These sounds don't mean "horror" to me, I rather like them. But with imagery, almost anything can sound evil.

That's a good one! I found out about this really cool synth the other day. I watched the first episode of the first season of "True Detective" and was wondering if Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had done the score. Turns out it was T-Bone Burnett doing the score _and_ the soundtrack. But! It sounded similar because he and a collaborator had used the Swarmatron, which is also something Reznor/Ross use, like on the score for The Social Network.
