Should we make a foolhardy attempt at an EVH tribute cover fight?! Maybe if we each tackle 1-2 measures and spend a month listening at 1/10th speed we could do a collective cover of Eruption?

I would be willing to do that or a more conventional coverfight. Either one.

Wow. Like'm or not, Van Halen was a massive game changer of his time and for a long time. Underneath the pyrotechnics of his playing is some nice phrasing, some very good songs, and some seriously gnarly guitar tones. RIP.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

I enjoyed this person's look at some of EVH's playing, from the original David Lee Roth era.

Actor Sir Sean Connery, of many films, possibly most notably the old school James Bond films, has passed away at 90:

https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/mov ... t-1084336/

This is something I did not know, which is pretty wild:
Connery was cast in the role of Bond thanks to the actor’s “animal magnetism,” Bond producers told Rolling Stone in 1983. The choice was a surprise as, years earlier, the actor had been forced out of Hollywood following a threatening phone call from mob boss Mickey Cohn, who blamed the actor in part for the death of gangster Johnny Stompanato, who was stabbed to death by the daughter of Lana Turner; that actress had handpicked Connery to be her love interest in 1958’s Another Place, Another Time. Leaving Hollywood in the midst of a Twentieth Century Fox deal, Connery reestablished himself in British cinema before landing the Dr. No gig.
Anyway, he was my favorite Bond. A year or two ago we went and saw "Thunderball" in an old art deco theater in Oakland, and it was awesome. That movie is bananas, there are so many outlandish things in it, particularly the finale was is a massive underwater battle between two small armies of frog men.

I realise this thread is for people, but I just read that one of Melbourne Zoos seals, Tarwin, died this morning and now I'm sad.

https://www.facebook.com/zoosvictoria/p ... 4702338068

I've spent a lot of time in my life sitting in that enclosure watching the seals. Some people talk about the feeling you get in the Rothko Chapel, and watching the seals swimming in Melbourne was my Rothko Chapel.

You might not know it, but Tarwin made a secret guest appearance in one of my songfight album art entries, for Eyes in the Dark, and also in an earlier entry that wasn't used for Floating Away.

Aw goddammit.

Jim Steinman, songwriter/producer extraordinaire passed away Monday April 19 at age 73. He is probably best known for his collaborations with Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler, but there are also a half dozen or so musical acts that I do not particularly enjoy except for the one song of theirs that Jim Steinman produced for them: bands like Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion, The Sisters of Mercy, etc. His music is awe-inspiring and overwhelming, and it's a bummer that he's gone.

I doubt anyone else (other than Robyn) know who he was, but LeRoy White died on Monday. A relatively obscure musician who nonetheless meant a lot to me and pretty much everyone who knew him. https://www.newportri.com/story/news/lo ... 879069001/ RIP LeRoy, one of the deepest people I've ever met.
