Enough With the Rhythmic Master Compression!

Can someone with industry ties please pass this humble request along?

If you are compressing the final mix so the kick drum triggers the volume to quickly drop and then ramp back up over 300 or 400ms: STOP IT!

I hate it.

It hurts my ears.

I get that it kind of simulates being in a club or something but STOP IT.

Yes I am an old, cranky geezer. Want to make something of it?

They call that sidechain compression, and a "pumping" effect, typically applied to the bass, so it kind of comes in every other 8th note. And yeah, it's overdone at this point.

"Hate" is a bit strong... but yeah, that's bothered me for years. Even before I really knew what compression was, I could hardly stand listening to Disco Boys' remix of "For You", but at least it taught me a valuable lesson on what to avoid.

I kind of want to blame Daft Punk for this although I'm sure there were other acts that abused it before them.

I've only used it in a handful of places, where I was specifically making fun of a genre, and people who loved the genera under ridicule loved the tracks and didn't get the joke, so I guess it was too subtle. Or not subtle enough.

Nice example Jast. I don't don't hate it, but I feel like it is overdone here. Is it just me, or does For You sound a lot like Manfred Mann?

Edit: It's not a coincidence. It features them.
