Major Arcana
by Lichen Throat
Never heard of it until I was 11,
Lowrey’s article in issue 77.
Asked a fortune teller at the county fair
“Where’d you get those cards?”, but she wouldn’t tell me where.
Major arcana, deal me the Empress,
Or if not that, how about some Justice?
A few years later, I went off to college,
Out in the desert, looking for knowledge.
A bookstore in town had decks of the cards,
Watercolor paintings, half the size of postcards.
It came with a booklet on how to tell a fortune.
I practiced for hours on the floor of my dorm room.
Major arcana, dealt me the Tower,
Upside-down Hermit was the next card I flipped over.
You’ve had trouble in your past,
But things are getting better.
There are some challenges in your future,
And you’ll have a romantic interest.
You may have financial issues,
But they won’t last forever.
Don’t worry, don’t worry;
It’ll all work out for the best.
Spend all my days working on the river.
My girl done me right; no need to forgive her.
Travel the country with different decks of cards,
Draw from libraries, discard to graveyards.
See you in Denver, see you in Vancouver,
Two thousand people to outmaneuver.
Major arcana, deal me the Magician,
And then the Hierophant to bring it to fruition.
