We were discussing wine a while back, I remember that. I made a batch over the holidays that came out great. All gone now, sadly. Except I know one person who still has an unopened bottle, and when she gets back into town, I may have to stop over and convince her to raise the glass.

For now, and since St. Pat's Day, my drink of choice is Guinness. It's surprisingly low in carbohydrates (9.9g/12oz.), and far more satisfying than the low-carb offerings I'd been drinking for the last year or so.

We tried a bunch of wines on my birthday, and the Cavit Pinot Grigio was pretty good, and not too expensive.

Before my diet, my drink of choice was black Sambuca. Mmm.

gin and tonic.

Diet coke.

Alcohol.

Diet coke with alcohol.

But not Bacardi. That makes me vomit.

And whiskey makes me aggressive whilst vodka makes me horny. This is a very important rule, and one not to be confused if you are inviting me to a whiskey and vodka party.

Great cheap wines: Forest Glen. Their merlot is a good solid bottle for like $8. There was a sale on Ravenswood not too long ago. Their Austrailian (New Zeleand?) Syrah was freaking delicious. Meridian pinot Noir is really great. It's usually around $12, but I've seen it on sale for $8.

Now that summer's around the corner, it's vodka-tonic time. Particularly tasty is a Stoli Orange and tonic, or that Absolut Tangerine.

And of course, a good bourbon on the rocks. Or even better, a good mint julep (but damned if I can find a bar that can make one).

for microbrews, all I've got to say is Creemore.

Supercool about this brewery is the real spring water they use. My sister used to live right on a creek fed by this spring, and when driving to her place to visit you would see a silver Creemore tanker trailer parked with a hose disappearing up the mountain side picking up the water.

Very very good beer. Expensive, but good.

as for wine, well if you make it yourself, get one of those magnet jobbies..it'll make it taste like gold.

Give me a handle of Johnnie Walker (any color) and some ice. I'd be content for the rest of my (very short) life.

So I was watching this British detective show on TV one time and somebody made reference to "Bacardi and Pernod." Not knowing whether anything else was implied in that description, i just took a brandy snifter size dealiebob, put in a little ice and went half and half. Wow.

I also like Mountain Dew and Triple Sec, but that tends to be on the sweet side for a lot of people...

Zinfandels and Syrahs in the reds, Rieslings and Muscats and Blue Nun in the whites. Negra Modela beer, Sam Adams if that's not available.

Vanilla Coke, generic grocery store versions are acceptable.

I like lots of drinks. I will list some "new discoveries" from my honeymoon trip to Italy and Germany.
Italy:
Vin Santo - an after-dinner drink, kind of like sherry but tastier and less abrasive.
Limoncello - another after-dinner drink. The farm we stayed at for 3 nights served both of these after dinner every night. Also with wine. Yeah, they drink a lot. Anyway, this is a liqueur made from lemon and boy is it tasty. Sweet.
Tuscan wines - a white variety local to the area is called Vernaccia - it's good, but the reds are much better. Italian reds are great.

Germany:
Weissbeer - I've been drinking this for ages, but Michelle, who is not a beer drinker in the slightest, loved these. It's a beer made with wheat. She's only ordered two or three beers in her life before Germany but there she had 5 of them. She likes the "bready" taste of the wheat beers.
All beers I had in Germany - lots of what we would call microbrews.
Rotling - The only blush wine I've ever really thought was good. Would like to remember exactly which of these I ordered that one night; it was fantastic. M got one the next night that wasn't as good.
Riesling - I like German Rieslings.

Grappa is nasty and makes me retch.

Well, it depends which one you have. Grappa is really a bit like pasta in that there are hundreds of variations - from pure alcohol (that tastes like woody vodka) to sweet ones, more like a fruit liquor. It's the perfect after-dinner palate cleanser, not really a drink in itself.
