The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Strange that my song just happened to be 2:22 long for round 2. I wish I could take credit for that phenomenon, but I can't. I'm pretty sure it's the music gods fucking with my head again. I'm to them what a penis is to a chronic masturbater. They treat me like their own personal amusement park.

.....but I'm not complaining.

After some major technical difficulties and screw ups on my part, not discovered until I had left for the week-end, Caleb was able to come up with this at the last minute- very short, very true.

Well we wrote a song this week
It had lyrics and a melody
But now we're up a creek
Cause we had some technical difficulties
So instead of That song
We wrote this song
This isn't the song
We wrote for you.
And for no particular reason
I'll blame it all on Ginger
And everything here is true.

I will post the lyrics to the original song when I get home- and the new recording (too late to compete) if I can figure out what went wrong with my recording equipemnt once I escape from New Jersey this afternoon. Caleb mailed the song to Niveous, but no reply yet.

The only song I didn't get was by Rabid G. All others are in. BUT I am having some kind of weird server issue so I can't get all of them on the website yet. Trying to figure it all out. It's going to be a little while before I can fix the last two songs missing from the pack (Abbott & Hines and Glen Raphael). If they could post links for everyone to listen, it would be greatly appreciated. I will also see about sending those two (1 and a 1/16?) songs to the judges via e-mail.

Everyone seems to have upped the ante this week. More evidence for my weird title -> good songs theory.

Will edit-in comments for the other songs when they're put up.

Abbot - Are you singing with a lisp or did you just de-ess too much? Sorry about your woes. This isn't too bad for being quaint; the chorus is a nice touch. I don't think you should be cut this round.

BLT - I've enjoyed all your songs so far. This one is good too. I wonder what your guitar tone would sound a little beefier - it reminds me of a synthesized Marshall, which isn't my favorite tone.

Boffo yux dudes - The voiceover is a little loud and distracting. I think the music might be good but I really can't turn it up any louder without your face imprinted on my brain.

Bram Tant - I've liked your guitar and bass tones so far. Vocals leave a little to be desired - sounds like you're singing quietly so people can't hear you. You have a good voice - just let loose a little. Your voiceovers are OK but I wouldn't over use them.

DJ Ranger - Piano; check. Violin; check. 3/4; check. The beginning is sung a little too... hammed up/ironic/cynical? At that point, the lyrics seem annoying, but once you go into your nicer tone I can ignore them safely. You could be singing about goatse and I could fall asleep to images of kittens and butterflies.

Frankie Big Face - I like the atmosphere. The piano changeup is good. The drums become grating in that they don't change to match the other instruments, or when they do they feel very awkward. Some harmonies or high violins would go nice at the exciting parts. (11MB?! Learn how to mp3)

Glen Raphael - When the synth comes in, it sounds like two different songs are playing at the same time. It's a cool effect in that I had to make sure I didn't have another application playing music at the same time; for the song not so much. Your bass tone is sexy and you have a sexy bass line there - cut out all the synths that don't match with it. The sax is pretty cool too. The vocals are nice. It's just nothing here is gelling.

John Kloberdanz - Solid performance. Song is kind of boring - common/predictable chord changes, no harmonies/additional layers. Your guitar tone needs lots of help; double-tracking it would help a little.

Jon Eric - I almost didn't believe this was you. Intro reminds me of something! Maybe a Ben Folds song? Or a popular rap song? (EDIT: FOUND IT! an Alanis Morissette song I think) I really like your rapping! A lot!!! Double track it?!?! Chorus is not that great. Song gets kind of... weak at 2:30; much prefer the attitude and energy of the first two verses.

Luke Henley - Listening to your song in mono sounds better; that is a bad sign. You're obviously working with not so great recording equipment. Double track everything. Harmonies are welcome but I think they could be hookier - go higher. Cut song off before the god's design part. Also, thanks for making my song feel slow and sluggish coming after yours, jerk.

Merisan - I love your voice. The lyrics are good too. Slide guitar is a nice touch. A+. Cut lip smacking sound off beginning.

Paco - I wish my fingers moved that fast. Heh, the "I was seven" reminds me of your spin the bottle "I was seventeen". The tension is a bit of a tease - part of me wanted a punch-in-the-balls-chorus at 1:30, but this is tasteful too.

Ross - It's nice to have the tambourine to spice things up. Pretty predictable song formula. I never know what to say about your stuff and you're so consistent at doing it, so shine on. It's pretty catchy too.

Wreckdom - It's kind of catchy, but I liked your previous 2 songs better. I like how you manage to switch things up every song though.

WSA - So many little details, nuances, and changes; love it. Only thing that bugs me is when you sound like Blink182 vocalist.

On the backdoor list, the first song is messed up because of spaces in the name. I'm guessing that's Abott's song. No band name on it. Also, Jon Eric's song isn't working because it has .mp3 twice at the end maybe.

One of the downsides to all digital recording I think. This year I'm trying to use guitar fx I never use, so that's a big part of it, just getting used to new sounds. I'm pretty much just a clean guitar or tube driven guitar kind of guy. I've never cared for anything else. Analog plugs help warm things up, but they seem to really bog down my cpu. I'll figure out something nice sooner or later. I always do. Thanks MG.

Argh, I'm at work and didn't happen to post it to my server last night. It's in my mail spool, so I could send it again to somebody else who has the ability to post if need be. I think mine did have spaces in the title. Um, yep. The title of the MP3 I sent was "Blame It On Ginger - remix 2.mp3"

I've got 3 guitar fx going. The clean rhythm guitar is on the bridge pickups and the distorted rhythm is on the bridge and neck pickups. The lead guitar solo....I forget, but listen now sounds like the bridge only, so you are probably right. But it was one of the new fx too, so I may not have used a cab simulator or something. I kind of just did it on the fly while I was in the moment. I'll have to check later, lol.

Wow. Was I an asshole to you? I don't remember that, but I guess it's possible.

FWIW, I can hear a difference between a low-res MP3 and a hi-res MP3. But maybe I overdid it. This is a longer track than I usually produce so the file size is considerably bigger. I'll try to make it smaller next time.

The song was recorded and mixed (poorly) in Mono. Good ear!
