Frank, I think you have a future as a vocal stand-in for Hugh Jackman. ;)

DEATH TO FALSE METAL!!!!!

WWIMD? Rock yo' face off, with searing dual guitar harmonies, galloping bass, skull-smashing drums, and historically accurate lyrics delivered by an operatic airplane pilot who still looks great in spandex!!!!

And sorry dudes, KISS sucks

(How is Between the Buried and Me more hardcore than metal??? WreckdoMelle takes exception to this slight by Encyclopedia Metallum...)
Ouch... you had to go there with Between the Buried and Me... I'd rather listen to cats being drowned in a bag down by the river, the are defined somewhat as prog rock but I would call them cheesy breakdown hardcore metal, I mean defining yourself as something doesn't mean you actually are said thing. The sub genres in metal amaze me sometimes you can make up bullshit names for stuff and no one calls you on it cause it probably exists somewhere... and according to Eric Encyclopedia Metallum does not mess around with what "they" do not define as metal... so apparently I am not the only one who thinks they are sucky. But I am 100% with you on KISS I probably couldn't hate a band more then them... unless you were the other four letter K band......... KORN

Damn...maybe we should have gone with Bryan Adams after all. That would have been so much better.

Well I walked down the isle at my wedding to Black Sabbath... to each his own... I'm not judging taste here just music. I actually kinda think that's sweet I am just saying for my own personal enjoyment and probably yours too if you know me personally don't play it anywhere near me. Especially Beth... I will punch someone in the dick over that.

All I meant was that some of your singing in your song sounded to me like Hugh Jackman's singing in "Les Miserables". Just an observation, not a compliment or criticism.

Hoo boy, I was feeling pretty confident til I heard the competition, ah well, we've written 5 songs I'm really fond of, and proud of, frankly, and while it's true I'd like to work on a sixth, I can't fault the judges for clipping us, this is a tough one

This is not metal true. I submit the advertising campaign for the Judas Priest "Ram it Down" tour, in which they stated "If there was a jukebox in Hell Judas Priest would be playing on it".
(Best advertising campaign ever: the metal heads thought Hell Satan cool, the non metal heads thought Hell was an undesirable place didn't like the Priest) Hell is cool to a metal head.

Awesome round everyone!
I have never had so much fun singing in my life. I scared my children.
This challenge was sooo fun! going back to the roots of why I became a musician in the 1st place.

I have no idea what the judges will make of this round, every track rocks!

Speaking of metal, by the end of the day I'll own a resonator guitar!

Wreckdom and Glenny, your blanket comments give me hope. It would be fun to move on, but would not be surprised to get cut. Crazy amount of variety and artistic choice. All could easily win or get cut, I think. It will be interesting to see what the judges do.

Great round, everyone! A lot of fun was had, I bet. I know I personally love rockin' the metal for fun. It seems everyone sort of latched on to their favorite metal band and gave tribute.

It seems Ben considers the High School Musical sound track as metal, lol. :P j/k But I liked it. I officially award you the mellowest pop "metal" this round.

Merisan, I never thought I'd ever think Lemmy could be out done, but Erin kicked ass! Love it! But dude, get a de-esser on her track. If you do have one, bump up the sensitivity. A tad essey in the upper range. Great song.

Paco, rock, yo! You really did give early Sabbath a holla on this one, as well as Spinal Tap. Un-dead brain cells Ozzy would approve. :)

MG, I really like your Alice in Chains tribute this Nur Ein. I only say AIC because of your new harmonizing technique, ftw. But dude, the kick, yuck. I expect better from you. Other than that, I like it. ;)

Ross, LOVED the horn addition, good call for originality in a round that was likely to all sound similar. The mix is thin, but I can hear through that and there is great playing, lyrics and vocals, considering.

I'm still listening to them. More comments to come. I'm so glad metal was the challenge. \m/._.\m/

I used to annoy my friends by writing harsh, heavily distorted songs about flowers.
hah, similarly my entry for "Thanks For Coming" was a harsh, heavily distorted song about checking out at the grocery store.

Yeah, I wish I could figure that out. Does not sound thin in the headphones I mix in. i hope that won't hurt me too much. Maybe I'll try remixing a little tonight. It would be nice to get it right.

Honestly, I don't think you need to go to individual tracks to figure it out. It can be remedied in simple stereo track polishing.
But I'm imagining your ear fatigue after mixing this for hours, lol. You're used to clean acoustic guitar and your smokey vox Durand style singing.

..band name alert. Smokey Vox Durand. :P

Carlo Bruno Jr: Your singing reminds me of Tuvan throat singers. I don't really get how your use of the title has any relevance the rest of the lyrics. The music ticks all the boxes.

Paco: In the context of the fight it's a nice change of pace and more expansive, but on it's own there isn't any kind of hook to get stuck in to. Quite long and struggles to hold my interest.

Governing Dynamics: I turned up the volume for this one, partly because it seems to be quiter than the other tracks so far but also cos the riffage is quite satisfying once the drums kick in. Weirdly, when the drums drop out the guitars feel strangely tentative.

Cavedwellers: The guitars in the verse are cool. I feel like the drums need a bit more punch. I knew you'd absolutely rinse the guitar harmonies, you didn't let me down. Even though this passes the 4 minute mark it doesn't seem to drag too much which is nice. Even by the final section it's still good. Intro sounds like WSA's Colourblind.

Ross Durand: Among the most rockingest riffs of the fight. The fact that your recording set up is good really gives this punch as well. You keep the structure concise, I'm never bored and everything is tightly played. The trumpets are an interesting, possible ill-advised addition, but I still commend you for taking the risk. I gotta admit I wasn't expecting it but I'd rate this as one of the best of the fight, if not the best. That said, one underestimates you at their peril. The main riff makes me wish I had long hair.

Manhattan Glutton: Something about this makes me think it sounds like metal as played by the Presidents of The USA. It has a slightly whimsical feel about it. Guitars are huge.

Tydon Docking: It's alright, possibly over-reverbed, it's hard to separate the instruments sometimes. Sounds good when it breaks down though.

Chokehold Princess: Ah see, from a judges persepective I'd have a conundrum here. Clearly the least metal (in musical genre terms at any rate) song so far, but also my favourite. It's nice to hear some full band Krieger. It's songs like this that make it seem like you've been giving a bare minimum of effort so far. Regardless of how it scores it's a keeper.

Merisan:
Sounds like someting off Surfer Rosa, which is awesome but not sure how metal it sounds regardless of how many guitar solos you put in there (which is also the one thing making sounds less Pixies-ish, Joey Santiago would never stick to scales like that). Repeated listens are rewarding.

Frankie Big Face: Finally, some fucking double-kick! Slightly too many syllables per line in the verse, that's probably my only criticism. I particularly like the slowing down of the tempo for some proper chugging.

Wreckdom: This is a weird situation. Of all this years Nur Einers I feel this challenge is playing up to you more than any of us and you definitely take the bit by the teeth, the guitars sound great and it rocks hard. However, by kind of pushing you into what I'm assuming is some kind of comfort zone for you it sounds way less inventive than your other tracks so far in this competition. On a technical note the vocals don't seem to sit in the mix the way the rest of the instruments do, but it's no biggie. Up there.

The title AND challenge for this particular round left a lot of room for interpretation.

Yeah, totes agree. In fact it was more like the challenge was "interpret this single word correctly* without any context".
I just fancied rocking out, looks like most of us did.

I would love to go through but since I have precisely zero time to work on a song next week I might as well get knocked out now. I'm gonna be eliminated anyway. S'been fun though. Might try again next year to see if I can emulate some WSA success by myself. Should probably invest in a new mic...hmmm

*not implying there is any one correct way, just in a way that makes a compelling song.
