2nd February

\m/ Caravan Ray's Rock Pig History \m/
1979: Sex Pistols bass player Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York. There had been a party in the flat to celebrate Vicious' release on $50,000 bail pending his trial for the murder of his former girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, last October. Party guests said Vicious, (real name John Simon Ritchie), had taken heroin at midnight.

FEBRUARY 3rd

<a href="http://www.nilmusic.com/">Nil</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/flood_vi ... mp3">Flood Victim</a>

From the yelled opening, it's evident that something interesting is about to happen in the track. I love the contrast between the fast paced verses and the smoothed out choruses. It sounds amazing, even at the maximum allowed 64kpbs bitrate of songfight yesteryear.

FEBRUARY 4th

<a href="http://www.15-16puzzle.com/">15-16 Puzzle</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/world_of ... mp3">World of Screens</a>

It's funny how you can look through the songfight archives, and immediately relate a title to one specific song in your head, even if it wasn't a songfight winner. This happens a lot to me, and 15-16 puzzle's versions of the titles are often the one that comes to mind first.

I think that Erik is arguably one of the best songwriters that songfight has to offer, although the production on his earlier entries wasn't all that great. The second <a href="http://songfight.net/forums/viewtopic.p ... 45">Secret Hxaro Santa</a> project helped to show how his songwriting can survive many different translations and still sound good.

Some things that happened on February 4th, according to the History Channel's <a href="http://www.historychannel.com/tdih/tdih ... tory">This day in history</a> site:

That's very true. About 15-16, I mean. He writes some of the catchiest hooks around.

In all fairness, When I think of "Postcard", "Crinkle Binkle", or "Run Free", the Frankie Big Face versions of each song are the first ones I relate the titles to.

FEBRUARY 5th

<a href="http://www.85180ad.com/">Charcoal</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/please_t ... p3">Please the pig</a>

Happy 30th Birthday to Ben (aka Charcoal). I actually turned 30 shortly before the Austin Songfight Live. Which is a perfect segue...

As I watched Charcoal play his "Please the pig" for the Austin crowd, my immediate thought was "OH SHIT! I wrote a song about Miss Piggy too!" I tend to think that his lyrics were much more entertaining, however. This was one of the great highlights of the live Please the Pig fight, and it is no wonder that this entry made it into the top 4 by audience approval, along with Frankie, Brother Machine, and myself. (For those who did not know, Brother Machine won the Austin audience vote)

February 5th, eh? I am going to have to play some serious catch up here. I have been sick, and working overnights recently, so this has really fallen by the wayside. I will get caught up, however.

FEBRUARY 7th

<a href="http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... _kahn">Bob Genghis Kahn</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/morescie ... .mp3">What we need more of is science</a>

I didn't know what to think of this song initially. It didn't take long for me to appreciate it, however. The beat is terrific, and so is the rap as far as I am concerned. The accent is just a bonus. Reading the archives of <a href="http://www.achewood.com">Achewood</a> doesn't hurt either, you will knowingly laugh along at key lyrics in this track (like I do) when you have read the entire archives of the comic (like I have). "Six Times" gets me to smile every time, if not laughing aloud (like I just did.)

FEBRUARY 8th

<a href="http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php?key=da_hikk">Da Hikk</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/stepup/d ... .mp3">Step Up</a>

While we are on the track of raps that could be considered novelty, but are expertly done... Da Hikk's track made my jaw drop the first time I heard it. It still makes me smile, and that's good, because it could just as easily make me think that I will never write a funnier rhyme to match it.... or maybe I hadn't considered that yet.... Well THAT sucks! :P

<a href="http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... e">Puce</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/the_pawn ... s.mp3">The Pawnbroker's Stepdaughter</a>

Seeing Puce as part of the Bloody Hams was a treat. I mean, don't get me wrong, the whole damned Seattle show was an absolute blast, but Puce has got some serious freeking charisma as a frontman. He was part of why the Hams were a tough act to follow that night. He also has a great ear for mixing that I would like to steal away from him, and then play dumb when he came around looking for it.... and then I would feel guilty and have to give it back. It would get ugly from there, I am sure.

<a href="http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... yeahs">The Hell Yeahs</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/hold_thi ... .mp3">Hold This For Me</a>

If I am able to attend the next songfight live, and the Hell Yeahs are playing? It is going to be one of the performances I am looking forward to seeing the most. Fast and fun punk music that is performed with competence is such a great time. However, if the Hell Yeahs require a bass player for that performance, I MIGHT just be watching the show from the stage area. I hereby volunteer my services for that very thing.

This song appeals to all of my senses in the way that good music should. I WANT TO HEAR THIS SONG LIVE, LEAF!! I like the stops and starts, but maybe that's because Justin (drummer of the half racks) swears that I have to put in every song myself. This is a freeking great song, Leaf, seriously.

FEBRUARY 14th

<a href="http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... ">Vanadium Pentoxide</a> - <a href="http://www.songfight.org/music/i_love_y ... you.mp3">I LOVE YOU</a>

Think happy thoughts for Valentine's day, but a friend of mine (who would probably not want to be credited for this quote, so I won't say who it is) had a brilliant thing to say on the subject of this holiday...

"I can't stand the fakeness and commercialism of it all. If you really love someone, you don't have to designate a specific day on which to lavish him/her with attention and gifts."

This more or less sums up how I feel about Valentine's day as well.

Getting back to the subject of the song, When I first came up with this 365 idea, this is one of the very first songs I had thought about placing on a specific date. When I first heard this track, I wasn't really all that keen on it... but then it grew on me. I personally think the song is hilarious. Finding out who the secret songfighter is that did this title under an assumed name, was really cool. I actually gained a little more respect for his other work through this track.

Glenn! I'm honored to be on your list!

If you do plan on attending SF live in MN, that would be super cool! We need more out-of-towners in attendance. As far as bass playing goes, I'm not sure what's going on... you might want to PM Phil. I think tviyh has also expressed interest, but I'm sure it can all be worked out. Hope to see you here!

Thanks again for including the Hell Yeahs!
