Edit: Maui had 2 missing hikers in the past month. Amanda Eller went off trail from Makawao and was lost for 16 days. Kekai Mina hiked the Cross Above Wailuku [and fell?]. He was missing for about a week before they found his body.
I *USED TO* hike alone a lot. It's easy to get caught at sunset. It gets dark FAST. Elevation can change rapidly [ie Kaupo Gap on Hana side - 1000 foot drop.] A'a lava can be sharp. Wet rock can be slippery. Cinder rock can crumble. Cell phones can drain out looking for reception.
I was trying to have a little fun with it, though.
