My Favorites:
Milo Dunderville (f/ Millie & Dave Dunderville) - I loved this entry. It's very catchy & easy to sing along with. The story was something I think most married guys can relate to. Even if they haven't killed their wife, I'm sure most have come close at times. The sax was amazing by the way.

Chris Cogott (f/ Jon Eric) - This was right up my alley. I like up tempo music with a shot of humor. That's one of the reasons I like Song Fu, the songs are generally more humor driven then Song Fight or Nur Ein.

Sid Denison and the Harpooners (f/ Wages, Fluffy, Caravan Harriet and more!) - This does a good job of getting a point across, and even if I don't agree with everything the song has to say it's extremely well done.

I'm glad you mentioned that on the Song Fight Boards, because I knew that, but didn't make the connection while listening to the song.

Berkeley Social Scene (f/ Melvin & Frisbee) - Nice song everyone can relate to...or probably will once they're old enough. Well produced as usual, but not as catchy as some of the other songs this round.

Not Bad:
Naked Philosophy (f/ Fluffy) - I really liked the idea for this song, and the hopeful ending after being mostly pessimistic was cool. However some of the music was a bit painful to listen to. I think this song could be great if it had some polish, but as it is it's just great in theory. *gives a very upright & proper round of applause*

Jon Eric (f/ King Arthur) - I loved this song, and it's a total nerd song. It's a shame it's not about a year, would have been one of my favorites if it met the challenge.

Boop Boop (f/Scott Loving, Joe Crow, Preston Spurlock, the Fools, Churchhill Downs & more!) - Cute little song that I enjoyed a lot. Ending in 97 seconds added some extra cool points, but the fact that the song didn't follow the topic kept it from being a favorite.

Here's how I'd rank than this week:

1. Berkeley Social Scene (f/ Melvin & Frisbee) - I like this. Poppy and catchy. Reminds me of 10,000 Maniacs.

2. Chris Cogott (f/ Jon Eric) - good story. I'm seeing the Weird Al comparisons now. This is pretty good.

3. Billy's Little Trip (f/ Steve Durand) - Pretty good. I like the song. Pretty cool and laid back. Some of the lyrics don't seem to scan right. Steve's horns fit very well.

4. Who Fly (f/ Pots and Pans X & the Pearl House Players) - A little like last weeks - I want to like this, but I'm finding it all a bit messy and hard to get my head around. It improves towards the end when the first verse returns. OK - this could grow on me...not bad.

5. Therman (f/ Maggie & Fraser) - Muddy. Guitar is swamping the vocals. I might find more interest if the production was a bit sparser. The band sounds pretty good though despite that - your two mates are doing a good job.

6. Minty Handy (f/ Molly Handy) - Short and sweet. Maybe too short, too sweet. I'd like to hear a bit more of a complete story. And for some reason, I am finding the lines: "she said she guessed that..." a bit grating

7. Milo Dunderville (f/ Millie & Dave Dunderville) - I don't really get the story. Google shows me you seem to basing this on real events, which is a nice touch. But overall, this is not really grabbing me.

8. Naked Philosophy (f/ Fluffy) - Great idea, though a lot of the lyrics not fitting very well. Acoustic guitar sounds great. Nice idea with the breakdown. Good ideas, suffering slightly in the execution. Chorus is pretty cool.

9. Boop Boop (f/Scott Loving, Joe Crow, Preston Spurlock, the Fools, Churchhill Downs and more!) - Not bad, but not particularly memorable

10. Jon Eric (f/ King Arthur) - Competent, but a bit pointless. Ideally - every song should be about either sex or death. Not radioactive metallic elements.

11. DJ Ranger Den (f/ Alyssa Day) - Sounds like you had some technical issues which is a shame. As it is, it seems a little meandering with no hook to grab hold of. With 2 clear vocals it may have been something very good

12. The Real Sign (f/ The Zaz) - I don't really understand what is going on here. I'll have to plead genre bias.


Sid Denison is totally unsure where he may end up amongst all that. He is really not feeling overly confident at all. With hindsight he should have scrapped the Kevin Rudd sound bite and replaced it with a sung chorus based on Confucius' saying "a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step". I actually recorded that but cut it at the last minute to keep the song under 4 minutes. I cut the wrong bit.

The title was '97. The challenge was to use a guest. It is pretty obvious the song was "based on the title posted" as specified in the Songfight! FAQ. "'97" doesn't have to refer to a year - just provide the basis for a song.

If the title of a song is going to be " '97 " then I sort of expect it to have something to do with the year. If the title was just "97" I'd have put it up there in my top songs. OR if Berkelium was discovered in '97 or something. But I read that page Jon linked to, (understood very little of it :p ), and didn't see even a minor connection to a year. (I get the atomic # connection though)

I get that Song Fight/Nur Ein doesn't force you to use the title IN the song, or make such a direct connection to the title. However I like seeing people make that connection, and it does influence me when voting on Song Fight or just picking my favorites fo Nur Ein. Hell I liked the song, and it's not like I can vote on it, so isn't that enough?

Maybe I should have said, it's a shame it didn't connect with the year '97. Instead of saying it didn't meet the challenge, but it wouldn't have changed where I would have ranked it.

Glenn T. Seaborg was part of the team to first produce Berkelium. In 1997, he became the first living chemist to have an element named after him, Seaborgium. The connection is obvious.

There is no casual listening to Bjork.
The obsession with Homogenic began in October of 1997 but lasted beyond the turn of the year.

Listen, you have stumbled on to something, though it may be different for Erin, if it were me it would be :

"When i hear Joga, it sends me through time", but that even though more true for me does not sound anywhere near as good as "all is full of love". It sounds like Yoga, which would be all too confusing.
It's like S & G saying "where have you gone Joe DiMaggio...", they meant Babe Ruth, but that didn't play as well as Joe DiMaggio.

Anyway, it's Erin, Allis Full of Love could very well be the song for her. It's a fantastic song on one of the best albums ever!

I usually try not to bash reviews, but you really don't get it? You didn't hear about the Heaven's Gate cult that all killed themselves, and were all over the news in 1997?
As for the genre, yeah. It doesn't really fit into any. I'm personally okay with that. Then again, I listen to Primus, so maybe it's just me

Thanks for the reviews, though, guys. My feelings aren't even hurt this week by nobody liking it, because I thought that despite the mediocre mixing, we nailed the demonic insanity of the cult in question.
