reviews)
Good!

The ones I saved:
1) Deshead
Nice catchy song. Good singing and the harmonies really add to the hook. Great change into the chorus. Cool rock riff but the guitars could do with being beefier. The breakdown near the end fits really well. I love this song, defintely my favourite of this week.
2) The Def Author
Brilliant. Using the first two notes of the chorus riff at the start of the verse ties the song together nicely. The other little bass fills and noises are arranged well and fill out the song. The rapping's great too. It does get a bit repetitive but I still like it.
3) The Bloody Hams
Low vocals can be hard to make out, especially at the end of the lines. Atmospheric noises are used well to fill out the track, without them it would sound too sparse, with them it sounds professional. Nice use of false endings before and after the solo. Flute/recorder was a good choice of intrument as it helps to change the sound of the track, which adds interest. A couple of the notes sound slightly off key to me though. Good build up into the piece of my heat line.
The ones I didn't (in no particular order):
The Hell Yeahs
I don't like the doubling of the vocals but other than that the singing is good. The distorted guitar riff is well played, I don't think the sound is thick enough though. The drums are too busy and sound a bit mechanical. Some nice changes and dynamics used throughout. Not bad, I almost saved this one.
Andy Balham featuring Kapitano
Chorus is the strongest bit, reminds me of David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes. Nice solo, could do with being brought forward, very Oasis Live Forever. Bass is slightly lost, needs equing to seperate it more. Hi-hat/cymbal on the drums doesn't come through very well other than that the druming is good. Vocals sound muddy, double tracking is pretty tight though. Less distorted guitar on the left, playing the stabbing chords, works well.
Johnsonic
Lacking a bit of high end on the guitar and vocals. The singing isn't bad but it doesn't really move me. The verse goes on too long without a break. Not really my thing. The bridge is the best bit and I like the atmospheric noises and the floaty feeling.
Kamakura
You could do with using a pop shield as there is an explosive pop at the start. The guitars sound very muddy. I can't get into this as it feels a bit too restrained.
Hillbilly
The levels on this are very low, you should normalise it before converting to mp3. The acoustic guitar sounds is very plectrummy, it could do with being fuller. Nice electric guitar playing. Don't like the doubled vocals.
Big Matt Hyatt and His Rusty Red Ryders
Nice guitar tone but the vocals are poorly recorded.
Edge Of LA
Not sure the synths work that well with the distorted guitar. The harmonies are distracting, they don't sound tight enough. The 'I got something more section' is catchy. Not bad but didn't really grab me.
Tiggernaut
More horror film scene music than song. Weird but not that interesting.
PiGPEN
The vocal delivery needs more work, as it is it doesn't make me want to listen to the lyrics.
Cheers,
Gareth.

1: johnsonic, balham, def author, bloody hams, hell yeahs
2: deshead, kamakura, gareth, edge, hillbilly
i like everything about def author except that one sound at :51 like a truck backing up. too loud!
edge of la - this needs to be more edgy, in the guitar, i think. not "the edge" as in u2, but edgy, you know? which is funny because edge is in your band name.
ok, i voted def author.

Piece of my Heat reviews-
Firstly let me apologise PROFUSELY for being so damn late with these reviews… Um… No real excuse.
I burn the whole fight to CD and listen to it on the way to and from work, so thanks to all for the entertainment.
Andy Balham Featuring Kapitano
I really like this. It reminds me of early Bowie / Marc Bolan. Kapitano’s voice is getting really good. And overerall the song feels complete and works well. The mix could be improved, but then hey, whose couldn’t?
Bloody Hams
This is a track the could be so damn good it’s painful. I’m one of those in the stadium burning my fingers on a lighter. The flute didn’t seem to cut enough.
The Def Author
Not my genre, but nonetheless I really like this. I’ve laughed every day on the way to work, so thanks!
Deshead
Damn good. You remind me of Steve Miller.
Edge of LA
This reminds me of the Moody Blues. Another track that came really close to being great, but the mix missed clarity, and seemed very middley.
Gareth Duncan
Another UK songfighter is a good thing, and with such a good song too.
The Hell Yeahs.
I love it. You two, in your various guises, should at least have one major record company after you… Huge respect for the drummer/drum programmer.
Hillbilly
This seemed really quiet. I like this an awful lot.
Johnsonic
Great guitar riff. You’re on the bill with the Bloody Hams. Excellent!
Kamakura
So my excuse is… Always time. It was all live, and you can hear it. My bad.
Matt Hyatt and his rusty red riders.
Not for me, though it seems ok at the beginning, it seems to go downhill.... And that chicken noise is very, very, very annoying.
Pigpen
Nope. Though I like your cartoons.
Tiggernaut
No no no. Please no more…
Top three are very hard to pick.
Bloody Hams

Vote to The Hell Yeahs (though I fear not in time)

Thanks, Deshead!
I tried to make a good entertaining track, and it seems to have paid off! Of course, nerdcore rap has a decent following on songfight, thanks to the likes of MC Front.
As far as best song, however, I voted for your entry. I LOVE it! The bridge is ear candy, especially... and it gets stuck in my head a lot.
