The Song Fight Bulletin Board

There are very few musical endeavors I can easily devote my undivided attention to. I'm an MTV child, raised in the ADD age, and even though I consider myself an album person, and I prefer the album format to a collection of singles, I can't just sit and listen. I usually need to be driving, or playing Snood, or something.

Tom Waits' new album demanded my full attention, and got it without complaint. It's a mindblower, kids. It's like Modest Mouse meets Dr. John on acid. A lot of it is very Voodoo-y, and it's a sandy medicine, to be sure, but there's some fascinating material there. Les Claypool offers bass on three tracks, including "Shake It," one of the highlights, and bizarre soundscapes the are as likely to feature mechanical noises and human grunts and screams as they are to use real instruments are the mode.

Also notable: "Don't Go into That Barn" is crazy and creepy. And "Circus" is a spoken-word story that represents what we should all strive for... if we're fiction writers, that is.

What a crazy album. Any other opinions?

Good record.


Also: Blah blah blah meets blah blah blah on acid is cliche, and not a jam.

Just got it last night and really love it. I'd heard a few people say it was a bit of an experimental departure for Waits, what with the scratchin' and all, but I really don't hear that. I hear a very solid Tom Waits album that incorperates new musical elements to expand the Waits sound. SO far there is not a song that I don't like. I'll have to give it several more listenings, but for right now this is right up there with Air's "Talkie Walkie" and Modest Mouses' "Good News..." as a pfm album of the year contender.

Well, it is a departure. There is no piano. But yeah, as far as I was concerned, nothing this year came close to Modest Mouse till this album came out.

you should hear the new badly drawn boy. that one wins my vote for best album of the year.

You know, I heard some of the new Badly Drawn Boy album and wasn't that impressed? But I'm hearing a lot of very good things about it, so I think I should give it another chance. Any recommendations for songs I should download from it?

"four leaf clover", "this is that new song", "another devil dies", "holy grail", "summertime in wintertime"

those are the ones that stand out the most to me. well, besides the obvious choice of the single, "year of the rat" which i think you can get on his website i believe.
